I had a private scan on Monday, measuring 10 weeks 3 days, saw heartbeat etc. The woman doing the scan said that baby looked fine but I’m now totally over analysing the scan photo as the baby’s forehead looks massive!! Would a private scan necessarily tell you if anything looked concerning? Did anyone else have a scan around this time and think the baby’s head looked huge? 😂 got my 12 week scan in a couple of weeks so trying to relax until then but it’s hard!

I had a private scan at 9 weeks with my first and looking at his head on that it looked slightly bigger than the rest of him 😂
I think they just balance out and start to look a bit more baby like by 12 weeks so I wouldn’t worry too much !

Have you got any apps that show what your baby looks like week by week? Because pre 12wks they do look like little aliens. Please try not to worry as at your official 12wk scan lots will be checked xx

The private scan clinic I use (national chain, Ultrasound Direct I think they’re called) say that they will make onward referrals back into the NHS if they see anything that concerns them. The sonographer we’ve had started her career in the NHS before I was even born and this was her drop down to something less stressful pre-retirement (I think she is both a midwife and a sonographer), so I felt in incredibly safe hands with her. I really think that, regardless of where you go, if something looked troubling they’d advise you to go to EPU or maternity triage or give your midwife a call as appropriate.

I was also totally surprised when I went to my first scan where JuniorDragName was more than just a smudge and a heartbeat and they weren’t just sedately floating about. I have one scan picture which is ‘face on’ where it looks like an actual devil child/the son of that weird rabbit thing in Donnie Darko. So, whilst they do look a bit alien at first anyway till all their growing catches up with each other, their position relative to the scanner when the image is taken probably plays a part. Mine is often upside down 🤣 no doubt over the heritage here… 🤣

To be fair I’m getting awful sleep at the moment, I can’t sleep longer than 2 hours, I’m constantly changing sides…my husband called me a rotisserie chicken because I keep rotating so much 😭

but I will miss being able to say “the baby wants it” at every item of food, clothing, holiday…🤪
I keep pinging the fitted sheet off the bed with all the turning over in bed 🫶🏼

Does it still not quite compute for anyone that the kicks and rolls they feel is their child? I know I'm pregnant, I'm showing now (although still small), my colostrum has come in, I'm in the final stretch and yet still my brain doesn't seem to be connecting that is my child in there.

Yes! I’ve had this with all of mine, my brain just doesn’t seem to put together pregnant = baby. Even looking back at pregnancy photos and newborn pics etc I can’t compute that it was them in there
I’m 39 weeks and it’s not clicked yet and won’t until I’m holding a baby and I’ll be like..oh..it’s a baby 😅

I have a mentor at work and I told her I was pregnant and she was extremely helpful in talking to me about succession planning timescales etc and it just gave me this massive realisation that I am actually pregnant and I had this huge internal freak out 🤣

MrDragName has moved past the screening test anxiety (our results were all clear/low risk probability) and now wants to spend this weekend making a list of things we need for JuniorDragName. MrDragName loves a list and I hate it.So far we (I) have bought: a giant giraffe, a giant llama, one normal sized teddy, a teddy rattle, one crocheted jacket, one little set of baby gro/top/bottoms/hat from Primark and a vintage wooden stackable toy which is more for decoration in the room till Junior is big enough to have it. So, we’re not very organised!

MrDragName is not really a second hand kind of guy whereas I’m all about second hand (except the mattresses for the various types of baby bed and also it seems it’s best not to buy a second hand car seat? So not one of them either). I’m wary this whole endeavour will be like when we adopted our cat and we bought 5 different cat beds and she hated all of them, except the cat beds were no more than a tenner each and these bedside cribs and travel systems and whatever are A LOT more.

Where can I get a no nonsense place to read about what we should get and the pros and con a of different brands etc? I don’t want any influencers shilling me stuff. I’d like to keep unnecessary buying to a minimum (unless it’s giant cuddly toys, obvs…). MotherDragName has hung onto my moses basket and I feel like that would be handy to keep downstairs for a downstairs nap, I’ll just change the mattress. Everything else is up for consideration!

This is really hard because I think everyone has such different experiences about what is / isn’t useful 😂 I read so many mumsnet threads and watched so many YouTube vids about hospital bag essentials and what to not bother buying and my experience ended up being totally different 😂 (sorry not entirely useful!) Your best bet is to maybe ask 2nd / 3rd time mums here but I bet you’ll get a huge spec of replies! For example EVERYONE told me a Moses basket would be a total waste of money and not to bother but I slept on the sofa for the first 3 months of my daughters life because she hated lying down in any way but the Moses basket was a godsend because I could plop her in it during the day and rest. I was also conned into buying an Ollie the owl white noise thing which was absolute dogshit and we went through about 6 in 6 months because they kept breaking so I bought the Lull white noise app which is like £3.99 a year with no ads and you can custom mix sleep sounds 😂

It's funny I think it's the opposite away round for me I've been going on at my partner we need to make a list 😂
For the travel system we went to John Lewis (although our nearest is over an hour away) and it really helped actually being able to look at and test out some of the prams etc and we spoke through things with a member of staff there who was so helpful and not pushy at all. I think you can also book specific appointments with them, she recommended to buy it about 2 months before due date as the warranty starts from the date of purchase.
We are lucky that we've timed it well with having a niece and nephew just turning one so have got some bits second hand from them including a Moses basket which I just got a new mattress for!

book a free nursery appointment at mamas and papas or John Lewis - particularly for the travel system. You can try them all out and the assistants will even test the car seats/prams in your car to ensure it fits etc. and they will ask what you are most likely to be doing - urban or rural walks/on and off public transport etc and advise on what they think would work best.

