What a poor article, doesn’t say anything. Who compiled this information for the ‘audit’ and whst are the details? This is literally all it says before it goes into stuff we’ve heard already about Mark McD working towards going to the CCRC

We already know the number of deaths on the neonatal unit during the indictment period, there were thirteen of them and Letby was on duty for either all of or all bar one of them

Looks like they are using overall death data for the hospital. So an old lady died on the geriatric ward and Letby was not on duty. Free Lucy!

I was expecting some sort of new information in this article. It's just a clickbait headline with absolutely no new information from what I can gather. What are these rapid deteriorations that they are going on about?

What's this broader spike that is apparently "bolstering Letbys argument"

It's honestly, horseshit.

I'm sure it will garner a few new believers to the Letby truther movement though...

Doesn't really make sense, does it? " An audit of baby's death show many of the most rapid deterioration occured when Lucy was not on duty" yet she was on duty for all of baby's death on NNU. Unless its looking at the deaths that occured just after she finished duty? it may mean the number of still births and cot deaths that occured in Chester at that period, which didn't have anything to do with NNU.
---
The article seems to be a mish mash of evidence we've heard before rehashed to sound like breaking news.

Where are they getting the NNU deaths excluded because Letby was not on duty from? She was present for all?

As you say it's a mish mash - seemingly designed to confuse and to mislead. The "number of baby deaths" when Letby was not on duty refers to the letter Peter Elston and the 24 experts wrote before we knew there were only 13 - at that time the figure of 17 from the FOI request was being used. The article then embellishes it by saying Letby's review team are going to "remedy" this which is nonsense because there is nothing to remedy

I guess it's possible the "babies who went downhill fastest" might be the infants who Dewi Evans had concerns about but noone was charged - Mark McDonald probably has all this information. Or it could be the babies who died away from the NNU.

Having listened to the audio of Coffey and Moritz’s book, I agree with what others said - it doesn’t really add anything that we hadn’t already had from other sources previously. A few stand out points for me were :-
* I may have missed hearing about it previously but they gave details of the atmosphere in court and LL’s demeanour when the first partial verdicts were returned on the insulin cases.
Judith said you could hear a pin drop when the jury came back in and LL was apparently shocked as probably didn’t expect it and then when reality hit that she was never walking out the front door of the court, she did actually cry ( for herself, obviously…)
She was then taken down to the cells a convicted criminal. It painted a powerful visual .

*the other parts I found interesting were the discussion re: psychological profile and guessing a motive ( having discussed with various experts)
It seems to be that she didn’t react in a ‘normal human way’ when being arrested and interviewed. Her lack of expression and failure to be upset was a flag - yet none of the experts spoken to seemed to think she fitted a psychopathic profile and that borderline personality disorder BPD was more likely.

One of the court artists ( Elizabeth something…) said she’d only ever seen another criminal so devoid of any reaction or expression the whole time she was in court - and that was Rose West.

They compared and contrasted LL with Allitt and came up with nothing interesting - Allitt was a clear nut job who was affable to work with but no one was actually surprised when she was arrested.

Motive-wise, they chucked a few ideas out there, including “God Complex” a-la-Shipman but ultimately rejected this in favour of attention and validation-seeking. Interestingly one school (or uni ) friend said that Letby didn’t seem passionate about the subjects she took - b but she seemed to give an air that it was more important to be seen to be good at the subjects rather than have a subjective love of the subject. This definitely is an insightful comment.

*Judith & Jonathan seemed disappointingly to pretty much accept that because there had been no dirt dished about LL’s past that she had a lovely childhood etc. To me it sounds like her parents were overbearing and an echo chamber for everything she said/did. I think many of us on here have said similar.

*there was a huge chapter on the medical evidence - especially on Dr Shoo Lee and the air embolism arguments. And Dewi Evans copped some flack for changing his mind on the stand,

All in all, I thought it was balanced. It gave nothing away on Letby as a proper 3 dimensional person (good or bad) you could sense the frustration and bewilderment of the writers at not being able to give more.

other bits: They were both complimentary of Steve Brearey who they were very clear to say never sought any limelight. Ravi Jayaram they treated differently, painting him as loving a bit of media attention.

Names for this week. Chris Green was the one who conducted Letby’s grievance which I think he has come across as biased towards Letby rather than investigate from a neutral postion. Also think Hayley Griffiths will be interesting - was she in the WhatsApp group or was that someone else?

The following week is an Alder Hey pathologist, assuming one who has conducted some of the post mortems on the babies. I have wanted to hear from them since the trial. I have so many questions for them myself!!!

