It’s always been six weeks in England. My son has just finished his reception (first) year so it’s our first proper summer holidays when he’s used to five days a week at school. He has complex needs so it’s hard to find activities to do that he’ll enjoy. And it’s just me as a single mum. I just don’t have the same resources and capacity as they do at school to keep him stimulated although I think he’s welcoming the chill time. So it’s a long break. I think I’d prefer 3-4 weeks. We do have a holiday coming up soon which will break the six weeks up at least. So have they increased the school holidays to 6 weeks in summer, or decreased it to 6 weeks? Why do you oppose it? We have children home from the first week of June till the 3rd or 4th week of August in our area. Some states have school all year with a few breaks spread out. The children (and teachers!) love having the whole summer off so much - I know I always did. I realize some children suffer through it when their home lives are lacking, and that is heartbreaking to even think about, but there are programs available for them. There are free lunches and summer schools for low income children in most places that need them.
