Learning to drive #2

Hi 🥹

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I want to pass my test. I started learning in 2017 and after a horrifying driving test I have never attempted to drive again. The examiner was horrible. She kept making snarky comments when I’d make mistakes because I was nervous and was just overall a horrible person. It’s been a long time and I’ve definitely developed a phobia over learning again. I’ve been going to a hypnotherapist to deal with my anxiety and I’m improving 🥹 We’ve come to the conclusion that if I could start learning again and pass my test then I would have 100% beaten my anxiety and I genuinely think I’d be on top of the world

I wanted to join the thread to keep myself accountable for getting the ball rolling. First things first is passing my theory as it’s expired. Luckily I have 2 years left on my provisional license so I want to pass before the 2 years. If anyone has any tips or advice I’d be grateful!
Practice practice practice. Drive as much as you possibly can. I didn’t learn till I was 37 - combination of money and anxiety and laziness. I had only been driving a year or so and covid happened- really knocked my confidence as I spent months not driving anywhere. It takes me a good few mins now to settle in and I hate going somewhere new still. I always tell people if I could learn then anyone can. You can do this! Deep breaths x

Driving anxiety was a massive curveball for me to get over. I got into an accident on a driving lesson and it made me fearful of driving lessons and getting behind the wheel of the car. I luckily passed on my 3rd go when nerves/a bad examiner on my 2nd test (who really was horrible man as well, he called me too cautious, a nervous driver etc. Everything you don't want to hear) You've got this!!!

I passed my test, first time, and I'm so happy I don't have to have lessons any more as they were getting tedious - not to mention the drain on the bank balance!
I'm still a l nervy driver though. I hate reversing particularly, always feeling like I'm guessing at what's happening behind me.

I was like that but your confidence will grow!

I had a learner overtake me today...I was doing the speed limit!

Hi - new to this thread! Just need a bit of a vent really.

I've been learning automatic (admittedly with some gaps) for about a year and had a test booked for two weeks time. Had some lessons with a new instructor since September and have had such a regression, she said it is very unlikely I would pass the test. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and after todays lesson I've decided I'm just going to give it up, get my money back for the test and take a break. My plan is to pick it up in the new year when there aren't so many appointments and birthdays and I'm off work and not pregnant!

The last few lessons, I haven't slept beforehand and the emotional toll after just hasn't been worth it at all! Neither me or my husband drive, but we live in a small walkable town with good public transport, so think we will be fine with baby. Just needed to get this all off my chest as it's been weighing me down since I got back from the lesson. 🥴

I PASSED 🥳 been a couple of days now and I still can’t believe it.

Just wanted to say to anyone who is thinking about giving up - don’t do it!! Give yourself time even if it means moving your test date.

Sending hugs ... Do it in your own time, there's no rush. I've put mine off before now, have a new test in Dec but it's not the end of the world. I have had 2 kids without driving and not missed out xx

My test is today 🙃 I am glued to TikTok video tips 🤣
Eat a banana- genuinely releases happy endorphins. I had 2 before mine and I was the most nervous my instructor had ever seen. 😂 Deep breaths, you wouldn’t be in for a test if you were not ready. You can do this!

Thank you 🙏🏻 just my reverse around corner on my mind. Meeting my instructor an hour beforehand to get the nerves out the way!

Failed 😥

My driving was fine. The questions and Road signs were perfect. But the bloody reverse around the corner…I’d never done that particular one before and it was a very short reverse to the corner and I turned too much the first time. And when I went to correct mhaelf I genuinely lost all brain cells on what to do 🤣 be let me re do it and then I was doing it perfect but hesitated and over corrected. I eventually got around fine but then said at the end he had to give me the grace but I didn’t show competency overall.

I'm so sorry to hear that, you'll pass next time. Fingers crossed you're not waiting too long

Ah so sorry! Pesky nerves just kick in. Get rebooked and extra practice time. It took me 3 goes. I didn’t tell a soul on the final attempt. I had bananas, rescue remedy and made sure I had first test of the day so my nerves couldn’t build up too much. I say this a lot but if I can pass, anyone can x

I'm so sorry, I'm waiting on my second attempt in Dec and worrying already, my first attempt was back in March and I took some time off after as I get quite anxious. We will get there in the end I'm sure xx

Hi, I've got my test on Friday and I'm so anxious. For context I'm 41, took a test at 19 which was awful and haven't tried since until this year. I'm learning in an automatic as I have ADHD and possibly autism and struggle very much with spatial awareness and multi tasking so auto kind if takes a bit of pressure off. Genuinely can't remember being more terrified in my life. I l suffer hugely with anxiety anyway and have been given propanolol by the GP for the physical anxiety symptoms. Trying to rationalise it as I know I'm being silly and it doesn't really matter if I fail but can't seem to push past it. I've nearly cancelled several times. I have passed a mock test with my instructor with only a few minors so I don't know what's the matter with me. It doesn't help that I can't go out with a family member as we don't have the right sort of car. I just want to get it over with and I so want to pass. No point to this post really just wanted to get it out i suppose

Sending out a big hug, I'm also 41 and suffer with anxiety. We also didn't have the type of car to learn in but I was very lucky enough to buy my own just recently but it's not any easier as the bite point etc are in different places to the learner car 🤦🏼‍♀️
There's nothing extra I can say over the anxiety for friday but here if you need to chat. My friend passed recently 5th time so there's no rush or limit, it's just annoying isn't it xx

Thank you. It just feels like such a big hurdle to get over. I hope that even if I fail this one I'll feel better about future tests and they won't be so scary.

It's tomorrow morning 🫤 I think I've come through the other side a bit now though regarding anxiety. Can't remember how to drive though.
