I go through alot of audiobooks at work to make the day go faster - this one absolutely did not make it go faster
I need to go back and read her old books, maybe they are crap too
I think I've mentioned that I listened to the girls audio books on YouTube recently (they were taken down around the time the sequel came out) I listened to them to go to sleep so wasn't paying that much attention I guess, but apart from weird turns of phrase I think they are well written. And her ability to put herself in the mind of a child is really amazing imo

PI started as on order, on order, on order, on hold for all the suburbs so obvs one lone Jackie fan in each, they’re all on shelf three weeks or so later

Just thinking I’m surprised Jacky didn’t go for Tracy Beaker as one of her first forays into adult literature? I’d say those are her most popular books with the best known TV series. I guess there are quite a lot of books including my mum Tracy beaker, but I think that was aimed at kids
Can you imagine the uproar when she inevitably gets basic details wrong? Might not be worth the risk
I’m absolutely sure she answered this in one of the Cosmo podcasts (the one with Dani Harmer as the guest) and said it would feel weird writing as adult Tracy because ‘Tracy wouldn’t like it’ or something, so sounds like she has no plans to. I’m 99% sure I’ve not made all of that up anyway!
She said she didn't want to write about Tracy's sex life. I'm not sure why she thinks adult books must have sex scenes. Her books would be better without them.

It sounds like Jackie has so many ideas flying round in her head she gets a bit dreamy and doesn't remember where they came from rather than being malicious The fact it seems to have happened many years later isn't a coincidence

My honest opinion is that JW's story and character creation is so simple, and one-themed, and 'samey' - that it's actually impossible to not plagiarise if you're also writing/creating within that existing space. You can pretty much summarise all of JW's most memorable and known works with the following recipe:
Take a young girl with a quirky name who is slightly plump with mousy brown hair and likes colouring, victorian scrapbooking, doesn't know a lot about pop/modern culture. She has a scatterbrained-but-loveable mum and either an absent or mean father. She has a rich and also quirky aunt who helps out towards the end of the book. The entire family struggles with money in some way and the action tends to start with an illness or abuse that disrupts the 'normal' lifestyle.
That's pretty much Cookie, Lola Rose, The Illustrated Mum, Diamond Girls, Vicky Angel, Dustbin Baby, The Lottie Project... it's all 'domestic drama' in some way or form.
And I think any of us could follow that template and come up with a JW-esque plot. My own daughter did obsessively and I'd take her to JW signings and she too would bring her own stories. I'm sure if we still had copies of them, we could pick identical elements in JW's newer books... I just wouldn't call it plagiarism or stealing. There's only so many 'plots' within this style of writing to actually cover.