Second hand is fine for most other things with exception of new mattresses in bassinets and cribs. Some people think a next-to-me style cribs are a waste but personally for me it’s a godsend to settle baby through the night without having to get up (and I think she does settle better with me or her dad in sight and reach of her so I would recommend).
The drawback of course is that they only really last until 6 months so it may be an expense you want to do without. I think there are one or two that transform into full blown cots but I’m not sure.

Things like slings/carriers you may want to look into a sling library first of all as 1) baby may not want to be in one and 2) different carriers work for different shapes.

I’m not sure if you are planning to formula feed or breast, but if formula feeding the best advice I got was to only buy a couple of bottles as babies can be fussy with different tests - for example if you start with MAM bottles and baby is fine with those just add to your collection after they are here. A formula prep machine was extremely helpful to us as no waiting for boiling water to cool etc particularly overnight, but these are IFFY under NHS guidelines, so that may not be a route you want to go down. A Nuby rapid cool is a MUST for bottles as it cools formula from boiling to room temperature in a couple of minutes.
As far as sterilising goes we just use a Milton bucket with tablets instead of splashing out on a steam or UV one but again I think things like that are just a personal preference.

Baby K got gifted SO MANY newborn and 0-3 clothes and my advice is if you think you may get a lot of gifts just get the basics for your baby. They spend a lot of time in a vest and sleep suit also as cute as the fussy little outfits can be 😆 she’s also bursting out of 0-3 clothes at just under 12 weeks without wearing a lot of what people got her so it is difficult but I’ve really reigned in my clothes shopping for the next few sizes up as she really doesn’t need it.
vinted is great for packs of baby stuff 2nd hand and cheap and the supermarket clothes are as good as any other.

As for reading - I’ve found Reddit to be a wonderful source of information bizarrely for example googling “is snuzpod worth it Reddit” and there will usually be a thread of opinions and at least you can be sure it’s real people being 100% honest. The new baby thread here is also a great help for recommendations too.

there will always be something you don’t have and really it’s trial and error - have the basics there and you can add to it once you see what you need and baby would like. The beauty of Amazon next day delivery has got me out of many binds in the last 12 weeks 😆

I’m here awaiting baby no. 2 so happy to give you my opinions but I think things work for different babies/households
Sleep wise what worked for us was a Moses basket and a Snuz pod - initially we’d have the Moses downstairs on the stand during the day and at night put the Moses in the Snuz pod as for the first few weeks the Snuz pod was a little too big so he wouldn’t settle as well in it. Once he grew he slept in the Snuz pod fine.
If I had my time again I’d get my travel system second hand. After buying mine I saw soooo many decent ones of Facebook market place etc.. some barely used too🙃 however it might be worth having a look in Smyths/mamas and papas for what sort of thing you'd like then go home and see what you can find online.
Unsure what your nursery plans are but I personally wouldn’t buy standard ‘nursery furniture’ it’s expensive for no reason and doesn’t really grow with them in my opinion. Get a regular wardrobe, the nursery ones are tiny. Don’t bother with a changing table, get a chest of drawers and a non slip changing mat- then you can just get rid of the changing mat when it’s no longer needed.
Don’t sweat the small stuff.. supermarkets are great for having stuff now so if you need more clothes, formula, dummies, bottles blah blah you can pick them up fairly local or next day delivery from Amazon! 🥰

Jesus what did you do to the owl!? We’ve had ours for 4 years and use it every single night and he’s still going strong 😂😂

This is baby 4 for me!
I’d say the main must have essentials are - nappies, clothes, somewhere to sleep (personally I keep baby in bed with me but it’s not for everyone), and something to eat so either boobs or formula and the stuff that comes with that (breast pumps are non essential, I fed for 6 years across 3 kids and never used one, breastpads would come under must have!), blankets, muslins and of course an infant carrier car seat. Definitely new.

Next would be, very useful - a sling (visit a sling library if you have one, but a stretchy wrap is best for the newborn stage. I highly recommend a close caboo, they can be picked up on Vinted for a tenner), a pram, bouncer, changing mat, baby play mat.

3rd category for me is nice to have but definitely don’t need - all the “gadgets” like white noise machines, dream sheep’s, room thermometers, snot suckers, nappy bins etc dummies, baby change units and other “stuff”

And as someone else said, we have next day delivery/amazon/supermarkets etc so you’ll never be absolutely stuffed if there’s something you forget or think actually I do want that. Hope that helps!
