She isn't a psychopath, nor a sadist, not a narcissist, or machiavellian.

Now it becomes a far more interesting question.
And you know that how? Anyway not interested in a discussion about the evil witch's personality. This thread is about the facts

To be fair, people seem much more comfortable arguing the toss about insulin assays, and there are multiple pile-on about that, but when it's asked "why", or what drove Lucy Letby to commit those crimes, people seem more reluctant to offer a reason.

It's interesting to see that lack of balance skewing any perceptions, and consequentially, discussions about her.
There were lots of discussions about why during the original trial.
people have theories but obviously nothing has actually been confirmed because she hasn’t admitted her guilt so regardless of any of the discussions and theories people have, you can’t “prove them”.

My own personal theory was she thrived on the attention. We’ve learned through the enquiry she actually wasn’t a very good nurse. Her parents evidently held her to quite a high standard and I think she started hurting babies probably quite early on in her nursing career due to her frustrations of not “getting it”. Then I think she got addicted to many thing, getting away with it, loving the chaos she caused, initially I also think she enjoyed being part of the “saving”. Then I just think it continued and like any other serial killer, she worked her way up to murder from lesser actions and experimented with methods.
I think she also thrived on the grief of the parents. Again, these are my own personal views from what we have seen.

I actually would also argue there could be an element of narcissism/psychopathy traits present in her personality. Just because she wasn’t given a formal “psychiatric” diagnosis when she was assessed as fit for trial, doesn’t mean she definitely doesn’t have a personality disorder or traits of a personality disorder

In terms of understanding 'why she did it', it does seem a bit of a pointless exercise, althought it's the aspect that interests and frustrates me more than anything.
As I've said before, I think Letby has convinced herself that she's innocent, especially with the 'benefits' of time passed. I believe she has something of a dual persona ongoing, which makes it quite easy and possible for her to detach herself from the more hideous aspects of what she's done. It doesn't have to 'fit' any existing model of a psycopathy. There are always outliers or unique situations, simply because we are all individuals. There may well be commonalities with the behaviour of other serial killers but by the very nature of individuality, no two pathways to murdering are exactly the same. Unless Letby became willing to confront the aspects of her personality which enabled her to harm and kill, nobody is going to be any wiser. The best of the best haven't been able to figure it out and I think she's a million miles away from facing it. While there are people storming her cause and giving her merit, the chances of her coming clean are even more remote.....if any of that makes sense.

The only thing that gives me any ease is that I don't think there's any imminent prospect of her release.
I agree with all of this. It’s what I’ve thought for ages but couldn’t articulate it. I admit I’m fascinated with her personality and would like to know more about her psychological profile.

I mainly lurk but my theory goes back to her failing nursing at first for showing no empathy. She had to change to pass her nursing and created ‘small time’ situations in which she could show she actually had empathy. At first probably a little harm to be the hero to prove she was ‘good enough’. But then took it further and further and would explain why she was so over the top about putting the baby boxes together after she passed and keeping photos of her sympathy cards, the way the written notes after therapy was wrote etc. (of course this is just a small part of all her madness I’m not saying I think this is the full story)

She probably is a covert narcissist. Had to be the best.
Agreed. The crimes could only have been committed by someone with zero emphany. She showed a lack a self preservation by continuing to attack as the doctors grew concerned over the high mortality and by keeping the post it notes.

I think she probably coukdnt help herself at the end even though she knew the net was closing, killers always get caught, and the more she harmed, the less careful she was. The attack on baby O was one of pure rage.

She fabricated a story about the aftermath of Baby A's death (screenshot below from the transcript of Mother A&B's evidence to the Thirlwall Inquiry), one assumes in order to elicit attention and sympathy from her friends

How anyone can even pretend that she was a normal twenty something is beyond me.

I followed these threads all through but stepped away after as I found the increasingly louder shes innocent voices in the media troubling. It really concerns me that she will get out because of more recent medical voices adding to this and public pressure. The thought of her out in public is honestly chilling

I doubt it i really do. There are massive holes in what the self titled creme de la creme came up with, massive questions over Lee's new paper which looks to have been specifically written to fit the narrative, paucity of actual experts, they had neonatal experts, a nurse and a couple of engineers. No forensic pathologists, no endocrinologist, no radiologist. There was absolutely nothing new in what was said, most of it had either been covered in the trial, or in Lee's case, thrown out at appeal. She's never getting free.

That’s reassuring, because like the poster above, I too have found it really worrying that her appeal will be granted. The LL innocent brigade really infuriate me and make me sick to my stomach, so I can’t imagine how the parents of the victims are feeling.

I can't see any way her appeal gets allowed on what we've heard. If it was then that would mean they'd made an exception for Letby by allowing her to use expert evidence in appeal when she didn't use it at trial without a reasonable explanation why. This would then create a precedent allowing all defendants to use one strategy at trial then if that fails have another go at appeal with a different approach. It shouldn't really get any further than the Commission but they may pass the buck to the Appeal court just to avoid more bad press.

Yeah agree. The CCRC shouldn't pass it back to CoA because they need to do their job properly but like you say, they may pass the buck. But then once it comes up against the appeal judges she's done. Nowhere else to go. And serves her bloody well right

I’ve been mildly interested in what drove Lucy’s murderous behaviour but I’m actually way more interested in the systems that should have prevented it. As a society there will unfortunately always be rogue individuals who cause untold harm but as a society we should be looking to learn how to prevent that harm from running unchecked. I really hope the recommendations from the Thirlwall Inquiry will be implemented but the cynic in me expects they will mainly gather dust in a drawer somewhere.

After listening to the enquiry I'm absolutely convinced this was her revenge for failing parts of her nursing training. She's clearly been raised by her oddball parents to believe she is perfect, gets a hard kick of reality when she fails, it hurts her ego so much that she decides she'll show them. She kills babies as revenge but also to gain some power back that she feels she's lost after that blow to her ego. This then explains the 'I killed them on purpose because I wasn't good enough to care for them'.

I also think this is her reacting to her parents. She had zero control over her own life, they controlled everything she did, she had to ho on holiday with them, they bought her house and car abd basically still ordered her around abd ran her life for her. I think this is her being controlling because she could and she wasn't able to control much else in her life.
