Yeah, I think publishing it like this allows Arday to control what has been released rather than it being run through a university comms team.

The timing’s interesting, as it coincides with Cambridge announcing their investigation. So possibly they suggested he take some leave (I guess he’d have to be suspended anyway if there was an ongoing investigation), and he took a huff and resigned.
But yep, there’s no contrition there at all.

I think it will, though rather toothlessly, as Cambridge has to at least be seen to be attempting to preserve some element of integrity and reputation.

I would hope the investigation does continue, because they also have to look into how his appointment was approved. That’s down to the university. But I’m not sure how these things work.

I do wonder if he’s gearing up to sue, as having resigned he won’t have got a pay-off (and he may still have got a pay-off if he’d stayed til the investigation was completed). So maybe GLP are representing him.

Their success record is .. not exactly stellar.

That’s a good point. Maybe he resigned thinking this means the investigation won’t proceed. Because I suspect there is yet more to come in terms of stuff he’s lied about or exaggerated.

Don’t know where this leaves his publishers though. His autobiography is out next week in the US (and later this month in the UK). I wonder if they’ll pull it now.

I don't think they'll pull the book ~ no such thing as bad publicity, and the publishers will be desperate to make anything they can to mitigate their losses. 'The Salt Path' saw a sales boost after it was alleged to be bull, and I'll readily admit, I'm way more interested in reading his book now than I was before all of this kicked off!

It’s just incomprehensible to me. How can you build a career on an ever-escalating mountain of (easily disproven) lies, then set the police on anyone who questions you about it? How can anyone think that’s an infallible, sustainable, long-term strategy?

How can you live your whole life just waiting for the inevitable moment when it all falls apart? Because I know there’s an argument to be made that compulsive fantasists believe that their version of reality is the correct one, but using the police to deter enquiring minds suggests that he knew full well that his narrative would rapidly unravel once someone pulled at one of the loose ends.

Probably people were thinking he must be telling the truth, surely no one would tell such easily uncovered lies. Although there does appear to be some independent evidence on line that he was a Professor at Glasgow University, but not a visiting professor.

The resignation letter is a bit 'forgive them they know not what they do' so it looks like JA isn't learning or growing from this. And the whining about relentless public scrutiny and the constant spotlight is a bit rich when he has spent years running towards it.

Have any black academics spoken out about this, on either side?

“My understanding of English is improving daily,” a Latin-American academic is quoted in one of Arday’s papers. “Sometimes I struggle to articulate clearly and accurately what I would like to say to the healthcare professionals provided at university.”

There was just one issue. Three years prior, he had attributed the same quote to an Asian female undergraduate. It is one of numerous issues identified with his papers.

I'm not being funny but this also sounds like something my siblings and I, in jest, might claim our foreign mother said.
