Him trying to use the excuse he was taking these photos to show him when hes older. I personally have been seen a naked photo of me as a child and who wants to keep them to show at his 18th birthday? We know why you were taking naked photos of him, and whatever excuse that pos wants to use will never work. Like the detective said, he was in their care for 4 months and died. There was nothing wrong with that poor boy until he moved in with them.

I just dont get how he thinks its ok to prop his phone up in bathroom and video preston in the bath unsupervised with water and its probably iced cold to get a kick out of it, and leaving him to whimper and slipping as he wanted to see how he reacts being left alone... why the bath?!?!? Why not playpen, jumperoo, cot why a bath the cruelty in that alone is enough to know intentions to harm him was there!

One of the doctors also noticed abnormalities to Preston’s bottom. He said at the time he thought it might be a result of the drugs they’d used on him (in their resuscitation attempts) as he’d seen it before in paediatric resus cases. I’m guessing these abnormalities will come up again linked to the assault by penetration charges. Absolute horror show.

I would say you're likely correct here. The charging is very specific and CPS will usually only charge for what convictions can be made. So if it was ambiguous, they'd go for the lesser but the fact they have still proceeded with an SA charge is also important to consider. That means they must have some reasonable evidence to suggest this unfortunately.

Remember the main charge here is still murder. But I think the SA charge is an important part of why they believe it to be murder, not just manslaughter or something like child endangerment, etc.

JV is likely going to struggle to dispute a manslaughter charge at the very least because they have video proof that he saw poor Preston struggling to breathe and didn't do anything except film him for several minutes. That lack of action/urgency in getting Preston medical care will have been a factor in his death. But the other charges are what paints the bigger picture as to why JV wouldn't immediately seek medical help and why he'd lie about the circumstances

Sorry I'm not fully caught up on the thread so apologies if this is out of place. I've just been reading through some of the back articles on the Blackpool Gazette after the link was posted to Varleys interview.

I'm now even more confused on Varleys Teaching timeliness.
Apologies I'm shit with links but I'm pretty sure this is correct from various reporting.

He did his teacher training between 2019-2021 (incidentally during mostly covid and lockdown times, remember those days?......)

They began the adoption process in late 2021, and passed stage 1 of the process early 2022. Then they took a break before the 2nd part, I'm pretty sure it was said because he wanted to get his year 11s through their exams as he had had them from the start?
I'm sure one of his teacher colleagues said that. But how if that was his first year as a qualified teacher? Had he been head of year during training?
Also the thing about the prom was when they had Preston with them wasn't it? The meet up at the hotel with colleagues. So that would relate to year 11s/exams, but this is a year later in 2023.

Its not especially relevant i suppose but I can't figure it out.

If I was on the jury, and the accused was "disgruntled and yawning" in a case as serious and as heartbreaking as this one - a child he claimed to love is dead - then I wouldn't be impressed.

I think that may have been the case before 2003. It would be interesting to know if in reality sentencing reflects that they are of equal seriousness under the law.

I’ve been poor at putting distressing details behind spoilers, and this is a really upsetting case so I’ll be better going forward.

JV is charged with two counts of assault by penetration. This means the prosecution believe he used an object or body part other than his penis to penetrate Preston’s anus specifically. Each count alleges a distinct incident and each count requires a verdict from the jury. They believe one incident was on the day of his murder and the other I’m not sure about. They must have good reason to believe it happened more than once.

I think reading some of his answers and then the body language reactions in these police interviews I would say it’s quite likely he might take the stand you know…

Omg the state of him.

I'm confused why he was arrested in 2023 and again last year? Was he released into the community for two years? Bet they thought they had gotten away with it!

Also the long blonde hair is definitely because his picture was released after arrest and he's afraid of getting recognised

I think they were!
I think they were remanded in custody in June 2025, so after these interviews.
I just watched that interview footage and, omg, the arrogance, contempt and disdain he shows!
He's looking at the photos and footage of poor little Preston with the attitude of why are you showing me all these photos of some random baby with bruises, like as if the baby has no connection to him at all, and not a baby he was trying to adopt and that was in his "care" for months!
He looks annoyed and bored and he even yawns at one point
Victim blames by saying how clumsy Preston was
I also noticed that he calls him Preston now and not Elijah - is that a form of saying, well he's nowt to do with me anymore?
God, how did this nasty piece of work manage to fool so many people?!

I’ve noticed quite often when JV answers ‘no’ he nods when he says it. I’m sure it’s not foolproof but I think a lot of body language people say this can be a sign of lying. He does it on that latest video with the blonde hair ‘did you cause that bruise’ he replies ‘no’ but nods. He does it a couple of times I’ve noticed it on some of the other videos too.

I assume they’ll have been on bail, similar to Letby.
These types of investigations are extremely complex and the medical evidence can take time to obtain and gather.
The more they unearthed, will have meant further charges, which means they have to bring them back in for them to be able to provide an account - that is their right. I assume once CPS authorised charges they were remanded but I haven’t looked into that

Something about him sets my teeth on edge. I can’t stomach seeing or listening to him, he’s so awful. The smarmy arrogance and bad attitude radiating off him here!! All this going on and he’s made time for a bleach and tone in between. That is me being petty and picking holes in the fat grub I’m sure, but even that has made me think he’s a total self-absorbed wrongen - who would bother when they’ve got, ya know, a rape and murder charge against a baby going on.
