I think the main reason it seems cruel to me is the way they’ve done it. If they’re getting blowback then that’s on them for not doing due diligence, there’s no need to do a poll and basically encourage people to pile on Jack knowing she’ll be tagged in the replies. If they wanted feedback from their audience, they could have published an article asking if people agreed with it with moderated comments (or asking for emailed feedback). Most of the people who pile on on Twitter will not be the grocers target audience at all.It does seem bizarre and certainly poorly executed but tbh I don’t agree with others that it’s mean and cruel. Or at least I interpreted it differently. We have to remember that the Grocers loyalty is to their subscribers and advertisers, not to Jack Monroe. If they’ve had major blowback from a lot of subscribers or advertisers for choosing JM, then it’s not a bad move to seek feedback on a public forum, although I concede that a Twitter poll isn’t a great way of doing it.
Maybe they’ve caught the ShootMyselfInTheFootVia TwitterPoll virus from Elon.
It’s encouraging a pile on the same way she does, and while there’s an element of her reaping what she sows, I think it’s cruel when she does it to other people and so I think it’s cruel when it’s done to her too.
