Just went to check the GFM to see if any funeral update has been given and seen this nugget ...

"As the scale of the fundraising grows, we are now potentially entering a new phase: looking beyond the immediate funeral and memorial costs towards how we can support Jason's dependants in the longer term and, at an appropriate time and in discussion with his family and their legal advisers, consider a permanent legacy that honours his life, work and contribution."

Just do a funeral , give the rest to any dependents, but just shut down the damn GFM now.

You know the wooden climbing frame things that were always against the wall pulled out when inspectors were visiting, if ever? Basically pointless occasionally causing some indirect harm.

Rename them that Arday climb.

Her reference to Digital lynching in her previous article apparently brought her some heat so she has talked about a right-wing racially motivated witch-hunt.

It feels like performative journalistic lamentation/ululation.

But to claim that Arday was unfairly singled out on account of his race is to ignore the very important other half of the ledger: He was elevated to an untenable position because of his race! You don’t need to take my word on that. Just read the very end of the Times of London’s contemporaneous article about his hiring, if you can stomach it:

Professor Hilary Cremin, head of the Faculty of Education at Cambridge, said hiring Arday was proof of the university’s commitment to tackling existing inequalities.

She told The Times: “Not only is Jason Arday a world-class scholar, he also brings a wealth of experience that can help us to take forward our efforts to widen participation at all levels.

“Hopefully it is becoming increasingly clear that with concerted effort and a genuine commitment to change, those barriers that still exist either to working or studying at top universities can be overcome.

“To any students or prospective colleagues who are wondering if Cambridge is a place where they can belong, the answer is, emphatically, yes.”

tit. I don't believe he was autistic (he at least lied about the diagnosis) but even if he was, people should not hold jobs where they don't know what's going on. Somehow, at some point, we've got lost in the idea that if anyone is unsuitable for a job due to disability, there must be a way around it. Accommodations must be made until this person can do this. But as someone who had to give up jobs I loved because of a disability, I know too well that disabilities are disabling and often you just can't do what you wish you could do. In many cases, there is no accommodation, because the disability precludes the very basis of the job.

Arday, and maybe the people who hired him, seemed to believe that his autism is like dyslexia, where he could do the cognitive load of the work if he had the information formated to him in a certain way. But some people can't do cognitive load and that's that. [Not due to autism, which can occur to very intelligent people as well], but while he is blaming his claimed autism, the fact is that with or without it, he can't manage the job. By his own admission. Autism can cause people to be confused if they are dealing with a lot of different tasks, but IMO Arday just wasn't clever enough to be a Cambridge Professor. Or even have a PhD.

Sometimes inclusivity isn't the right thing to do - no one should be employed to do a job that they don't even understand.

Crowd funding for almost anything is just absurd to me. I can't comprehend it. I've donated to one or two, for legal fees mostly for people fighting the sort of court cases that wouldn't exist if we didn't live in upside down land. I have a direct debit to two charities, both local youth/children and families homelessness outreach organisations, but random crowdfunders for things many of us have had to deal with (an unexpected death)... no.

Maybe I'm the head. I don't know.

'Fighting' for him to be placed in mainstream where he preceded to learn the sum total of nil, if he is to be believed. This is crazy to me, as a mum of an actually diagnosed autistic son, who would have done anything to get him a special placement, where he would have had far more hope of succeeding.

Exactly! My son is six, non verbal ASD, ADHD and learning disability and he would not have coped in a mainstream school. I’m extremely lucky he is at a SEN school but it would be utter madness to send him to mainstream where he would not have got the 1:1. And also why would I impose a child like mine on a teacher whose focus and training is not SEN? I can
only imagine the disruption he would have brought to the class and other kids.
I also think this part of JA’s story is bull but if it’s true then it was selfish and inconsiderate on Giffs part.

I hope what they mean by permanent legacy is to give funds to autistic charities. Unlikely but we shall see

I'm not laughing at you, just the idea that anyone with autism will see a shiny penny from this.

Exactly! My son is six, non verbal ASD, ADHD and learning disability and he would not have coped in a mainstream school. I’m extremely lucky he is at a SEN school but it would be utter madness to send him to mainstream where he would not have got the 1:1. One of my biggest issues with all of his tall tales is that he's ostensibly saying that people with autism and other disabilities are as valuable as anyone else (absolutely true!) but then saying the opposite - I'm special because I didn't need special education (doubtful if you left mainstream school unable to read or write), I'm special because I overcame my difficulties through sheer force of will! So what does that say about the kids who don't magically start speaking at 11? He and his supporters talk about rejecting heirarchies and all that while actively participating in and measuring themselves by those very heirarchies. It makes me furious!
