I've also turned it off because I'm chronically jumpy and could do without the mini heart attack, even if I know it's coming.

I keep my phone on me in work which isn’t allowed, so as much as I would like to see what happens when it goes off, it’s probably not worth the punishment… having said that, it would be a legit excuse to have it on me to see an alert in practice. Pinky promise I’m not browsing tattle… 
I lived in Edinburgh for years and always jumped when the 1 o'clock gun went off at 1 o'clock every single day
I was under the impression the alert would go off even if your phone was switched off so if anybody is switching phones off make sure to turn the alerts off in the settings in anycase or let the battery run down just to be sure - I cannot find confirmation but just spoke to my dad who seems to recall hearing something similar
I’ve left it on. Don’t see what the fuss is about personally but will need to cover my son’s ears as he cannot bear loud noises (sensory issues). I’m not even allowed to use the hoover unless he’s out of the room and he panics if someone sets a timer on the phone/smart speaker.
I think it's a good idea and have left mine on because I'm curious! I'm a bit nervous about how loud it will be but that's just because I'm nervy by nature.
I am leaving it on and plan on keeping it on -although some of my family members are turning theirs off so i guess i will be letting them know what is happening - I think it is more the noise for them but maybe if they see how mine goes (i think it said different phones may make a sound / speak?) they may or may not turn them back on.
For those that are easily scared/jumpy: try setting a regular alarm on your phone 5 mins or so before before with a lil reminder that way you won‘t forget and hopefully it won‘t bother you as much.
Can’t you put the silent mode ?
I’ve left mine on. We ve had terrible phone service in my town for months because a phone mast was taken down, they’re only just begining to sort it out!

What are we supposed to do anyway if there was a genuine emergency ,I’m not going outrun a tsunami or nuclear bomb

No it won't go off if your phone is off, or not in signal or on aeroplane mode.
I'm sure people have been saying it will though, there's been an insane amount of misinformation about it. Bringing all the loons out.

Reasons you will not get an alert
You will not receive alerts if your device is:

- connected to a 2G or 3G network
- wifi only
- not compatible
If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about an emergency. The emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a threat to life.
Emergency alerts will not replace local news, radio, television or social media.

I was going to turn it off as kids with additional needs and also sensitive myself as suspected Autistic and diagnosed dyspraxic. However I might leave it on as If there is ever a time in future its used more commonly then I suppose its getting them more familiar with hearing it. Will have to be prepared to settle them tomorrow though if I do

Tsunamis can usually be avoided with warning systems. People need to get to slightly higher ground to avoid drowning.
I lost my aunt and uncle in the 2004 boxing day tsunami. They were in the basement minimarket. If they had of had a few minutes notice they could have stayed in their apartment and survived it.
If there was a tsunami warning system in places and communicated by phones then most of the 230'000 people that were killed that day would have survived. Getting onto land 15 metres higher would have saved many of them. Ten mins notice would have saved most of them. But there was no notice so hundreds of thousands were right on the seafront when a wall of water hit.
Sorry about your family members ,I wasn’t making light of Tsunamis it was an awful tragedy, I was talking about my own personal situation, we wouldn’t have anywhere to run my area is pretty flat .
And we’d jam the roads pretty quick if we tried to escape. I remember seeing footage of people in America in gridlock on the freeways/highways when there was some evacuation due to storms a few years back. My city has a lot of one way nonsense in the centre and one day a van caught fire and people going to work (it was around 8.30am) were jammed all around the city for at least 2 hours. In the UK I think we are more likely to get localised alerts for flooding saying to not go out in the car, or, in high heat maybe we’ll get “drink some water”
