They absolutely had an unprecedented relationship with the media. How many other parents of missing children have professional media spokespeople including former government spin-doctors, hire image management consultants and engage high profile libel lawyers to threaten or sue anyone (Amaral, Pat Brown etc) who publish different opinions that contradict the abduction theory? Why do they even care what other theories are out there? If Madeleine is really missing, abducted by god-knows-who, and you know that for sure deep down in your soul, why waste time and (publicly donated) money on what other people say about you?
The ONLY focus of parents of missing children is getting that child back, and enduring the intense suffering that comes with not knowing where they are and imagining the horrors they’re going through. It’s all they eat, sleep and breathe. The focus is not writing blogs describing what you had for dinner (Gerry), setting up ways for people to give you money, hiring media managers, laughing on breakfast TV sofas, suing authors who want to express different opinions, speaking at the Leveson inquiry or going on friendly Oprah interviews where they’ll be asked the softest of soft questions. Why do they even care about their public image when their daughter has been apparently abducted and they don’t know where she is!
