I read on the news that they started planning this rollout in 2019 or something so the timing is just a coincidence. Not sure why it took so long from the planning to the test but I guess maybe there's more to it technically than you'd think. To be honest, until people started freaking out about this I just assumed there must be something similar in place already - I didn't realise the government would have had no way of notifying people if there really was a major emergency.

I had completely forgotten about this, so when I returned home I heard this horrible screeching sound. For a few moments, it scared and confused me. Then the noise happened again, and I realsed it was coming from my android phone.
I'm completely disgusted, what would have happened if I was elderly and confused person? They would be in a terrible state.

Seems to be the issue is anyone who has reservations about stuff like this is automatically lumped in with the types of people who try to destroy 5G towers. Why though? That's what I find weird.

I was in Tesco and it was fairly underwhelming.
The test may have been to find the flaws with older phones/networks
I think it sort of depends on the nature of the alert too. Though presumably you have friends/family in the area that would contact you or you’d just hear it around you (assuming it’s local). If national, there’s probably a whole procedure for every channel switching to the news or some screen or something
In a news article I read it said it was being rolled out because of covid due to the infrastructure not working well as it couldn't handle sending out so many text messages - they mentioned that some people didn't receive a text message about it all until 2 days later! Though i imagine something has been in the pipeline for a while

So it never went off on phones on wifi??? I don’t have any mobile signals at my house (new build drama)

I will say MailOnline has been utterly ridiculous, even more than usual. I support a free presss but a world without the Mail sounds really nice.

I don’t think it’s going to work on older phones because they’re not enabled to allow the technology I guess. I read this morning that it won’t work on phones which don’t have 4G and upwards and phones which are only Wi-Fi enabled. But as you said, these things would likely be on the news or hopefully the local community would look out for each other so that everyone is aware should it go off for whatever reason.
*Japan has had it since what, 2015? We’re just slow AF. It’s not a big deal it’s just new.
