I’m amused by all the “ways to enjoy Harry Potter without financially supporting JK Rowling” stuff that seems to be going round social media atm with lists of things like only buying the books second hand, not buying official merchandise, not visiting any of the Harry Potter tourist places. I would LOVE to know how those fans who make HP their entire identity are going to reconcile that with their desire to be seen as woke and avoid giving JK their money 😂😂😂
this is one of my favourite things about this whole issue!

No offense meant to any HP fans but I have a particular loathing for the intensity of some of the HP fandom and how they make it their entire personality. It just REALLY cracks me up to think some of them have lost half their existence (saddos) because the woman who created the whole thing has some (biologically factual and thoroughly sensible) views they don’t agree with!

My son is trans (FTM) and thankfully we've not really had any huge hiccups in terms of his acceptance. His friends are great, our family are great. His bio dad... not so great, but he's not in his life anyway. He finds it hard that there are some 'activists' out there that ARE taking it too far. He couldn't give a rats ass about a lot of the issues being brought up by these people. The phrase 'women menstrate' doesn't bother HIM but he says he knows others that it does bother. but he thinks there's bigger fish to try.

Anyway re: the bathrooms. He looks like a boy, but he does opt for unisex bathrooms if there is one. If not, he will go to the women's bathroom because he worries what people would say if he uses the mens. Personally I don't think anyone would even notice but it's his choice. He'll go in the mens if he's with his brothers but otherwise he goes in the female. It doesn't bother him that much right now if he really needs the bathroom, but he usually tries to avoid going in public to save the hassle of trying to decide. Does he go into the male and risk people calling him out for not being a cismale? Or does he go into the female and risk being called a boy?

I think unisex bathrooms are a useful solution for that dilemma (alongside a female/male bathroom, not instead of) but I also don't really personally see the issue with letting transwomen use female bathrooms, and vice versa. But obviously I have factors that could make that opinion biased.
This is really informative and insightful, and thanks for not being automatically agressive towards people who aren't informed enough perhaps. You're a peach.

This is just a nightmare. How are companies getting away with firing/ disciplining employees for personal beliefs? Is it in their company handbooks that people should not believe a certain thing?

I remember that guardian blind date thing. I felt so bad for that woman she got lynched simply for not being attracted or interested in going on another date with someone, which is surely someone we are all allowed to do? One date doesn’t automatically mean there will be a second!

Yes you're right and i certainly wasn't saying that eating disorders aren't real. Sadly kids do succumb easily to peer group pressure so if they see other kids starving themselves to be thin it can start them off on the slippery slope to developing an eating disorder.

I believe that is what's going on now with the gender identity crisis. Some (not all of course) are being influenced by seeing others do it and if they are confused, they think that perhaps they should change sex too.
This was actually a thing online a few years back when I was late teens/early 20s, where people would make accounts on Tumblr and other SM sites promoting eating disorders and malnourished bodies. They would post “progress” pictures of their weight loss, akin to the ones people on diets like SW and WW would do. They called it “thinspiration.”

Er what? ...... these sites wouldn't even exist without JK's writing. Unbelievable hypocrisy.
Here's their ridiculous statement. 😡
What a load of twaddle. Used to follow these pages on Facebook as they were quite fun until JKR had the audacity to speak up and they became insufferable with their complete lack of understanding of the situation.
I would instruct my lawyers to take the sites down for breaching copyright but of course it would just be spun as “mean JK Rowling targets innocent fans” but you know what? At this point I think she should say “fuck it” and do it anyway. I would. There are still official sites for the fans to visit and if former fans can’t bear to go on the official sites then they can STFU and go find a new hobby or fandom to join.
I’m no expert on law but I’d look into doing that if I were JKR and wouldn’t even care about how it’s spun. Fuck them using her intellectual property for content on their site, possibly profiting off of it as well, whilst refusing to acknowledge the person who created it all. The cheek of it. Harry Potter is hers and always will be.

Germaine Greer said something along the lines of a man my identify as a woman, may have medical preceedures but can never truly be a woman which is a lot more blunt than anything JKR said but didn't get the same flack. I believe JKR thinks she's defending womanhood and to a degree I can understand what she means, there is a fundamental difference between being born a woman or a man and identifying as another gender and with an ever growing list of gender identities things are getting a little foggy to say the least for most people.

Bottom line is she has her opinion as do we all and should be free to express them and remember education on a subject does not always mean acceptance of that subject.
Germaine Greer has had a lot of grief thrown at her over the years but she has kept relatively quiet recently, probably due to her age (81) and the fact that she has already stated her opinions on numerous occasions.
She's too smart to spend her life arguing pointlessly on social media with people like that Fallon Fox.

Hatchette (publisher) have told their writers that (paraphrasing) 'they would never want to force them to work on something they were uncomfortable with, BUT.... we wont change who we are publishing because of a protest'

I am fucking fuming. There's a debate on Facebook about JKR and someone said they can still enjoy Harry Potter because they can separate the art from the artist, in the same way that they still like Roman Polanski's films. How is JK defending women in any way comparable to Polanski? I am seriously fed up. Oh and of course this was from a straight man who is blissfully unaware of the nuances of this debate. I know because he told me a few weeks back he didn't really know enough about it
I have had enough of trying to even debate it while trying to use words that might cause offence. I really don’t care anymore who I hurt with my words. It’s getting beyond a joke. The more I read the angrier I get.

