Oh great, monkeypox is obviously the latest excuse for the government to terrorise us all. I’m more scared of the government’s actions to “combat” this illness than I am of the illness itself.

I'm willing to eat my words if I'm proven wrong in the future, but I think this is the media completely blowing things out of proportion. Especially by using the same language that was/is used for covid. 🥴 I think we will have forgotten about this by next month.

It was always obvious that Covid was different and was likely to turn into the pandemic that scientists had been warning of for decades. The similarities to cold and flu and the fact that it spread so easily, this does sound more some weird tropical disease rather than another potential pandemic but who knows. I hope I’m right.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Putin let it out as its only in the Western countries so far haha

Seriously though from everything I've seen and read so far there doesn't seem to be too much to worry about at this stage. The media are loving it though, they got a taste of constant crisis since brexit and don't want to let it go.

As someone else said, we all seem perfectly comfortable with awfully high numbers of things like heart disease, cancer, obesity etc. But something like this causes panic stations
Not wanting to turn this into a conspiracy thread but my spidey senses are tingling, first hepatitis in children in mainly western countries, now monkeypox in mainly western countries? also a lot of NATO countries and allies of the USA? suspicious

But anyway, lethargy comes over me every time I read about monkeypox…literally cannot take anymore and my brain knows it 😭😴

Some good threads about Monkeypox from virologists and doctors:
(some graphic images of poxviruses)

The consensus seems to be that it's not really dangerous and is spread through close contact. Fortunately, it is closely related to smallpox, which we already have a vaccine for, and there are lots of antivirals available that could help. The smallpox vaccine is suitable for this and for other poxviruses, but we stopped vaccinating against smallpox in the UK 50 years ago after over 100 years of doing so, once we successfully eradicated it. This means the public's immunity to poxviruses like this one is waning. Chickenpox is apparently not a poxvirus, BTW.

From what I can gather, virologists and doctors aren't so much concerned that monkeypox will become an epi/pandemic - it's more that it transmitting at all is proof of our vulnerability to poxviruses (like smallpox). The fact we haven't been able to trace it shows it is spreading undetected. Poxviruses' adaptability means they can jump from animals to humans, and there are loads of nasty poxviruses that affect animals out there. Virologists see it as another sign we should be doing more to limit zoonosis and transmission - for instance, by improving sanitation around animal agriculture and yes, bush meat - and procure vaccines and antivirals.

TL;DR: Monkeypox itself is likely not that dangerous, but is proof of our growing vulnerability to poxviruses, and a reminder that we should put procedures in place to build our defences against poxviruses. Fortunately, unlike with COVID, we have plenty of suitable defences available to us. We just need to start using them.

You need to have very close contact with someone to get it, so the risk is pretty low.
Yea and even those who do get it it’s a mild illness. If only the media would stop the fear mongering agenda. They get a thrill out of it though don’t they! Soon they’ll be encouraging everyone to get the vaccine! Watch this space 😬

You can catch it from touch, bodily fluids and breath it’s not only sexually transmitted .

They think it may have been spread by people travelling from Pride festivals in Spain and sex saunas

Joe’s concerned

It’s being passed exactly like that ,but it’s airborne aswell so anyone can catch it if they’re near an infected person, it’s also a 12 day incubation period before symptoms show so people can be infectious without knowing it.
it’s not an STI - it’s shown to be spreading about the gay male population for some reason but researchers are hesitant to specify it as an sti

its also not airbourne
“Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact is required. Other human-to-human methods of transmission include direct contact with body fluids or lesion material, and indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated clothing or linens.” (Taken from CDC website)

i swear news outlets are devastated covid is on the wane and have latched onto a monkey pox as a new way to whip up hysteria, which is why I’m avoiding the rag that is the Daily Mail at all costs.

i used to be able to roll my eyes at it, but it’s gone into the territory of plain harmful reporting (especially during the pandemic and the aftermath when it whipped up hysteria, was extremely divisive, spread disinformation, blamed the NHS, the public sector and made excuses for MPs) and does the British public a real disservice.

Exactly

I do wonder if the history with AIDS/HIV (plus I guess the attitudes some people hold?) has made them pause a bit and wait for more data 🤷‍♀️
My honest opinion is it’s probably fear of offending or not being politically correct. Anything related to gender or sex is so controversial in this day and age where cancel culture is a thing anyone who says anything that one single person may be offended at is at risk of being ridiculed even if it is scientifically factual. This is where it gets dangerous though because it they aren’t putting out all the facts then it risks all those who are at more risk from accessing the right info and means they aren’t taking cautions they might otherwise had they been informed.

Thats why I think it’s so important that things like this are talked about, reported on and shared in a way that most people understand. It’s more important that everyone can access medical care and information that applies to them than it is protecting a minority of peoples feelings. Eg the nhs recently removed the words women/woman on the cervical cancer info page and that risks anyone who doesn’t know medical terms such as cervix from realising this could affect them and puts a barrier in the way particularly those who English isn’t their first language. Sorry for slight derailment!!

It won't be forgotten if people can get 3 weeks off work for it. Isolations all over the place.
Imagine all the blokes calling work claiming they need to isolate for monkey pox close contact.

Alright Dave, do you think you picked it up at the gay bathhouse or the gay rave.

Sorry boss did I say monkey pox, I mean I'll be there in 5 minutes.

So why the big hoo ha Why can't people just be I'll anymore
It’s almost like only certain types of illness are allowed and accepted by the government. Cancer, heart disease, mental health related deaths, flu etc all just accepted prior to covid with barely a batted eyelid. Campaigns here and there but nothing like covid or now MonkeyPox it’s rammed down our throats like the world is ending constantly. Some winters my whole office would be taken down with viruses that spread amongst us, to the point some had been in bed for days. No one freaked out about that & wrote stories in the Daily Mail “whole office ill mystery virus that spread within days!!!” …my boss actually expected us to come in and work through it. 🤷‍♀️ 🙄 The more the media does it the more people just aren’t going to care.
