Learning to drive #2

My instructor thinks I'm ready for a test in a few weeks, so wants to look for cancellations. I disagree! We've only been through the manoeuvres once and there's some things I still struggle with like changing lanes on dual carriageways. I would've thought we'd practice manoeuvres quite a bit, but we haven't.

How long have you been learning? I’ve never heard anyone be ready after practicing manoeuvres once

Trust your gut! Tests are £60 so not cheap, don’t rush into it if you don’t feel ready.

Do you like your instructor? Could be worth communicating that you don’t feel ready with them, if they don’t support that then look for a new one. Definitely seems strange to be pushing a test so soon, unless you are just a better driver than you think you are! It all comes down to confidence. X

I have a test booked for end of October, and I thought that was a decent goal to work towards, so I was really surprised when he started talking about taking one soon. I think I might be giving him a false impression - I like the driving aspect, town driving especially, but we seem to do the same things on lessons, and when I've messed up we might revisit the problem on the same lesson where I get it right, but we never revisit it again.
I will have to say something, he is pretty approachable but I can't help feeling he just wants me gone and out the way! I feel like even if I fluked a pass I wouldn't feel safe.

Take it from me who spent almost a year with a crappy instructor, if you have your doubts then definitely look for a new instructor. The second I changed mine I felt so much better, I had lost all my confidence with my old one! I then passed with the new one in 3/4 months.

don’t waste your time, this is expensive and also your future!!

Finally got a date for my test 🙃 Reversing around a corner is going to haunt me. I get so frustrated with it - always end up taking it too wide. 3 weeks to get it down

not one single test available to book in my area, have had the cancellations app for about 4-5 months and there's been around 4 cancelled tests released in that time. absolutely crazy, not sure what we're actually meant to do?

I keep hearing from my instructor that people are going for tests when they're clearly not ready, mainly because getting a test is so hard they don't want to give up their pre-booked slot and hope they just wing it and get lucky and pass. Really annoying if you are totally test ready but can't get a test.

I’m learning to drive, and the past 2 weeks I’ve completely felt like a beginner and made silly mistakes! My instructor said it happens to everyone but I was so gutted :( prior to this I was fine - but suddenly my confidence has been wobbly! Anyone else had this? I’ve had 15-18 lessons so far

Yes I did this too. I also forgot basics like indicating. It happened after about 12 lessons for me, it’s definitely a phase though.

It’s annoying I felt like I knew nothing! Hopefully tomorrow’s lesson is better! Did you find it went after a few lessons?

This seems very normal. In a way it shows you are improving I think because you are very aware of things you’re doing wrong if that makes sense? It’s a frustrating process at times because learning to drive isn’t a linear process, some days you’ll be better than others but hopefully you’ll generally be improving! Just try and stick with it and it will pass. Getting annoyed at myself over it just made it worse!

(and if it makes you feel better I’ve passed my test and I left my indicator on for ages after I’d come off a roundabout the other day 🤦‍♀️ things just happen sometimes!)

That definitely makes sense 😁

Yes, it only happened in 1 or 2 lessons then I was back doing what I should be doing. It is weird though, like suddenly taking two steps backwards. I wondered if it was my brain saying it can’t handle all this new information!

I learned to drive about 4 years ago and then covid hit so I had no reason to drive - now it’s really hard to park where I live (inner city) so I’m petrified of bashing up someone’s car while parallel parking as I’ve gotten rusty

I’ve called like 4 different places asking to do some refresher lessons and pass plus and they’re so busy they’ve shut their waiting lists! So frustrating as I have a new job i want to be able to drive for 😤

That’s exactly how I felt! It was so weird I felt like it was someone else driving 🤣

Hi 🥹

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I want to pass my test. I started learning in 2017 and after a horrifying driving test I have never attempted to drive again. The examiner was horrible. She kept making snarky comments when I’d make mistakes because I was nervous and was just overall a horrible person. It’s been a long time and I’ve definitely developed a phobia over learning again. I’ve been going to a hypnotherapist to deal with my anxiety and I’m improving 🥹 We’ve come to the conclusion that if I could start learning again and pass my test then I would have 100% beaten my anxiety and I genuinely think I’d be on top of the world

I wanted to join the thread to keep myself accountable for getting the ball rolling. First things first is passing my theory as it’s expired. Luckily I have 2 years left on my provisional license so I want to pass before the 2 years. If anyone has any tips or advice I’d be grateful!

I really feel for you as it took me years of start / stopping lessons and finally being able to take my test due to huge anxiety. For me it wasn’t about the test but just driving itself and I was awful at allowing myself to be a learner and to be bad at something, so I put an awful lot of pressure on myself.

For me what finally helped was honestly just finding the best instructor for me. I had 4 different instructors until I finally found my perfect one. From the first lesson he knew I was anxious, he tailored his lessons to me perfectly, was so calm and chilled that it finally rubbed off on me.

Is it worth asking around / asking for recommendations (like on a local Facebook page for your area or similar) for driving instructors who are maybe especially good dealing with nervous/anxious learners?

Are you hoping to start lessons and do your theory at the same time or do your theory first? All the best for getting back on the horse - after so long being afraid of it it was totally worth it and I genuinely never thought I’d pass or do it, so I fully believe you can ❤
