I watched a YouTube video someone posted on here last night, where he is making a speech wearing a yellow top. What he said certainly lacked substance and he clearly wasn’t professor material but he was obviously a charismatic person and passionate about what he believed. He could have had success in an alternative way - as others have said. I find it really sad and I feel like he was set on this trajectory from a young age - of achieving the impossible. I would be interested to know what his parents’ narrative of his childhood was. Were his limitations exaggerated to make their success in advocating for him (and his later achievements)seem greater.
He would have made an excellent Big Brother’s Little Brother presenter.

Showing my age.

How many people using it have publicly "called out" or "exposed" someone else over some petty nonsense?
Look at all the articles on tattle influencers got printed with their connections last summer.

When its pretty benign compared to what is easily found on twitter, facebook, instagram or reddit.

People like Caroline Hirons lied to say tattle was all about death threats, that condom dipping bin bint lied to say NHS records are posted and that not a medical doctor Jessica Taylor lied to say tattlers were like child sex abusers.

I'd say all those articles on tattle were petty nonsense over a site that is a thorn in the side for influencers.

I’m sorry I totally missed this treasure of comment

I presume it’s sweat. Stress triggers, like lying your way into academia, makes you sweat.
As he wore eye make up I assumed it was the glass skin look that is currently popular.

Well I guess Dr Overton's students now know that they are not allowed and must never complain about him: during, after, or in perpetuity.
From what Roy Greenslade wrote about his dismissal from Newsnight over the Lord McAlpine accusations he sounded like a boozy loose cannon. He seems to have reinvented himself in academia. However a quick check of all the extraneous stuff he’s involved In these days with his focus on armed violence would suggest he’s not doing much how to write an intro in a tutorial for said students.

**chef’s kiss** ✌ < DJT salute for you!

On sabbaticals: we have to apply for them, and they typically depend on having a book deal or clear plan for journal publications, or a research grant submission. Otherwise there is indeed a pitiful allocation of time for ‘scholarship’. Oxbridge is admittedly slightly better than others in this regard. I’m not even sure Arday taught at Cambridge, so there’d have been nothing for him to be ‘released’ from through a sabbatical or funding, should he have bothered getting any.

On multiple institutions: this is increasingly common as doctoral graduates have to chase numerous post-docs while trying to secure a permanent (or longer term) lectureship or Fellowship. I don’t think Arday did a post-doc though; he seems to have walked into lectureships. I got my DPhil in 2018 and have worked at three HEIs (2 x post-doc; 1 x a. Prof, incl. technically three years’ mat leave). I’ve been lucky. But not as lucky as Arday - being terminated after a few days and whoosh! Straight into another role! Mere bumps in the road on the way to Cambridge.

On serious reflection of your post, I have highlighted this sentence because I find it curious. What was his REAL ambition?
Nothing is a humble brag. He’s not just good at academia, he’s a Cambridge professor. He doesn’t just excel in sport, he’s the level of an elite athlete. He doesn’t just raise a couple of hundred quid, he raises millions of pounds. He’s extraordinary in every way. Was his great ambition to be an academic or was he looking to get in the history books as a luminary?

I am a regular on the Meghan Markle (and Harry) thread, and I observe the same behaviour with her. There is no clear ambition but just a desire to be lauded and adored. She has her finger in lots of pies but doesn’t necessarily want to do the hard work involved in becoming great at something, she just wants the residual benefits from it. Really, she expected to be adored, be the new Queen, a fashion model, an Oscar winner, and to change the world, just by being her fabulous self. Nothing too outlandish.

My belief is strong that they both display/displayed narcissistic traits. HG Tudor is a YouTuber who does a good analysis of narcissism, and is a narsisstist himself:

H.G. Tudor’s framework on narcissism, the "prime aims" are the core objectives that drive every action, manipulation, and interaction a narcissist has with other people. The narcissist treats individuals as functional appliances necessary to secure four fundamental resources: control, fuel, character traits, and residual benefits. [1, 2]

The Four Prime Aims

    • Control: The absolute foundation. The narcissist's first law dictates that all people in their sphere must be brought and kept under control.
    • Fuel: The emotional reaction or supply extracted from another person through positive praise or negative upset.
    • Character Traits: The borrowing or absorbing of another person's skills, hobbies, or traits to enhance the narcissist's facade.
    • Residual Benefits: Practical perks like money, sex, social access, or professional status. [1]

Yeah, they call it looking "dewy," and I always laugh that these sad little trend chasers have been tricked into making their skin crazy greasy.

A large vigil is being held. For a pathological liar. Come on!

Just goes to show if you become a poster boy, all your wrongs will be washed away and you will be made a martyr.

Rest in Power? For what, lying all his life? Stealing positions from actually talented candidates? Profiting from lies?

I honestly thought he died. Must have confused him with another pompous pontificating a
He used to be on Radio 4 a lot. I really really hate his voice as well as his personality.

I once terrified my husband by shouting. 'Will Self? more like Will Self-centred bleep. Switch that tit off!"

These people NEED him to be vindicated in order for them to be RIGHT.

They are ALL narcissists.

So he appropriates a quote from Kafka and the suffering of Alfred Dreyfus, two men who were persecuted for being Jewish, and uses "Pharisees and Sadducees", referring to two ancient Jewish groups who are often demonised by antisemitic Christians, as an insult.

All while writing about how everybody else are the prejudiced ones. Hmmmm.
And it's irritated me so I looked it up. We're all accused of being Pharisees and Sadducees and 'passing by'. I presume he's referring to the parable of the Good Samaritan. Well clever clogs Self they weren't the ones who passed by. It was two Jewish men from other groups.

Approx £550,000 of public money is spent per day on inquiries. How about just investing in and strengthening standards at our universities for the benefit of our students and indirectly benefiting wider society - instead of throwing money Prince Harry style at lawyers to convince a judge to say “the media is bad!”
