Hiya! Congratulations ☺. Midway through my pregnancy my Scottish hospital that I gave birth in was all over the news for how ‘awful’ maternity care was and how Health Improvement Scotland had been in twice and it was crap twice etc. Not what I wanted to hear at all. I read the report and yes, there were places where there was room for improvement but it wasn’t as the local rags would have you believe. I also spoke to someone I trust who works in SG in Health and has worked in NHS Scotland and she explained that these reports don’t come out instantly so they are a snapshot of a point in time. In the end, when it really mattered, I got the care I needed. I had an unexpected complication at 36 weeks and everything moved really quickly and smoothly for me and everyone was reassuring. There was then a small birth complication and, again, everything sprang into place exactly as you’d want it to to make it all ok. It wasn’t perfect and it was a bit chaotic and messy and people in the NHS are under a tonne of pressure, but they are really good at what they do and the stuff that mattered went ok, better than ok. I think the remote areas have their own protocols in place, if you are an islander you’re encouraged to come to the mainland ahead of your due date, for example.
Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. I’m glad you they all sprang into action that is genuinely reassuring 💕

Yea we’re up in the highlands so I hear most people head down to Inverness in the weeks leading up to it, it’s just daunting haha.

Related-ish I have been having some pain and bleeding and I shouldn’t have googled as I’ve sent myself spiralling! I’m down in central belt this week so I haven’t managed to get an appointment yet, however I doubt there would be anything they could do regardless so just going to wait til I’m back home.

There’s so much to think about!! I contemplated getting a book and looked at them all in Waterstones, got overwhelmed and gave up 😂

Hope everyone else is doing well! Sorry for the essay as I don’t really have anyone to talk to yet except my husband and we’re both learning together!

The early pregnancy unit can help from 6 weeks onwards so if you’re still in the central belt and worried then wherever the local EPAU is will likely see you. I found that suddenly the NHS is a lot less ‘no, you can’t see someone, go away!’ When you are pregnant than normal. They are quite limited in what they can do in early pregnancy but they are there!

I initially lived off beige, salted tortilla chips and salted pretzels were god tier food to me. I did eventually massively get into fruit but only after I was sure I wasn’t going to have gestational diabetes 😆😆. I also ate plenty of rit as well, haha!

Tesco’s value range lightly salted were everything and more to me through my pregnancy. Perfection! I usually have an insanely sweet tooth, but nibbling salty snacks helped with my nausea which was mercifully really low grade but quite constant at first.

Thank you! I did end up calling NHS24 in the car and headed over to A&E on their advice. Didn’t particularly want to tell family this early but as we were staying with them they were starting to wonder where we were.

May have had a meltdown in the car.

Had some bloods taken, blood pressure and pregnancy test. The nurse was so kind and said it was a good solid test and the fact it’s very little bleeding is a good sign but the early unit will get back to me today. We did have to explain we were based in the highlands that puzzled them a bit but she just added it to my notes so hopefully all sorted.

I have made it to 22 weeks after my pprom 2 weeks ago. I had put myself on basically bedrest and hardly moving apart to pee and make food. Started to feel baby really kick which is great but wow the heartburn 😭😭😭
Hi Curly, hope you’re doing ok and LittleCurly is behaving. I had PPROM with my three year old and a premature birth/NICU stay so always happy to be a sounding board if needed.

I can recommend Little Heartbeats (https://www.little-heartbeats.org.uk/) who also have an active FB group for PPROM and Bliss for prematurity (not saying this will happen but a good resource…) stay strong mama. These little babies are stronger than we give them credit for.

Tentative return poster - had a strong positive at 4+1 so crossing all fingers and toes and remaining positive… ☺

Can I ask how many weeks along did you PPROM and when did you deliver? We had nearly passed another week and have only had the one teeny loss of fluid since Tuesday so I’m hoping that the baby is blocking me losing any more 🤞🏽🤞🏽
I feel ok apart from in grieving the pregnancy I should have had which I feel guilty for feeling. This has been over 5 years of trying and now I’m practically trapped in my house instead of being out enjoying this pregnancy BUT I’ll do whatever I need to sta pregnant.

How’s everyone doing? I haven’t touched base in a while - I’m 18 almost 19 weeks, randomly puked everywhere on Tuesday morning (can hunger/dehydration cause really sudden/severe nausea!?) and peeing like a racehorse every 5 mins ✌😂

I was later in my pregnancy at 32+0 and delivered 32+6 but have a strong suspicion I had been leaking for a period of time before that (long story of not being listened to). The problem I encountered was that I was 3cm dialated at the time of my waters largely going and lost most of it so couldn’t replenish in that time.

That’s amazing mama! 23 weeks nearly! Well done you! Every extra hour we can give these little warriors helps. There’s a lot of good information on that LH website, stuff which my medical team contradicted but is proven, such as that the hole/tear can repair itself/close and that the waters do replenish. Apparently coconut water can help, but obviously I can’t vouch for that!

PPROM/prematurity is really rit, there’s no two ways about it. It’s ok to grieve. It’s taken me three years to come to terms with it all. I remember going into the shops to buy prem baby clothes whilst baby was still in hospital and the DEPTH of jealousy that hit me whenever I saw a gorgeous, large bump was scary. It’ll take time. Talk to people and ask for extra support if needed. It’s not you and it’s not your fault. There’s nothing you did wrong and that your body failed you (another massive hangover I had from the time).

I think part of the problem is that no one ever mentions this side of pregnancy and it’s dangerous. My NCT class/midwives were so narrow in its scope that it’s never even mentioned. I had an unusual awareness because I was born early as well but I think much more awareness is needed.

Much strength to you and stay strong.

The only puke I had my entire pregnancy was really late on, like 35/36 weeks, I spent a day in the garden with my husband getting some mad tit done that I decided HAD to happen before the baby was born (to be fair I’m 6 months PP and yeah, there is no time for random side quest tasks so I was right!), I thought I was doing well at taking it easy, hydrating and staying out of the sun despite being slathered in SPF 50 but come dinner time I was feeling really odd and halfway through my dinner I had to waddle off to the toilet and throw up rather profusely. I can only assume it was heat/dehydration/over exertion. Whoops.

Ooo that sounds unpleasant! You never really think doing something or going as long without food not pregnant would have an effect on you, but these foetuses seem to be very demanding of optimal conditions and rest at all times! 😂 I hope it was one a off for me under second trimester circumstances because I have a super early start/late finish for my sister’s wedding on Wednesday, so i’ll need to be fully stocked up on all the snacks and electrolytes to not have a repeat incident

I was very sick every day until 14 weeks and if I didn’t eat for a while the strong hunger would make me sick :(

This has happened to me randomly a few times so far. The first few times I was like wtf is going on I thought we were past this? Then I figured out this baby doesn’t like weetabix because every time I eat it, it doesn’t settle and I’m sick 🤣

I’m starting to think mine doesn’t like marmite on toast 😂 it was so bizarre! I think it’s because I fell asleep at 8pm and didn’t get out of bed till 8am so I went without food and water for 12 hours and baby performed an exorcism on me in protest 😂 i’m now back on my granola bar before getting out of bed era

Ughhh pregnancy insomnia has started at just under 26 weeks. I was sleeping so well until now and it suddenly came on over the weekend. I had to move into our spare room last night as I was just tossing and turning so much. Any tips?

That’s a very valid dislike 👀🤣 Yes how dare you rest😂 I used to do similar where I’d have a small biscuit before moving anywhere just in case. My husband called them my emotional support biscuits and he wasn’t wrong 🤣
