Irish person here🙋‍♀️It is the custom here to have the coffin either at home or in the parish centre next to the church or the funeral home. The coffin tends to be open so everyone can view the body and pay their respects. This is done for ‘normal’ deaths. If it’s a young person it tends to be in the home house. Also bear in mind we bury/cremate three days after death and not two weeks like the UK. Funerals are attended by everyone and not just immediate family.
Apparently, it’s a very healthy way of dealing with death and getting closure, according to psychologists. We do weddings and funerals really, really well. But I know Irish funerals were a shock to my English cousins.
Hello from Scotland 👋, my Granny was my connection to Ireland and had a huge influence on me and my upbringing 🥰

Oversharing time so here's a weird story about death:
I remember when my Great Uncle died and they were all drinking, dancing and greeting in the living room.

I was a wee bit too young to fully understand what was going on, part of me thought he was sleeping. My own Uncle dared me to try and wake him, which obviously didn't work and he was laughing away 🫣.
My Dad and Uncle nearly fought there after 😂.
Dad took me aside and explained to me he wasn't asleep, I didn't get it and he told me to touch him and that's when I realised he felt like stone. My Dad assured me he was at peace and we were celebrating before saying goodbye.

After that, it didn't seem strange to me at all. I didn't realise until I was older than other people didn't do this before the body went into the church for the night.

It brought comfort to my friend's family when she died suddenly in her sleep in her early 20s 💔. I re-did her make up because the person at the funeral home had made her look ancient and I knew she would have been fuming for eternity 😂 I was reapplying it to her hands after people had held them too and moved her hair so you couldn't see her scars from the post-mortem.

I probably wouldn't have been able to cope with that if it wasn't for my Irish Granny

I’ve really tried to not judge his parents too much for how they’ve acted during this because everyone deals with things differently. But these people have been given 60k to look for their son and all they did was give a bit of money to TikTokers and fly a load of people for “support”. And now their son has been found, they need to fly the body home and organise a funeral, which won’t even be 30k, never mind 60k, and it’s still not enough for them? What are they actually planning on doing with this money? Perhaps they should be telling people their plan before asking for even more money

Did anyone see the tributes left by the family? This is proof that the funeral will be absolutely monstrous scenes none of us would want.

I would hope but have zero faith that any extras will go to a good cause

ETA: said tributes. Grief does weird and wonderful things to people but my parents would’ve left nothing rather than these and a gallon of water?! 🫠 different strokes for different folks, clearly
They’re a bit fucking late with the bottle of water

I know it’s different circumstances but my father is terminally ill with cancer. We thought we were going to lose him in January and we had to sit with the funeral directors and organise his funeral while he was still able to ask for what he wanted. It was extremely traumatic for us all as a family but he used the last of his savings to pay for it up front so we didn’t have to worry about it when he did pass away. It was £4,500 for a catholic funeral and burial with cars included.

He is thankfully still with us and fought the infections he had, but I know how much these things cost and £65k is more than enough to do what they need to.

Well put. So many decent people can't afford a good send off. Then you have the second coming of the Sir Tom Moore family wanting more cash for their wrong un on top of what idiots have already donated.

In stark contrast to the GFM page for Jack O’Sullivan who has been missing since the beginning of March 😔

It’s just pathetic, he’s somebody’s child so he was loved…but that doesn’t make him worth mourning by anyone else.

There’s a very rough family live near me. One son went to jail and was described by the judge as a ‘one man crime spree’, for a big list of offences committed on a single day, including violence, threats, criminal damage, theft of items and a motorbike. He died in jail because he had some kind of drug smuggled on on the ridge of envelope, licked it and had a reaction. The mother spent years blaming the prison service, has a very gaudy grave adorned with tat including teddy bears…and a substantial number of people regularly posted in his Facebook page after his death (where his profile photo has him smoking weed) saying he was basically a SAINT.

then, his ex-girlfriend…died of a drug overdose while her baby was asleep in the room…and she’s a SAINT. Then one of his brothers went to jail for a serious unprovoked assault on a stranger and the lawyer claimed he was traumatised due to his brother’s death to try to get a lower sentence. Then another brother went to jail for reasons unclear and that one also died in the jail, inquest pending. The mother also has younger kids from other relationships who routinely pose in front of the grave for Facebook photos and are encouraged to hero-worship him by the mother.

Some people just shouldn’t be having children. Jay may have just died in an unfortunate accident, but that doesn’t change that he was a despicable person whose only known achievement in life has been to avoid jail for a machete attack. The asking for more money only proves that. To get him home and a basic funeral won’t cost more than £10k, plus if saying they can’t afford it, the airlines or Spanish government may be able to help. That would just take it down to £3k or less for the uk side of it. If this extended family of his that went over to Tenerife have already spent the whole £60k on flights and hotels (which I doubt), then they can alway put some of these costs on credit cards, bank loans etc. split with between the family and it will be do-able even if they are on low incomes.

The mother is probably now wanting the full chav extravaganza funeral for the attention and a large tacky gravestone. Any decent person would keep use of the go fund me minimal and then donate the left-over to something like the Spanish search and rescue or a missing persons charity.

I worked in aviation for years, its extremely common.

I can't get my head round why the country is acting like he's a martyr and a massive loss to the world. He was a young lad who took drugs and died. He's not been at war ffs, he does not deserve this level of attention or fawning over
I saw this post on Facebook earlier...

Jay's death is tragic and sad but the way people have put him on a pedestal and made him some sort of role model and inspiration is so weird. I've seen comments from people who had never met him saying they have had sleepless nights over him and haven't stopped crying since he was found. I just don't understand it

His mum is an absolute chancer, and is 100% looking to make money off the back of all this.

the only update she gave during the search was about the gfm, and to request that it was shared. Never really mentioned her son. Nicest thing I’ve heard her say about him in that he’s ‘a good looking lad’

they reached 50 grand pretty quickly, you’d have thought that we’d see bigger movements in the search no that they had the funds to get people in to help if they wanted. But nope, the only movement was of the family of the people who were out in Tenerife so they could support them supporting her 🤯 would’ve been a bit more understandable if they’d even bothered their arses to attend the search - not necessarily to look for him, but to be around, give out water, put up posters. But nope, even that was too much effort.

he’s nothing special - he doesn’t deserve any grander of a send off than anyone else that’s died. There’s no pride in a funeral that has been funded by the gfm. It’s beggy. Pretty shameful really.

this whole thing has been a massive shitshow - and it’s all down to them.

Nah I'm sorry "send off he deserves" fuck off, thousands of people die every day, good, kind people who also deserve good send offs, their families don't beg to cover them and they certainly don't beg for £60,000+. The amount that has gone in to finding Jay versus other people who are arguably more deserving and they still want more? It's noble that charities like LBT don't care who you are and are willing to help anyway, but shaming people for very rightly taking issue with the GFM isn't OK.

Just replying to some comments on the last thread:

If his fall is anything like the one taken by some unfortunate people on a very steep sided Scottish mountain, I imagine his death would have been quick. Especially since he was not wearing a helmet like a mountaineer would. If you’re going to fall to your death, it’s merciful to smack your head quite quickly.

I truly don’t think he would have

No, just no
Holy shit has this woman no shame? I’m gutted for her that she’s lost her boy but Jesus Christ this is disgusting!
