A month earlier Jane Hawdon told IC that more than one unexpected NNU raises suspicions yet they go to the police thinking its all in the consultants heads.
It’s interesting that out of the 4 babies (additional to those JH identified) the consultants felt should be looked at in greater depth, two are non indictment babies. Imagine the pain of those families waiting for justice/answers. Horrendous.

I really cannot understand why, if you were innocent, you would not want the police called in or to be taken off duties so you could prove you weren't the cause.
Unless, of course, you're a bleeping baby murderer.

Okay mmbop, I've channelled you whilst writing my update, so here goes 😂. Also, sorry in advance if there's spelling/grammar mistakes, I just wanted to get it all out whilst I remember.

I feel completely drained after today, it’s been an intense day. I was there with our friend who travelled down from Scotland, and we ended up sitting next to a lovely person who used to work with TC, AK, and IH. They had so much to say about the executives, and honestly, none of it was flattering. There were plenty of NHS and healthcare professionals present as well, including some who had worked at COCH during the events in question.

We were sitting quite close to TC, so I had a clear view of him throughout. While we waited for Lady Thirlwall to arrive, I watched him reading through his documents, and it was obvious how nervous he was. His hands were shaking, and the papers trembled in his grip (NGL I reveled in seeing this 😂). During his testimony, the nerves were even more evident: he was sweating profusely and drinking water constantly. Whether it was anxiety or the weight of maintaining his version of events/lies/guilt, it was hard to say.

In some ways, his demeanour reminded me of Dominic West in The Crown, the same way of carrying himself, with an almost performative quality. Early on, KC Poer asked him three separate times whether he would accept personal failure. Each time, instead of answering, he launched into long-winded speeches, full of deflection and generalisations. This was barely 15 minutes into his testimony, and already, he was avoiding responsibility. Most of his responses relied heavily on collective terms like “we,” “the trust,” and “our team,” while he rarely used “I.” It reminded me of Letby’s language, carefully avoiding anything that could pin accountability directly on him. He kept insisting that his actions were correct at the time.

When questioned about why he hadn’t taken the doctors’ concerns seriously, he dismissed it by saying something like, “I can’t just go with a gut feeling.” Later, when safeguarding was brought up, he shifted the blame entirely, asking, “Why didn’t they go to the police?” It was exhausting to listen to, his tone was so obtuse and defensive. He often interrupted the KC Poer with loud, forceful interjections like “AND…” as if trying to dominate the exchange. BNE 2, to his credit, kept control, but clearly looked exasperated by the end. Lady Thirlwall didn’t miss a beat either, stepping in to tell TC off at one point: “Just answer the question" with a stern tone.

At one point, when the bullying allegations came up, I noticed TC clenching his hand into a fist, clearly controlling his anger. It made me think back to Saladi’s evidence, where TC reportedly banged his fist on the table and told consultants they needed to “draw a line under this” (or something to that effect). His anger seemed barely restrained, but it was there, simmering under the surface.

What shocked me the most, though, was his attitude when he started boasting about his successes; completely unprompted and out of context. His face showed unmistakable signs of contempt, and he looked almost proud. It was so inappropriate for the situation, and I felt absolutely disgusted. This was neither the time nor the place for self congratulation 🤬

There was a moment where they discussed his commitment (I think, I didn't take notes so i'm just going from memory), and while his words projected confidence, his body language told a different story. He looked uneasy, as though he didn’t fully believe what he was saying. Ie - for example and words to this effect "Yes, I believe we were all commited to patient safety" but he kept shaking his head, as to say no (incongruence). Like Letby and others, he seemed to have a highly selective memory, conveniently forgetting key details, claiming he hadn’t read reports, or insisting no one had told him. It was an exhausting pattern: deflect, deny, avoid. Rinse and repeat from 10am till just after 6pm.

What struck me most about today was the atmosphere in the courtroom. People who had worked at COCH during that time, or who were familiar with the events, exchanged glances and quietly shook their heads, lots of sighs, etc at some of his responses. You could feel the frustration and disbelief in the air. It wasn’t just his answers, it was the way he carried himself, the interruptions, the deflections, and that misplaced sense of pride. I can't speak for everyone, but the ones I did, it left a bitter taste for us, and a lot of fkn anger.

It’s hard to ignore his over-reliance on “we” and “the trust” rather than “I” highlights how accountability was so often diluted. Decisions were made "collectively", and blame was shared, or avoided altogether. It’s a pattern we’ve seen repeatedly in this inquiry (and LL), and it’s both infuriating and heartbreaking.

By the end of the day, he seemed like a man clinging to his reputation, unwilling or unable to take responsibility for the harm caused under his leadership. It was angering, exhausting and utterly disgusting, and more to come from this scumbag tomorrow! I’ll need to read the transcript to fully process it all but here's what I can remember at the moment x

Ps well done if you've reached this far 😂😘♥

TLDR
The ‘speak out safely’ committee went back to old meeting notes and removed a sentence. After the police requested notes.

