amazing that a recipe written specifically to engage children includes the words non-organic, pesticides, fertiliser and besan flour

Does anyone really have any sweets containing hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and toffee left over? Would be more realistic if she showed us what to do with the strawberry and orange creams. 😆
I have toffees left over, I’m eating the strawberry and orange creams 😋

Greetings cabal!
Sorry I haven't been keeping up with these threads because they move so fast on account of how much there is to discuss re: slopmaster general Jack Monroe.
But last night I attended a virtual Christmas party and the conversation somehow ended up on the concept of homemade baked beans. I then had to share with the group the horror that I had experienced when I saw JM's recipe for "homemade" baked beans which involved buying a can of beans specifically to rinse off the sauce and then making a sauce to serve them with. (That was the very moment when I lost faith in Jack as cook and as a spokesperson about poverty because the whole idea was just ??!???!)

The shock with which my news was received meant I had to check back in here to confirm that JM is known for this sort of thing, and that it wasn't all part of some sort of horrifying fever dream I'd had.

I must try harder to keep up with the thread now, to avoid accidentally gaslighting myself again in future 😂

Thread title nomination #231: Unfortunately, none of this is a fever dream

Nice to see beans get a mention in the rocky road recipe. Btw, please don't try crushing biscuits with a squash bottle especially if there's anything liquid in it as it won't work very well at all.

Why blue cheese in the soup? Maybe these are different children to normal as most of the ones I've know don't like blue cheese.

What if the squash bottle is full up with 9 types of spendy essential oils lightly diluted?

I haven’t been on a weaning course in god knows how long but I’m sure blue cheese, as well as something to be careful about in pregnancy, is also to be avoided until children are bigger. I know this is aimed at older children but there should be a warning about it as big kids have smaller siblings.

of course it’s perfectly safe as no kid will ever eat it…

Most adults I know don't. 😂 It's an acquired taste cheese. They like all the other fancy cheeses but the stilton is left on the cheeseboard.

They can’t even have Brie, anything you couldn’t have when pregnant (goats cheese, honey, mcflurries/soft serve ice cream etc) is not safe for kids to eat until they’re older because of the risk of listeria.

I love cheese, but as a fully fledged adult I still haven't braved putting blue cheese into my mouth. One day, but not today, and absolutely not with a Jack Monroe recipe 😆
I don't think a Jack Monroe recipe should be anyone's first experience of any food. It'll surely put you off for life

Granted I have taste buds of a five year old but I’m 29 and if someone offered me blue cheese soup and veg peeling falafels for dinner I’d politely decline never mind a child that will probably just want to demolish their selection box.

It does appear to have been proofread by a child though so at least they're getting involved that way
