I do remember him (Billy) saying something about "being told" JG was dead, so you could be right!
They knew he was dead when he stopped using his phone. Billy's original story was he argued on phone to JG, said stuff he regrets or something. DG said JG was lured there by some loyalist para group. The JFJG protests, the news articles, it was all crazy
