I think it's a feature of people who have the sort of psychological architecture where they have an unstable or none existent sense of self combined with a need for control.
I wonder if Arday did have some developmental delay/autism diagnosis/speech and language difficulties (not remotely to the extent he says), and these were a focus of his mother's attention, made into a defining part if his identity, and any indication of "overcoming" them was a reliable way to attract praise?
Sort of how people who fabricate ongoing serious illness might have been ill as a child discovered that illness and helplessness was a way to receive care and affection. Or people with munchausen's by proxy/factitious disorders often had babies in NICU and discovered that was a source of purpose/attention.

What an abominable, malicious accusation to make about a fellow journalist. Based on absolutely nothing, yet designed to rile up the very same media mob that Self pretends to be chastising in his "article".
I'm honestly shocked at how utterly appalingly people are behaving over this.
I do wonder what part his mother played in this debacle. I don't think she is responsible, Arday is an adult who made his own choices, but I wonder what part she played in creating him.
My fella has dreads.
He's white and Irish. They were done by a Ugandan woman when he visited for a couple of months about 15 years ago. He says the black people in the UK and Ireland who say anything at all about his hair generally compliment him. Nobody has seriously said anything about cultural appropriation, but those that have mentioned it, shocker, were white. He lived in a area of Manchester with a historically high black population when I met him and spent half his life on the reggae sound system scene, so very ethnically mixed. If anyone gave a tit there were no shortage of opportunities to let him know.
"Cultural appropriation" is another thing imported from America where natural hair has been a political issue for black people, especially women, who were told their natural hair was unprofessional etc. I've no doubt there have been elements of that in the UK, but like everything else we seem intent on importing American ideas of race and culture wholesale when our histories around race and racism completely different.
Yeah, the way he writes about her made me wonder. Like you say, I'm not blaming her for his behaviour as an adult, but all children have a predisposition to various personality traits.
If I imagine myself as the mother of a struggling child, I can understand the desire to be their cheerleader, fight for them and provide unconditional encouragement and praise.
But what might have been necessary encouragement to another child could manifest itself differently in someone with a personality less inclined to be moored to reality.
'Fighting' for him to be placed in mainstream where he preceded to learn the sum total of nil, if he is to be believed. This is crazy to me, as a mum of an actually diagnosed autistic son, who would have done anything to get him a special placement, where he would have had far more hope of succeeding.
I remember when Chris Morris received blowback from the celebrities he duped into appearing in his now infamous PDfiles Brass Eye episode, to promote an anti PDfile charity, 'pon-Sense'. Lol. Some of those celebrities, like Noel Edmunds, threatened to sue him.
The show was discussed in one of these Channel Four countdown of the best/worst TV shows filler programmes they used to do, where they got a bunch of talking heads to prattle on. Will Self was one of these people. He criticised these celebrities, saying they were duped because they didn't do their research properly, and because they were incredibly self serving and self seeking. Well, what is he doing now?!

I do admire the ability to become ever more clear and eloquent while on a righteous rant.
Brilliant. Especially this bit:

I should have said my local area is full of Rastafarians, hence my own experience has always been that not to get dreads but then we also get a lot of trustafarians around here so it may be tinged by that. These are the same people who'll be running away next week, because they can, whilst gnashing their teeth about the same thing that's been going for years. Long before daddy bought their house

He's definitely on the disgraced-academic-to-right-wing-pundit pipeline. There is money to be made grifting off racists for sure.
The dreads thing is ridiculous. I've never met a black person who gave a tit about white people having them, neither have I met any white person who resents idk, Asian or black people wearing blonde or red wigs. Its literally only ever Rik from the Young Ones white people talking about cultural appropriation, or chancers of all races. (To bring the topic back to Arday!

HE does indeed bring much more into the UK economy than is generally recognised (which is part of the problem that's led to the issues around the Jason Arday situation, IMV). I've also heard HE described as a 'soft power' for the UK internationally, but soft power needs to be handled carefully rather than being allowed to run unchecked.
