Many of the people in Florida are piss-poor. I know we're used to seeing these big villas and boats and all these Tiktoks of people boarding up their lovely houses, but this isn't the reality for many. I went on a trip few years back which involved visiting some of the smaller towns and they really have nothing. I hate to think that those people are going to lose the small amount that they do have and I hope there is support for them afterwards, but I fear there won't be.

Yep, and infrastructure is just crap, the buildings are like cardboard. Hurricane Katrina wasn't even the worst hurricane to hit the US (think it ranks #7) but it had such an impact because it hit another poorer region where the buildings and homes are equally crap.

I saw on the Englewood camera two guys walking into the sea to take pictures, the wave hit him in the chest. What is wrong with these people

The space photos are absolutely terrifying.

So many in evac zones are staying put but there hasn't been a storm of this magnitude hit for a long time, most buildings aren't up to spec. They really aren't fucking about when they say those in evac zones leave or die, it could weaken or change direction but it's not worth the risk.

If you know anyone planning to stay in an evac zone then do forward them 1-800-729-3413 - they are still picking people up and taking to a shelter. Nothing is worth risking your life for. Just going in state 30kms in a modern build should be safe.

My daughter is currently on holiday in Florida with friends, staying at the All Star Music hotel. I'm so worried for them, they haven't been told to evacuate, I'm not sure where they would go even if they had to as they have no car etc.

Does anyone know the area at all? I have no idea where they are in relation to where Milton is going to hit.

To be honest I wouldn't worry about Disney, it's so far inland and even if it defies the laws of physics and builds up and takes a direct hit they'll have people in buildings that are up to spec.

None of orange is under an evac order. Not everyone in FL needs to worry, but those in an evac zone or in a building that isn't up to hurricane spec need to take it seriously.

I’ve just seen this on TikTok! Absolutely ridiculous! I was in Ireland during Hurricane Ophelia and some woman called into the radio saying that there were people at the beach walking their dogs, she was also doing the same!

Disney is the ideal place to be, rather than being alone in a rental villa, for example. Sounds like they have prepared, hopefully they have card games and things to entertain themselves and they just need to follow instructions from reps and stay inside and away from windows. I know you will still worry, but they are probably in one of the safest places they can be.

Do you know what the program was called? I think there is one called "when the levees break" although I am not sure if it is solely about the prison. It really sounds horrendous what they went through.

I keep seeing people commenting about "hurricane Kirk" whilst the UK does get some awful devastating weather, it really is nothing compared to what the US get.

When the Levees Broke is a great documentary and it's uploaded to Youtube in two parts. It came out a year after Katrina but I only saw it recently, and it was astonishing how much I had no idea about because it wasn't reported on the news.

I'm fixated on Milton at the moment. I echo everyone else's thoughts, it makes me so sad thinking about the animals and families who haven't evacuated. For some it's not that they've chosen to stay but they genuinely might not have the means to leave be it money, transport, community help, etc. They are being left for dead. How terrifying
