The name Peter Kay will always be household of British comedy, you can never take that away from him.
Problem is like has been mentioned, his act is very stale. Even back then when it originally aired, he released the same standup show as a DVD 3 times. Well, what felt like the same show, as it was the same routine just juggled around slightly.

I get he has a 'winning formula', and people love to hear the odd classic joke of his, but he needs to observe what's current and update his act.
He knows his tours will sell out, and he will make mega money from them so I guess after this latest tour he can go back to living a quiet life for another few years.
I personally would love another series of Phoenix Nights, or a series of specials.

Can’t remember what gossip forum I was on years ago and it was said it was Peter who had leukaemia and was in Christie’s.

I’m disappointed. I came here hoping a tattler would know someone who would know someone who could get me tickets on the sly beforehand but I forgot you all hate him. We saw him in Manchester doing a big charity thing and he was bloody brilliant.

We had tickets too but we said we wouldn’t rebook if he ever said he was going to redo it. I know that probably sounds petty and I’m sure he had good reason for it but he always comes across as someone that doesn’t care about his fans. They like his tv shows etc but he just stops them.

Did anyone see the video yesterday where he'd sent a recorded message to Paddy McGuinness to encourage him on his sponsored cycle for "Children in Need"? Paddy seemed glad to listen to the message but afterwards said "He'll invoice you for that message now, knowing him!". Whilst people would have taken it as purely a joke, who haven't heard how penny pinching Kay allegedly can be, I could well believe it lol.

I am baffled why people think they are.funny when they heckle. They literally never are. If you were funny mate, you'd be the one on stage. It is always cringe and really annoying. But also a discourtesy to your fellow audience members but even more to the comedian as surely it can break their flow and then it's hard to get back into it.

Having said that it sounds like PK is past his prime jokes wise and his true self is becoming more evident. Getting the lights up and getting people to point? Telling security to carry him out by his pubes? Too far and not funny. Also we're that many security guards needed?

However the guy ends up with supposedly a couple of bruises and is banging on about not being able to walk properly at work the next day? Good grief! Are you actually that flimsy?

Neither him or his wife were ever ill. He was ready to divorce his wife and cancelled the tour to ensure the enormous upcoming earnings wouldn’t have to be divided in the process. Now the divorce has been finalised, he’s touring.

Everyone has their 'peak' and I think Peter Kay had his some time ago. I loved his humour but got a bit fed up with him taking over everything he was appearing on, even when he wasn't the 'star turn'. However, I'm sad he's been so ill (I don't think there's been much doubt that it's him and not a family member). He looks as though he's really had it taken out of him. Hope it's something he can recover from.

I've never really understood the mass success Peter Kay has enjoyed.

Maybe I should finally check out Phoenix Nights and see if it lives up to the hype.

I think he tapped into a specific vein of comedy at the right time. His initial couple of stand-up DVDs (the Blackpool Tower one and Mum Wants A Bungalow) were decently funny but also had a pretty broad appeal since his observational stuff focused on really general inoffensive topics, e.g. biscuits, weddings, Teletext, etc.

I'm pretty sure those were some of the first standup sets I was allowed to watch as a kid, other than some swearing (which we weren't allowed to repeat), his material was still accessible to a younger audience. His Channel 4 stuff was definitely for an adult audience but the stand-up made him a household name, which got then cemented with the Amarillo video which was everywhere at the time.

The problem was that Peter Kay never really evolved his stand up after that. I could be mistaken but I think he literally released two DVDs from the same tour at one point so it was almost entirely the same material just filmed at different venues. Over the years, he's leant way harder on the nostalgia factor, which he always did a bit but suddenly it wasn't 'remember a few years ago' but now it's 'remember this specific thing from 30+ years ago'. It's not relevant or new anymore.

Peter Kay is mainly still seen as a 'big name' because he got so popular at a time when everyone was consuming the same media on the same TV channels and buying the same DVDs, etc, which isn't really a thing now. If he'd come on the scene any later, I don't think he'd have made the same impact he did.

I wonder if he's not said what's been wrong because he doesn't want all the charities associated with the condition he's had/got bombarding him with messages to help 'raise awareness' and become their poster boy (because I'm as sure as hell that's what would happen). Not to mention the tons of letters that would be coming his way from other sufferers and their families that he couldn't possibly respond to, especially if feeling really ill. That's an awful lot of pressure. Maybe it's right that he used the time he's had out to focus on whatever he's been dealing with and his family. Much as I'd like to know what's happened, I don't blame him one bit for keeping it low key.

Ha ha what are you? Like 12 years old? You do sound very petty about it. Can understand you might be upset because he cancelled something you were looking forward to but he’s obviously had good reason to. It more than likely cost him a fortune to cancel a tour. The promotional material, advertising all sorts. It obviously wasn’t a decision he made lightly and if it was him that was / is poorly it makes you sound like a right callous bitch.
Kudos to PK for actually thinking of his family rather than the money or his fans.....and that your evening out was ruined!!

When he put on the finale of Car Share as a live show I remember the proceeds going to a mitochondrial disease charity. My thoughts are that perhaps one of his children is ill.

I have a lot of respect for him.

He’s a brilliant comedian and that tour would have been ridiculously lucrative, he could have gone through the motions to get through it and take the money as his fan base is so loyal they wouldn’t care about a substandard performance. Or he could have sold his story for a huge sum. But he decided that time and privacy for his family was more important.
