I see Champagne socialists as hypocrites - preaching one thing and doing another.

He was a Labour MP for a while, then an independent, but hasn't been an MP for quite a few years I think.

And yes, apparently that's valid use of the term, who knew! I have no idea how 'credible' a socialist IK is (she definitely has a Tory vibe to me but I have no idea), I just don't object to her being a socialist who lives in a big house with a meadow and an expensive mattress.

I think it's so much easier to preach socialism when you have no need at all to depend on the State. I have noticed this recently as a trend - my richest friends enjoy showing off their left-leaning creds from the safety of their large houses filled with privately educated children.

She was awful on Brexit. Couldn’t wait to tell working class people how racist and thick they are. Didn’t seem to have any idea that she might have been shielded from any negative effects of globalisation/immigration in a way that other communities haven’t. Totally tone-deaf. It’s a shame because if someone like her could discuss rationally and explain her POV she could have persuaded some people - but that nasty streak meant she had to go for the cheap shot.

We all depend on the state in countless ways though, including rich people who send their kids to private schools (even if some wouldn't like to admit it). I'm not sure why it's easier for them than less wealthy people to preach socialism?

I only have passing knowledge of EJ from recent news articles, and IK recently deleted all her tweets so I have no idea of how left wing they were. All I really know of her is that she's a Sunday Times columnist (doesn't scream left wing) and opposed Scottish independence.

I thought it was just a discussion, not an argument; I picked up on the term "champagne socialist" because it's a term I don't agree with, but appreciate that it can also be used to describe fake socialists - I was just curious as to what made IK a fake socialist, because I'm not familiar enough with her output, and I don't think living in a big house qualifies her.
