I've been thinking about when he said, "to be honest I thought you'd just believe me" to the Guardian journalist, and actually I don't think it's unsophisticated at all.

It's a ridiculous thing for someone in his profession and of such a standing to say - academic work requires all manner of references, citations and sources. It's the sort of thing a naive (or guilty!) teenager would say - and that's why it makes perfect sense.

And when he went to the Guardian with his apparently fabricated stories about the pig’s head and the armed stalker at his faculty building, he *specifically* (and IMO cynically) approached a black journalist - almost certainly because he expected this journalist (being black) to swallow his version of events whole, without question. For “political” reasons or whatever. Because he knew very well that he had coasted through his “career” due to the failure of others to scrutinise, because to do so would be “racist”. Hence “I thought you’d just believe me”.

As it happens, this particular journalist did his job, i.e. the due diligence checks, as he should have. And his article was IMO the crucial one which marked the turning point.

Also, as an aside, this whole thing about expecting the viva to be some kind of easy ride pisses me off. Admittedly I went through this process a few years back but - no, it’s absolutely brutal. And that is what you are taught to expect, if you have had decent tutors. They challenge you at every tutorial, you have to defend your work at each tutorial almost like you’re in court. And if you believe in your work, you will do it, every time. And you will accept the knock backs because that is also part of the learning. At PhD level, you are expected to be contributing something new to the field, it’s not a tick-box exercise where you expect to be waved through. And it shouldn’t be IMO.

It's almost like he feared failing the viva so had excuses lined up. First the brain surgery and then the mini stroke. I assume neither medical issue is substantiated. He knew he was winging it.

I think it’s more telling when you learn that Arday himself contacted the Guardian journalist (as the G recently clarified to the grotesque Jolyon), rather than vice versa. He does seem in many ways to be lacking in sophistication-I mean, he comes across as a vacuous adolescent in his woeful memoir and in a lot of his dreadful ‘inspirational keynotes’, but he was also fully capable of seeking and getting multiple senior academic positions, of using his backstory in manipulative ways, of using lawyers and the police/weaponizing mental health and accusations of racism to intimidate multiple people who legitimately questioned him- and he was also capable of being incredibly manipulative beyond that. egView attachment 4105818

Within the "upper echelons" someone in a career which isn't boosted by lies and DEI initiatives and weaponising racism, someone might just be reaching that point at that age. At 37, Jason would have been the "new generation" for someone entering professorhood.

The brother seems to really care about his vocation, and while he's ambitious, there's substance to him. Not like JA.

It's sad that with 2 mental health nurses in the family JA still took the route he did.

I hate this attitude that only young people are wise and good, and old people are just ignorant and waste time. Real life isn't Hair.

Maybe that explains some of his crap, maybe he thought he only had to get away with it for a few short years.

Perhaps he hadn't thought ahead enough to presume he'd need one.

So many academics have done that, Simon Schama, Mary Beard etc, and I could just imagine him doing that.
I know this sounds a bit mad but I wonder if he copied his really long dreadlocks from Hamza Yassin from Countryfile?
Hamza was on Strictly in 2022 and it really upped his profile, it would be interesting to know if Arday got his really long dreadlocks after 2022?

Hamza always comes across as gently intelligent, curious, still fascinated by his field of study and warm. All things that Jason wasn't. My brother and his family know him slightly and apparently he is like this in real life, just a little more reserved. He chooses to live in a remote area of Scotland partly because he likes his privacy.

Found this in the Guardian and it has the ring of truth. Prolly posted already but confirms JA was full of tit.

Jonathan Stewart, 40, told the Guardian he remembered Arday from when they were children growing up in south London. He described him as a good mimic who entertained other pupils by putting on accents and singing songs.

Stewart, a YouTuber who says he was in the year below Arday at Heathbrook primary school in Nine Elms, south-west London, said the academic was known as the class clown. “He was always cracking jokes. He was the comedian guy, he would even put on voices,” claimed Stewart, who said he regularly attended church with Arday. Stewart said that in the Sunday school minibus that would pick them up, Arday would entertain his peers by singing the jingle from the 90s advert for Baby All Gone dolls.

Wasn't he the one who posted Tiktok videos before from his car talking about JA? The church bus is ringing a bell somewhere. Mostly because we walked to church but I'm also Catholic so it may be a denomination that has fewer locations.