Hang on though, why is middle aged woman (which is exactly what these people are) a term of abuse but “trans woman” as we discussed earlier isn’t?
I understand the sentiment of it being “you’re “just a middle aged woman, pipe down” butI do think we should either be OK for everyone to be addressed as they are or no one.
As said earlier I disagree with throwing the terms Karen and Gammon around but I’m confused as to why “middle aged woman” is abusive.
Because the implication is that age makes the person making the argument invalid.

Age is irrelevant, so no need to use it unless to denigrate.

Also can you clarify what you mean by “these people?” What people?

I can't even look beyond the use of narrow-minded given that you and everyone else in this thread is the epitome of it. I am a lesbian with trauma from rape and while I absolutely agree that not every person is going to be equipped to wax some balls or whatever else it might be, I can also recognise that it's a fairly... ridiculous argument to fight against trans rights and the existence of trans people. And that is where my issue lies. Because there is always a loophole with you guys, a reason why trans people shouldn't get to exist peacefully for the sake of the comfort of a few bigots who grasp at straws and pick out potential isolated incidents that could happen with cis men, etc.

Yaniv is an isolated incident that this thread is using to tar the entire trans community with. My own sexual trauma would never allow me to be with someone who has a penis - and aside from that, I am not attracted to them. I know that may upset some trans people; I know that will have me be painted a certain way by some, but that doesn't stop me from caring about trans people being afforded the same rights and respect as everyone else because I care deeply about making sure these people are helped, understood and protected from the horrible statistics that sit heavy in their existence.
Still waiting for a response to my question below:

Its women like us who are fighting to protect women like you from further trauma! The trans lobby have vilified lesbians and argued that they are inhumane for not sleeping with trans women. You say you wouldn't be able to sleep with a teams woman, surely you can understand the anger from lesbians who are being told they are homophobic for rejecting penis? And just like you don't want to sleep with a trans woman due to previous trauma, I don't want to share toilet with a trans woman due to previous trauma. Why is your trauma valid and mine bigotry?

I'm sorry about the late post, but did one of you say that Emma Watson posted to J.K Rowling that she was sexually assaulted at the age of 20?
If that is the truth I find that very disingenuous, she worked with Weinstein on the film 'My week with Marilyn." She was in her early 20s at that stage, right after the last Potter film, Deathy Hallows 2.

And when news broke out a couple years ago she pretended like she didn't know anything. Saying that she stands with the victims.
.... If she's only coming out with this now for sympathy points, I find that really disgusting. She's been given so many times to speak out about her experience. Why does she finally decide to speak up now and not when everyone was on the #timesup #metoo movement?
And if it's true I'm not trying to deny her experience. I have no right to deny anyone's experience.

I also find it ridiculous that she and her fellow Potter cast, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have come out of the wood work to bash on Rowling publicly. Without her they wouldn't have gotten their start, you don't bite the hand that feeds you. How does that make you look better, if anything it makes them look alot worse.

-A hospital will not be considered transphobic based on a patients assessment of the member of staff in question. The action is committed by the patient, not other hospital staff.
-being comfortable saying no is a societal issue and not born of the trans movement. That’s not going to change until white middle aged men are no longer in charge of the conversation and the majority of our infrastructure. I don’t think I’m telling you something you don’t already know as you’re already on the feminism movement but the very design of female oppression is to give us or make us feel like we gave no choice so we aren’t aware of our rights to say no.
I completely get what you’re saying, but I think the point is that if a female patient asks for a female chaperone, and that female chaperone happens to be a transgender woman because now many people believe “transwomen are women”, then what happens if the female patient is uncomfortable? If they say “no, a biological woman” than some people feel this is transphobic, so will they be told so? Will they be told “I am a biological woman” by the transwoman? Does the right of the female patient to a female chaperone override transgender ideology? It’s such a contentious area.

I’m sure this exact thing happened a couple of years ago - does it ring any bells to anyone? Maybe a smear test? The woman left without having the procedure done I think, but was labelled transphobic on social media etc. I can’t remember enough details to find a link! Agh!

Tori Barron's response is ridiculous. "But Joanne, us trans folk are just sitting here. You picked this hill to fight on." Just sitting here, eh. Not doxing people, threatening women with rape, etc etc. Of course, not all trans people. But a good enough number to give the whole movement a bad name. Why doesn't Stonewall or Mermaids speak out against them?

It’s all virtue signalling anyway. They will still buy the books and the merchandise and visit the attractions. They just won’t be vocal about it on social media. Everyone knows that if you don’t post something on SM then it didn’t really happen, right??

I bet many of the people posting stuff like that are kids/teens who wouldn’t say no if their parents took them to the studios or to universal in Florida, or if someone gifted them some HP merch for Xmas would they really turn around and go “ewww this is official merch how dare you”. It’s laughable when you think about it.
