Taking inspiration from/reinterpreting/referencing/expanding upon previous works is not plagiarism.
Arday wasn't doing any of those things, he appears to have copied pretty long passages of someone else's work for his own allegedly original PhD dissertation, and also seems to have entirely fabricated research.
The knots people are tying themselves in are ridiculous.

I have a BA and an MA and it's drilled into students not to plagiarise and how to avoid it by citing and quoting correctly.
A First Year student might make genuine mistakes but once you get into the habit of it, it's not that difficult to cite correctly.
By PhD level it should be second nature, and there's just no excuse.
I can't understand how Liverpool John Moores stood by Arday's PhD once the plagiarism came to light, except I suppose it's embarrassing for them to admit they were wrong.
