The world has changed, but it's still not perfect.

Someone gay in the entertainment industry is such a non story.

The sun and others regularly gay bashed back in the 90s, we're a world apart from that these days.
Yes, I completely agree - it’s better but certainly not perfect.

I’m watching the Barrymore documentary and not to derail this thread but one of the contributors is talking about how a married, famous entertainer with a strong family image coming out in the 90s would have been associated with ‘nightclubs, rent boys and moral ambiguity’ and he’s spot on. It wasn’t celebrated and thought of as brave, there was a definite feeling of ‘we’ve rumbled one of them’. It was very very different to now. Thank duck attitudes have changed and we hopefully continue to become more broadminded and accepting.

Edited to add: I’m not sticking up for PS. I’ve always thought he was a vindictive little twit and now I think he’s gonna be utterly unbearable but people saying he should have come out years ago.... Regardless of whether someone is famous or not, it can be an incredibly frightening, stressful, lonely process to go through even in today’s society - not everyone has the strength to do it.

Really??
I've always got the biggest vibe from him. And from David Mitchell too 🙈
Aw, David Mitchell is so in love with his wife Victoria Coren. He reads an extract from his book on YouTube about how he met her and fell in love with her within 20 mins but later she dumps him for someone else then he pined for her for a few years then she got back in touch and they got back together, married and had a child. It had me in tears listening to it. Very romantic!

My best friend used to date him- he is NOT gay.
My friend worked in security on X Factor and said he was really rude and that he’s definitely gay!

I’ve got one of those friend of a friend who works in tv stories 😂
At least ten years ago I worked with someone whose friend worked at itv and they claimed johnathon Ross was a raging alcoholic and Paul o’grady demanded 18k every time his dog appeared on his show. No idea If any of that was true or if there was a friend at itv

The entertainment industry probably still has its issues, actors being cast only as Gay if they’re openly gay etc. And all sorts of other bull.

However in real life, homophobia is alive and well. My brother is 18, was viciously bullied from the age of 14-16 because the one person he trusted to reveal he was gay to, betrayed his trust. He was beaten up, pushed down the stairs and verbally abused for 2 years. We only found out when he was finishing school because he had been too afraid to come out after what had happened to him. Our younger brother has also had bullies have a pop at him because his brother is gay.

Who knows what homophobia he internalized growing up. The world is changing (in some places) and young people are more able to come out. However there are still people who get disowned for being gay, who are bullied and ridiculed for it.

funny enough the majority of gay men or women didn't marry the opposite sex and keep up the farce for decades.
Honestly several of my best friends are gay, you wouldn’t believe how many men are married to women and are sleeping with men behind their backs. One of my best friends was in a relationship with a politician (not in Britain) who has a wife and 3 kids and a harem of men that he takes to dinners and events at his place of work. I hated him because he had voted against gay marriage all the while having his cake and eating it.

I’m not condoning this behavior but I think it’s naive to think it isn’t common. And it will continue to be while homophobia is present and anything but straight relationships are seen as other.

Interesting as my friend has no need to lie to us about their sex life and we were witness to their relationship. He also married a woman and had a child with her.

It says on a DM article hes doing a interview with a Sunday paper. This is what makes me think he was forced. I mean why do you need to do a interview? you just put out a lengthy statement and appeared on This Morning that's enough IMO. Its a big issue because hes played the loving hubby for 27 yrs when its all been a sham. If he wasn't married and just came out as gay it wouldn't have been such a big deal.

I wasn't planning to throw my hat in this ring but...

This was a marriage of convenience for the both of them, as she was his manager and this helped keep his career on track. It's perfectly possible for him to be gay and still have wanted children, so they both agreed to have them together. It seems (given the number of years they were together) that they were good companions in every other way, so it's a win-win for them both to have this marriage run and have dalliances on the side that they both agreed to (it explains him saying there were no secrets between him and his wife).

As for him acting during that interview, I'm not sure. It's one thing to have industry insiders and friends knowing you're gay, but it's entirely different to come out to a TV audience of millions. There's a risk This Morning would lose viewers or get backlash if this was taken as something that didn't align with 'family values'. As others have said, we are in 2020 but many people still don't understand. I can imagine he was legitimately nervous.

Also, I do think he's come out now because he has been pressured to. Not due to blackmail or his wife wanting to publicly move on with another man, or a scandalous story from the Sunday papers about to be run...but by ITV themselves. All the negative news around him of late has created a lot of chatter around ITV's choice of hosts! You need only look at the early posts in this thread to see how many people were saying the lineup needs a shake-up and all these arrogant pricks should be fired. ITV bosses would have told him they can't take any more negative press with all the rumors around his Diva antics, and this would be a great PR exercise to silence those speaking out against PS. Then there's the added bonus of showing all his ITV 'family' rallying around and therefore reinforcing the image of this being one big happy family, further quashing all the rumors of problems between them.
It is a genius move to deflect from the negative press but I give credit to the ITV higher-ups who came up with this idea, not PS himself.

Exactly! It’s no one else’s business who me, you or Mr/Ms Jones at number 35 sleeps with. If people remembered this there wouldn’t be all this effing hoo-haa!

Couldn’t give a tit about Jonathan Ross but I love PoG and really hope he does demand at least £18k every time one of his gorgeous dogs makes an appearance 😁

Not really comfortable with the immense admiration, "so brave" etc. He would have been brave 30 years ago, but instead he choose to use a woman, who likely wasn't consenting just to be a "beard", whereas she went into things thinking it was a genuine romantic relationship. He has claimed the public narrative to distance it away from the bullying allegations, and made public with such fanfare something that today is so mundane. His poor wife is basically limited to showing how "supportive" she is. else she be accused on intolerance, despite her being lied to and used for public image because Schoff, couldn't be brave to come out, or at least not drag a woman into his insecurities like this.

Think this is something prominent LGB spokespeople need to have a word with themselves about, it's not right to marry someone of the opposite sex, to use them for public image, to have children etc when they believe the relationship is a genuine het one. Even if we could understand reasoning why he would have been scared to be himself openly at the time, doesn't make it right. He should have just quietly divorced his wife, and gave her some dignity, instead of splashing this on the media whilst still being married.
I think this too there are many many brave gay people who have spent their life fighting for equality and the stigma to be removed from the media, these are the brave ones.
I actually think he’s a coward and a deceitful coward at that... I’m pretty sure the wife knew from the very beginning and was happy to play along for her own reasons but he’s still lived in a marriage of mutual convenience for a considerable length of time...
I’m not doubting they’ve share a love of friendship and companionship and have probably had a very happy “marriage of convenience” but he‘s hidden from the truth that’s not brave at all it’s selfish.
