Hello academics - would I be right that him ricocheting from job to job would normally be a bit of a red flag? All the academics I know have largely stayed in the same role for years or have moved max to another one or two unis.

I watched a YouTube video someone posted on here last night, where he is making a speech wearing a yellow top. What he said certainly lacked substance and he clearly wasn’t professor material but he was obviously a charismatic person and passionate about what he believed. He could have had success in an alternative way - as others have said. I find it really sad and I feel like he was set on this trajectory from a young age - of achieving the impossible. I would be interested to know what his parents’ narrative of his childhood was. Were his limitations exaggerated to make their success in advocating for him (and his later achievements)seem greater.
I'm only about halfway through so apologies if already discussed, but autistic people are more susceptible to connective tissue disorders that make our skin shiny - it shows up on my shins in particular and it's really weird.
Also someone mentioned that he had a narcissistic or dupers delight type of look in photos, I actually interpreted that when I saw photos of him as 'autism photo face' which is a thing some of us do in posed photos because we don't know what to do with our faces. It looks strange and fake because it is strange and fake and I can't speak for everyone, but as a child who grew up having "relax your face!" shouted at me when the Kodak got whipped out, I avoid being in photos as much as possible these days.
Of course sometimes you get someone like Jack Monroe who has obviously spent a lot of time

And there were a couple of academic jobs (mentioned in his book) that he only kept for a few days! That would raise major questions in any line of employment.

That kind of personality is perfect for the charity sector, getting funding and doing promotional stuff
It's grim how the story very quickly went towards blaming the media and that the media needs more controls.
No one should be jumping to any conclusions.
There was a lot happening including;
Review sites flooded with 1 star reviews.
Cambridge cutting ties.
Childhood friends starting to talk.
A trending topic on social media.
It's being used by the same old people to demand less press freedom. I've got no love for the media, look at all the flat out lies they have printed about tattle using the excuse it's what an influencer claims, but the last thing the world needs is a crackdown on the free press.
The book is currently number 17 on Amazon and will very possibly climb higher as the release date gets closer. The GoFund that started off with a goal of 20k for a funeral is not needed.

I resent that society at large is being told off for reading too much by the loudest in our society, for talking too long (two weeks) about someone who made an academic career (two decades) of talking about himself.

As a case study though, look at the process, the fanfare, the press release….for what is essentially a Cultural Studies Dr reviewing a YouTube Channel and interviewing participants.
he dragged his son out on a long walk a few years ago. Poor kid was exhausted to the point of tears when they rocked up to a college and Self attempted to blag his way in as a shortcut. The security guard, not unreasonably, called the police to report a safeguarding concern. I feel like this might be a watershed moment in hindsight, because it’s been leapt on by all sides and so few are saying ”wait a minute, this seems complex and not just a single issue”.

Was also awful to his second wife (Deborah Orr). To noone’s surprise.
Self is a massive twit but some of that piece was impressive and revealed a level of intelligence I didn’t know he possessed. Obviously he couldn’t help being himself at the same time.
