When I was younger, I was guilty of telling people too much about myself. Without sounding paranoid, you really do need to be careful who you let into your life, even just sharing your opinions about certain things. I'll leave it at that, but it's definitely a hard lesson I learned.

The best lessons (all from my mum lol):
Time will pass whether you use it wisely or not, so you'd best use it doing things that bring you joy.
We can always earn more money but we can't earn more time, so don't choose making money over spending time with loved ones.
People rarely hear how good they are but often have their flaws pointed out to them. Be someone who tells people what you appreciate in them and do it often.

The hardest lesson is that you never know when the last time you'll speak to someone is. I've lost a lot of people and I never knew the last time I spoke to them would be the last.

That you can’t trust anyone, the only person who has your best interests at heart is you.

that the people who aren’t supposed to let you down in life will.

Your gut instinct is nearly always right.
This is so true. It has often saved me.

Another lesson that I am coming to believe applies to most people is that we will all have some kind of trauma that will redirect us and change the course we take from that point on.
For me it was an accident, for others it may be a loss of a loved one, an abusive relationship, or a battle with a disease. That trauma can change your opinions of the people you were close to, or where you choose to live, how much you trust people moving forward, it may even change your personality (make you more anxious or more resilient, more introverted or more adventurous).
More and more, I find that everyone has had a life-altering experience, and many of them have had profound ripple effects in their lives as a result.

Someone told me in my early 30s that as you age, you care less about what people think of you. At the time I thought that was ridiculous, but now that I'm older wholeheartedly agree. You can't change what people think or say about you; all you can do is change how you react. And nobody's opinion is really worth hearing anyway. Live your life for you, and be happy.

In my experience no one is EVER a friend!
I’m not sure I’ve ever actually had a person I can call a real friend

I've been thinking a lot about this overnight and it is so true. In a similar vein I read recently that most people will have three true loves in their lifetime, each intended to teach them certain things ... certainly thought-provoking.

I've thought of another one: those who shout the loudest have the most to hide is the saying (paraphrasing), and it is very true in my experience. Also, people who tell you how wealthy / in love / successful they are ... generally aren't. They're just people who like to make a lot of noise.