I must admit I have found this book interesting though agree it doesn’t add a massive amount to what’s in the public domain already. I do believe something weird has gone on within the family dynamic with that bunch, she definitely thinks she’s a cut above intellectually when in fact she was a pretty tit nurse but pointedly made friends with those who eventually enabled her. I think she’s a psychopath with very low self esteem.
She saw happy families and wanted to destroy what they had because they were and had everything that she wasn’t or would ever have … maybe deep down she knew they would catch her in the end and by the end she was literally out of control but couldn’t stop as it gave her the only power she would ever have.
I was looking at the CCRC website last night and they only refer 3% of cases back to the COA and within thise 70-80% are successful.
They have listed some cases and outcomes on their website which is an interesting read.
She will die behind bars.

I think unless Mark Mcdonald can find some shocking new evidence such as ignored medical results or another poisoner at COCH, the appeal will go nowhere. The statisticians makes out Lucia De Berk and Sally Clark were freed due to the dodgy statistics being exposed, where actually in both cases there was new medical evidence proving their victims actually died of natural causes.

Really interested in the chair of the grievance panel too - Annette Weatherley - from a different hospital I think and should have been ‘independent’.

I can’t warm to MM
Called in 97 and still not a silk ?
Mmmmm.
He seems to be the go-to barrister for convicted nurse serial killers - he has represented Ben Geen and Colin Norris for many years. Also Michael Stone. The murderers he has represented are all still in prison.

I finished reading 'Unmasking Lucy Letby', I did like it as a thorough account of the matter and it was helpful that they addressed some of the 'for and against', which would hopefully lead any rational reader new to the case, to realise it isn't about statistics or a conspiracy etc. But I didn't feel that I learned anything new about the trial or about Letby, really.

I was hoping for some good psychological insight into the making of this serial killer, because I think that is the most mystifying part of the story, but even though they spoke to experts, they didn't really explain it. If I understood correctly, the experts were saying she wasn't like a typical killer. They compared her and other thrill seekers, such as base jumpers - most of us don't need to take huge risks to be satisfied in life, some want to jump off buildings. Was Letby's killings thrill seeking? Also, there was a comparison to Harold Shipman in that apparently most of his murders were in the afternoon shift when he was bored, and they were saying was Letby doing it when she was bored too.

I think the experts had poor analysis of Letby because they were basing their opinions on flawed data - what we knew about Letby at the trial vs some of the things coming out at the Inquiry, paint her in a different light:
  • The book cites her school friends saying they will never believe Letby is a killer, but we now know she was such a liar that her work best friend didn't even know Letby was in contact with Dr Noname, let alone not realising that she wasn't Letby's only confidante.
  • The book also mentions that lots of nurses still support her, but I wonder if that is true. Maybe her best friend did at the start of the trial? Clearly not now. I think a lot of people who supported her from work (at least those at the Inquiry) have now realised they were 'played' or they are only loyal because to believe in her guilt will cause them psychic distress because they totally failed to do their jobs properly and they have to justify it to themselves
  • we knew she had overprotective parents, but the apparent hysteria on a phone call by her mum and her parents blatantly writing her monologue statement, takes all that to another level
  • The book still thinks she was a perfect and conscientious student because the authors wrote it before we found out she failed her final year, gave wrong drugs and an overdose

Anyway I am happy with my purchase, enjoyed it, its not perfect, but hopefully they are writing some new chapters now based on the Inquiry and I hope they will go back and get some more criminologists and psychiatrists or whatever, to reconsider their views on what caused Letby to be like this
Thank you for this. It's a really helpful review of the book.

Saw this on TikTok and reading the comments, I had to come here to see I wasn’t the last person who believed she is guilty. Why is everyone suddenly thinking she’s innocent. “Watch the documentary it’ll change your mind!” No it won’t!
“I’ve said from day 1 that she’s innocent” why? That was possibly said on day 1 that made you believe with your whole chest that she was innocent? Because she doesn’t look like a child killer? Someone actually commented that they need to look at the parents😱Am I wrong and they are all right and this has been a mistake?! I don’t believe that

I don't think that he will show up. It's why he's ducked off to France

Another former employee added: 'Around the time he retired, I asked Harvey whether he thought there could be a public inquiry into what had happened and his words were, "They would have to find me first", which bothered me.

'He was implying he would be long gone. The paediatricians definitely forced his hand - they told him if you don't go to the police we will. There was a lot of dragging of feet. They were frustrated.'

The former hospital boss is now enjoying his retirement in France, where he lives with his second wife in a picturesque farmhouse surrounded by acres of land.
If he doesn’t show, I have a feeling the tabloid press might hunt him down and doorstep him. In fact, I hope that they do. Slimy b clearly has no conscience otherwise he’d be more than willing to cooperate with the inquiry.
