I'm approaching 40, off the pill with my ex 4 years, spent a long time coming to terms that it wasn't happening & when I split with him, that was it, there wasn't time left. Obviously it worked out but I still can't get my head around it, the shock. I fell after 8 weeks expecting it to take years of IVF, we'd not been together properly a year. Even seeing the positive result, knowing it was what we wanted, I spent days worrying we should do it so soon in our relationship.
I was also terrified about what my age meant for the health of the baby (my partner is younger & I felt responsible, if he were with someone his own age he wouldn't have the worry). We paid for the DNA test at 10 weeks to be sure, £400 later but worth every penny for my peace of mind. I'd recommend it.
There are so many scary factors, one is eliminated, another comes along. I waited so long avoiding pregnancy for the 'right time' and now it's happened in many ways at the wrong time (Covid, reduced midwifery service, we were house hunting, ideally would have had more time together before baby) I'm trying to go with the fact that this is the strongest, most supportive, loving relationship I've ever had and we're financially stable so we can weather storms but still... Anxiety is getting the better of me some days. I haven't suffered really seriously for years now and here it is. I get the most horrible emotional response when I feel her kick in a certain way like shame, remorse, regret, doom, feeling like I've done something terrible everyone is about to find out about or dwelling on bad things I actually have done and feeling horrible. It's the weirdest thing and my brain is

But..... Pregnancy hormones. And being sick or in pain daily also messes with your mind and morale. Trying to control your thoughts and emotions is hopeless. I just hope with all my heart that it gets better once she is here. And I won't even get started on worrying about once she's here and bonding!
I know how lucky I am to have the opportunity to experience pregnancy, but I want to acknowledge that it can be hard; no one talks about that. It's like I'm already a bad mum because I'm not glowing and painting my belly for Instagram. All of this is just my experience so far and may not be interesting to anyone but I'm writing it to get it out and because it should be ok to admit it's not all roses. We shouldn't pressure ourselves so much.