Long version:

Feb 2017 - meeting notes suggest committee agreed not to log consultants concerns under SOS policy

IMG_2598.jpeg

24th Apr 2017 - meeting notes say they don’t recall agreeing that
IMG_2599.jpeg

6th June 2017 meeting (so after police involved) the minutes show police have requested documents, there seems to be confusion over what was agreed and they decide to remove the sentence I highlighted above from the April notes

IMG_2600.jpeg

Revised April notes, now missing ‘members did not recall…’ sentence:

BNE2 is suggesting they are attempting to rewrite the past now the police were involved

Thanks so much for sharing. I could feel the tension in that room through your words! I can just imagine. What a long hard day for everyone (except TC. Don’t give a tit about him). I can’t imagine how exhausted KC Poer is. I think he’s done all the execs this week! He has to be so on the ball for any response and from what I’ve seen in transcripts and reporting so far he’s not missing a beat.

I wish to God they had live streamed him. People need to see what these execs are like and them having the same 5 mins max per day broadcast rule as all other witnesses is frustrating. They didn’t deserve the same level of protection.

@Dolly Daydreaming please can you let us know if the ‘Letby’s dad threatened guns to my head’ came across as a figure of speech thing - did the KC try to clarify that? Because some of the media seem to be taking it literally.

I wasn't there but itv news had the clip of him saying that and it sounded to me like the Letby thug actually threatened a gun. I don't know if he clarified whether it was literal or figurative later, but that's how it sounded to ms

I think it might have been a figure of speech, but TC described JL as threatening throughout, and said something like, "You felt JL’s presence even when he wasn’t there." The way he spoke gave me the impression that JL had an almost oppressive/domineering influence over the process: ruling it and, in many, many ways, derailing it. TC seemed to suggest that the executives were fearful of JL and his threats (ie report the consultants to the GMC, etc) and this fear may have dictated many of their decisions. It all unfolded quite quickly during this part of the testimony, but that sense of unease and intimidation came through clearly. I asked the new friend we met if she knew if TC was a mason, and she said as far she knows, he's not, but that's not to say he wasn't. I'll ask my them tomorrow when I see them what they thought x

Thank you @Dolly Daydreaming 👏🏼💖

Has anybody started Sue Hodkinson’s testimony yet? Coming across as a bit odd and full on. She keeps calling herself a “people professional”.

I finished today thanks to a couple of long car journeys (I wasn’t driving 😆). She’s the worst of them all so far for me! Sleazy Tony sounds like he could take number one spot soon though 😒

Were you able to express your outrage to the people in the car with you?

I’ve been pondering if we will ever hear from the Letby’s publicly, now they are garnering so much attention this week. We’ve certainly seen evidence of how they like to have their say! They must be absolutely furious, especially with TC today. The injustice against their daughter and now them!

Just reading the telegraph updates now. TC repeating what the truthers say. I hope BNE2 challenged him on this.

Surprised the telegraph actually wrote the last bit at the end.

View attachment 3291117View attachment 3291116
He said this, despite knowing that the consultants gave their professional opinion and challenged this view on both counts in writing. It was also pointed out that the last paragraph wasn't accurate but was his version of the truth. It was also pointed out by Skelton and De La Poer that this outcome did not exclude the hypothesis that deliberate harm was being done by Letby. It proved that either Letby was doing harm, the acuity was the problem or both. This did not explicitly exclude harm and as such he failed to act on the remaining unexcluded risk ie potential criminality. A risk which he had failed to enter on the Trust risk register, but did remember to add a risk about reputational damage from contacting the police. Just think abut that last point and then ask if he was lying when he said wasn't concerned with reputation and only concerned with patient safety.

He’s made me so angry with this last paragraph.sorry posting it again. It’s not even true because they are EXPLAINED! But he’s downplaying the seriousness of a baby killer here! As if the NHS failings are worse than someone deliberately killing babies!

The "expert" report he commissioned said that unexplained deaths in neonates was very rare. However, he prefers not to take advice from his experts as we have already heard.

They are very selective about which parts of her report they use. Anything that suggests natural causes gets mentioned. Anything that suggests further forensic view, unascertained deaths, rare for unexplained deaths in neonates etc gets ignored.

@MmmB777 I’m up to lunchtime now on Smelly Kelly and I keep wanting to throw my phone at the wall. No wonder the days are long when the KC has to keep repeating the questions he wants answering because she just keeps repeating the same nonsense about ‘we didn’t have enough information. I’m an executive, I’m too busy to be dealing with dead babies. I relied on everybody below. Nobody came to me. I don’t read any emails whatsoever etc’. The amount of times he has to ask her to focus on the question - the word focus/focusing is used around 30 times. And he doesn’t always use it, sometimes he says ‘no listen to my question please’. They could have easily finished before 4pm if she wasn’t bullshiting so much.
The section around the thematic review was particularly tiresome. whether she did or didn’t read it and why she didn’t tell CQC. There were multiple paragraphs of her skirting around the questions he were asking. And now she’s doing the same around why she took no action after the babies O and P died. I obviously need to read TC eventually and no doubt he’s hugely responsible, but she was the one kept informed right in the moment, as it happened. She could have stepped in over Rees and Powell. Instead she’s just putting the responsibilty on them because as an exec she can’t do everything.
