At first I thought wow, Rob’s being genuinely supportive of Josh. Then realised he’s only doing that because he feels vindicated for his own choices and he’s been telling Josh to move out for ages. It shocked me a bit that Josh apparently made the decision within about a week of first thinking about it, the grass will be greener, for sure, but will he be able to cope with things like the constant driving that living ‘out’ requires? They’re always doing stuff in London to pass the time, they’ll be shocked at how scaled back everything will become.
I’m a Londoner and can very much see the appeal of living where Rob lives and where Josh has moved to. Doesn’t mean they need to go on about how dreadful London is, they’re like vegans or people who’ve given up drinking who don’t stop going on about how blinkered everyone else is. I’m raising kids in central London. Absolutely crime and violence are a concern, there’s no denying that. Is it balanced by the fact that we have a huge variety of cultural experience all around us that we access pretty much constantly? For me, yes. We do all the things London is famous for and live in a ‘cool’ area. I really love the countryside but find the lack of activities wearing after a week of walking, playing board games and going to farms and fairs. If they want to keep up their kids level of clubs and activities they’ll probably need a nanny as they won’t have the man-hours to keep driving them about.
