You'd think this great man of literature would do better than such a series of cliches
... I haven't responded yet because I'm so respectful... I'm so sad this happened... What happened didn't happen like these misguided women think.. If it did happen I didn't mean it... I was emotionally unavailable (implying the women wanted a relationship)... I'm learning and growing... Some things happened and some didn't (I won't tell you what I am denying, as there is evidence but I'll muddy the waters)

My husband, who is (now was) a massive fan, couldn't believe it when I first told him, and wondered if it was a consensual BDSM relationship that ended bitterly or maybe it was Amanda trying to smear his name. He's definitely changed his mind now and sees it for what it is, which is abuse, but his initial reaction was disbelief because this was someone he admired. Unfortunately I think this is why Neil has been able to get away with this behaviour for so long. People don't want to believe their heroes are actually horrible people
I also was a fan (though not as much as hubbie) but I never fell for his 'I'm a feminist' routine. In my experience, with men who say that it's usually a ploy to get women to sleep with them. They don't anything constructive to further women's rights like taking a pay cut so they are all equal pay with you.
They are also the same men who say 'Sex work is work' and porn is empowering to women

Not as far as I'm aware, he just gives (and has always given) me the same fake-unassuming good-guy vibes as Gaiman. I don't imagine he's a sexual predator, but I think we'll eventually hear about some behaviour he would rather was kept quiet.Are there rumours about him?

Oh mark my words when I say that people will still stick up for Gaiman.I don't think it will. OJ was a rare case in that he was considered innocent by a ton of people. Neil isn't. Neil is dead to rights. Plus in a perverted way, what he did some think is worse than what OJ did.

Seriously, therapy might be great for victims, but it is Gaslighting 101 for abusers. Every psychological insight can be weaponised if put in the wrong hands.I would add to caution around men who are 'outspoken feminists', the ones who talk about going to therapy. You can see how he weaponises therapeutic language in his statement. 'Breaking the silence' is SUCH a goading, dishonest, weaponises bit of bullshit
In my experience many abusive men seek out therapist to endorse their behaviour (hard for them as many only hear their side), to pretend to be changing ('doing the work') and augment a nice guy imagine. I feel so frustrated when women say they want a man who goes to therapy like it is an insurance policy against being a bastard.

Exactly this; perfectly put. His statement (won't call it an apology) makes me sick as he is so arrogant and lacking in empathy to believe that someone of his magnetism (as he perceived it) could ever have coerced someone into consent. He didn't see any abuse or non-consent because he didn't want to see it. Both Neil and Amanda have used their power, privilege, and money to get what they want. They have been careless and thoughtless with other people. The imbalance of power and status between Neil and his victims alone is enough to question whether anyone was in a position to actually give consent.
I think more than that - he does and he enjoys it. Rapists know they are raping. The rape and the emotional suffering/distress of his victim afterwards are both things he enjoys and thrived on. Look at Andrew Tate. He coaches thousands of men how to groom and abuse women. It is not an accident.Does he not understand grooming?
