To be honest I feel like it was always going to go this way for him, an addict from a young age with access to millions and surrounded by yes people, it’s sad but not shocking

I get why he got charged too, but I feel a bit for the assistant here (pending further information obviously), it seems like he just followed Matthew's orders. I hope the doctors get what they deserve, but I definitely don't think the assistant deserves the same treatment as them.

But surely all addicts make the first choice to use drugs for the first time?! We all know drugs are addictive. So if you use them, you make a choice to go down the path that may lead to addiction. Whilst one may not choose to be an addict, they have chosen to take drugs, knowing the possible outcome.

Not always. Particularly in the US (to this day) people are prescribed hard painkillers for something super simple and become instantly heavily addicted. These types of painkillers are forbidden elsewhere or given in only extreme cases. They also don't wean patients off of these painkillers.

Matthew Perry's addictions started (if I remember right) with alcohol as a youth (and binge-drinking and further problems with alcohol are sadly very common everywhere) and spiralled with painkillers after an accident.

Add in psychological issues and it's a never-ending (or fatal) spiral.

I’m not trying to generalise but how many people with his level of income and influence get clean? From what I’ve seen people that manage to conquer addiction do so through hitting rock bottom. I don’t think MP ever got there. His money always saved him. His healthcare, his assistants, access to “clean” drugs (as in purity etc). Michael Jackson and Whitney ended up in a similar position- money buys doctors off, staff on payroll - surrounded by yes men.

Absolutely, I remember in particular David Schwimmer's tribute to him and you could tell they weren't close at all anymore. Even Lisa admitted they hadn't spoken in years when she wrote a prologue for his book.

I would have agreed, however after reading his book, I'm afraid it changed my opinion of him completely. Addiction aside, he didn't come across as a very nice man (and I'm the biggest friends fan!)

His autobiography was really uncomfortable reading as it was clear that even if not in active addiction, he was not in the right frame of mind to be documenting all his issues. There should have been a duty of care; I don’t believe he could have written it without the help of a ghost writer and even then, it was not well edited, it was heartbreakingly repetitive about his wish for a different life.
I did get the feeling that his friends castmates had distanced themselves in recent years - in the same way every person affected by another’s substance use wrestles with - but that Jennifer Anniston maybe felt she had to put something more emotional, due to everything he’d written about her.

I thought it was very interesting watching him on the reunion, he seemed less Hollywood than any of them, especially with the truth of ‘I don’t hear from anyone’
What they all had to cope with, such fame and intrusion etc he seemed to see through that life and couldn’t cope and lost his actual way whereas the others live and breathe Hollywood and coped in the way they needed the attention to thrive if that makes sense? Just my obs

I agree. I think he is a very intelligent and talented guy and, ironically, those are often the sort of people who seem most susceptible to addictions and mental health problems. Maybe because they think too deeply about things and can’t settle for just taking things as they come and rolling with life’s ups and downs.

I watched the reunion earlier. Joey & Phoebe still look good or at least naturally ageing and then it follows order of looking puffy, smooth or just not quite right; Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler.

Rachel & Monica are definitely all fillered up. It sort of makes them look out of focus? Like there are no hard lines.

Old Chandler looks in bad shape, poor chap. Maybe self inflicted but the contrast is jarring when they show clips of him in the show being sharp and charming then going back to him now hunched, smooth faced and barely talking. Hooray for Hollywood, da-da-da-daaaa!

Puffy is the right word for it; when will people learn that it just doesn't look right? I know Courtney Cox has expressed regret for messing with her face. Didn’t realise about Jennifer, and I felt very sad seeing Chandler. To me it seemed like they were treating him a bit like a puppy in one respect whilst also being afraid of what he was going to say. It did come across as a bit bitter. However saying that, I think it would have been good to be a little more real about the show. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, it would have been interesting to hear their thoughts on forever being typecast as their characters. I know they want it to be a celebration but too much positivity just feels a bit...fake.

Going back to the cosmetic thing, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore are good HHollywood examples of growing older gracefully. People are starting so young with the fillers these days, scary.

We have to remember it was a million dollars per episode in the nineties too, when one million bought a lot more than it does now. They did 22 episodes per season at one million a piece, for multiple series. That money, invested - especially in housing and especially in California - has meant none of them ever had to work again if they didn't want to or couldn't once the show finally wrapped.

No wonder Perry could afford such an insane addiction and why that corrupt doctor was just bragging about milking him for absurd amounts of money for supplying ketamine that would have cost her a tiny fraction of the money to obtain.

I’m reading his book and something, or a lot, has to be missing surely? He keeps making out as if his childhood was traumatic, but nothing happened?? His parents split up, but he still had a loving relationship with both. His mum worked long hours but his grandparents were close by and very hands-on by the sounds of it. Unless there’s something much darker he’s just not revealing, there just isn’t much trauma there. His mother refused the paint the yard blue at his insistance – is that it?! Sorry, but I reserve my pity for little Justin Trudeau whose life this horrible little brat obviously made difficult.

MP is obviously very witty and articulate, but in the main, VERY selfish. The way he’d sob whenever someone was beating him at tennis, right through to HAVING to have the last line in the last episode. Not to mention how he obviously treats his own mother and girlfriends.

I’m not surprised that no-one contacts him. I wouldn’t either tbh! You reap what you sow and he seems quite nasty. He made Friends what is was though and it obviously cost him everything.

That's a massive jacuzzi more like a swimming pool. Easy to see how one could fall asleep by accident and drown (if that's what happened)

This reminds me an awful lot of the drama that surrounded Heath Ledger's death. They went after Mary-Kate Olsen who's long been rumored to be a celebrity drug dealer, and who was the first person who was called by the masseuse who found Ledger's body. Mary-Kate lawyered up quickly, secured immunity, and the whole episode was quickly swept under the rug.

As for Perry, he chose to take drugs again and again throughout his life. The drugs that killed him weren't laced. He knew what he was doing. Trying to shift the blame onto some wicked woman is standard Hollywood tabloid BS.

No but considering he'd had 3 doses and the thrid was a big one and he was getting in the hot tub he should have. Passing out on the sofa, bed or floor is very different to being in water where you're gonna drown.

They got 1 mil per episode for the last season only.
David and Jennifer got the highest salaries those first 2 or so seasons, even though Courteney was better known than Jennifer. This was due to the Ross-and-Rachel story.
David had the idea for the cast to basically be a union and negotiate together, he and Jen took pay cuts for a season or two for that to work.
They get around 20 mil each year from syndication alone. Even without investments, none of them have had to work since Friends ended.
