All the “it’s a family business” are deliberately obfuscating the point. There’s nothing wrong with handing over the reigns to a family member but they’ve got to have demonstrated they can do the job.

Say what you want about the Murdoch kids, but they’ve been running smaller parts of the empire for decades, cutting their teeth. They’ve made a lot of public mistakes and god knows it’s obvious they didn’t get much protection/ soft landing from Rupert when they did.

How can you be a strong CEO if mum and dad have made it so easy for you to move up.

CEO’s usually have a remit around change-management: they need to move the business from point A to point B. It can be gruelling, especially in media companies which are all really doing it tough right now. It takes soft and hard skills, it takes EXPERIENCE.

but yeah it’s a private company and there’s no shareholders - so aside from the 200ish employees, he doesn’t really have a duty of care to succeed I suppose. The market can ultimately decide.

That’s such a good point re private company! I assume it has a board though? And surely they are a bit more agnostic with their expectations of the CEO and their deliverables?

the board is Jason! They don’t even seem to have non-executive advisors.

yes, I guess as they’re claiming this is purely about family succession, maybe Luca doesn’t have a change agenda beyond, Don’t duck It All Up.

My favourite part of the Outloud podcast with Luca was when he said he was glad he worked with family because it would be so hard to come home and have to explain to an outsider what a podcast is.

They really have an inflated idea of themselves if they think podcasting and selling ads on podcasts is far too complex for an ordinary person to understand. They live in such a bubble.

I wonder how the advertising team feels about wheeling him out to market, if he’s going to mansplain podcasts to CMOs and agency heads.

what about the spin on this that it is all just more 'efficient'
Mia has made this point when being criticised for dropping friends once they stop working with/for her, having friends you work for is just so much more effiecient
What a shallow view of the world they all have.
