I'm sort of curious as to why people always ask for private messaging on Tattle. That said, I only post on a handful of mostly influencer and TV threads where I would have no need that I can think of to send a private message.

I've been a moderator on a forum with private messaging before and have seen that it's often pretty difficult to retain anonymity once it gets involved- people will often use the function to share their real names, social media profiles etc. Maybe anonymity isn't important to everyone but I am sort of curious as to what else people would use it for.

I'm confused, don't people have private messages back? I can see the envelope icon in the top bar next to my username so I assume that's the private message function..?

I've always had that envelope ever since I joined the site. I thought everyone had it. I've never used it and just thought the function wasn't available as people often ask for private messaging on here.

It's often because people start liking each other on these forums and form a sort of friendship and want to continue their new online friendship in a more real life / off the forum kind of way, which I think is lovely. Or sometimes people ask for help/advice and someone wants to give it, but doesn't want to share their whole story so publicly but wouldn't mind helping out more privately. I can see why people want to private message someone and in many ways it's really lovely and nice, but it has also has a different side. It both has a lot of benefits but when you sign up for Tattle you know this is anonymous (well unless you out yourself) and not an option, you signed up for it

Edit to add: I don't have the envelop!

Ahh OK. Yeah, I've just gone into the icon and can see there's no way of adding someone or starting a private message.

Omg did we ever get a write up on what exactly went on there? The only encounters I had with her/him was her boasting about a swimming pool and calling some women old?

Thanks for this! It does make sense that people might like to offer advice and share stories more privately. I don't frequent those forums so didn't really think of that.

My past experience with private messaging is that it usually leads to the end of anonymity on forums (can have pros and cons) The forum I was on was music related and private messaging sort of killed the forum (haha!) as a lot of people eventually got to know each other irl/meeting up at gigs etc. It was a much smaller forum than Tattle though.

I built up a few friendships on another forum before (where we shared names etc via messaging), admittedly it was about 15 years ago when we were all merrily adding everyone and anyone to our social media, and our friendships developed more on there as most of us eventually stopped using the forum.

I'm probably slightly more circumspect now - having subsequently suffered some online harassment on my social media from multiple fake accounts - so would be very wary of sharing my details even by message.

(I do have a couple of friends who are Tattlers (we all discovered the site around the same time) however I don't know their usernames & vice versa 😂 If they have identified me from my posts they are keeping it quiet!

I also don't have an envelope, so couldn't message anyone even if I wanted to...

I feel like they should be given honorary invite codes for doing the Lord’s work and being as missionaries in an uncivilised land.
