I’ve been following this.
I’m glad my parents no longer live in Florida (or the US at all) and I feel for everyone there. Most people there can no longer afford house insurance, not the ones that cover hurricane damage anyway. Many people will lose everything.

Makes you think what the hell did people do before there were accurate storm predictions? They'd have so little warning. No time to prepare or evacuate.
They had footage on the news of the team actually flying into the hurricane to get information about it. Very scary and brave.

The guy on the boat has apparently left and gone to shelter. Sensible choice
I think he was forced to leave by the police for safety reasons. He was adamant God wanted him there unfortunately for him I think he would have met God if he hadn’t been forced out of the boat.

she seems like a fairly normal sensible person...paediatric ER doctor currently holed up in local hospital with her kids
I really like this lady. I was watching her through helene. I’ve seen tampa hospital (not sure if that’s what it’s called) has big flood defence fences up around it. If there’s going to be storm surges of up to 15 feet it won’t hold 😢. It really is such a sad situation

My dogs would be left to fend for themselves during a hurricane over my dead body.

It seems that the loyalty our pets give us isn’t reciprocated by a lot of people.

I was watching a tik tok of a lady with a homestead and she's got loads of animals she's looked after and rescued. She's not in an evacuation zone (shes somewhere near tampa) -but she says her husband has lived there all his life and this is the hurricane that's got him real scared. They aren't leaving because she says her animals are her children. She can't put them in a barn because it's so dangerous in case it collapses. So she has to bring the smaller animals (chickens, dogs, cats, small cows) inside her home- but leave her horses outside. She said 'imagine leaving your children outside?' And it honestly just broke me. She seems in complete despair, she knows she's not in the direct line but she knows it will be bad and it's just crushed her. Her tik tok doesn't seem like the normal attention seeking tik tok- she seems genuinely heartbroken and scared for her animals which are her life. She's just asking for prayers bless her.
Utterly heartbreaking x
No this has got me bawling 😭😭😭 praying those horses make it through 💔💔💔

My daughter is currently on holiday in Florida with friends, staying at the All Star Music hotel. I'm so worried for them, they haven't been told to evacuate, I'm not sure where they would go even if they had to as they have no car etc.

Does anyone know the area at all? I have no idea where they are in relation to where Milton is going to hit.
Hi, Disney is a good place to be. The cast members will look after them. They should make sure they have plenty of food and water in their room as they won’t be able to leave for a while, and make sure they charge all their devices in case they lose power. Orlando is in the path of the hurricane but far enough in land that storm surge shouldn’t be an issue. The Disney resorts will be full so plenty of people around to support them if needed.

I’m dreading looking on TikTok in the morning. I’m a terrible sleeper so I’ll be up all night worrying. I really hope it isn’t as bad as expected. These poor people must be terrified

it’s awful (and they’ve had no time to even think about recovering from helene too). i can’t even imagine :(

the image of the hurricane from space (currently on bbc’s homepage) is terrifying, the sheer size of it.

I can not stop thinking about the animals. I know human life is important too but humans have the chance to leave, prepare themselves as best as they can etc whereas animals have no clue and so many just left to fend for themselves. on Tiktok nearly ever video that contains an animal with a family fleeing before the hurricane hits has people commenting ''thank you for taking your fur baby!'' wtf?? I could never ever imagine leaving my pets behind - if they couldn't come then I wouldn't be going full stop.

atm I've been looking at the Naples pier webcam and can't believe people are surfing! I don't know how badly this area might be affected but I couldn't imagine just taking myself to the beach for a surf when a hurricane is on its way. Earlier on there were families on the beach with young kids. I just really hope these people have somewhere safe to go to

This loon's been there for the past ten mins (was waving at the camera at one point), tide is coming in too:

There are lots of British families here who couldn’t go home. We’re currently at Disney World because we couldn’t get a flight out and my family that is local to Saint Petersburg is here having evacuated. I figure it’s better we just stay here. I’m really concerned for the coastal communities.

I’ve followed @oursimplehomestead and I’m not sure I’ve done in the right thing in doing that 😭 I know I’m going to be glued to the news tomorrow hoping that they get through it all okay.

I can't even grasp a storm surge of 10-15ft, that is devastating. My heart is breaking for the animals
Same here, they must be so frightened. I live in a moderate-to-high risk bushfire area and I dread every summer, thinking about all the poor animals. At least a fire can usually be contained but this storm is an actual monster of a thing.

It's giving me the chills watching the webcams. I can't even comprehend how scary this is going to be. I keep thinking of all the elderly, the animals and vulnerable people who can't get out and who wouldn't know how to protect themselves. I was watching a video on you tube of Hurricane Helene, it was showing a little town and their attempts at clearing up after it hit- it was showing how the locals all came together to try and get aid and supplies to the vulnerable. It was so wonderful to see all these people come together and just support each other. The spirit and tenacity of Americans always impresses me.
But what was so heartbreaking is that one house had found 8 bodies that had washed up in their front yard. Can you imagine?
The trauma that some people will go through in the next few hours is going to be devastating. My love, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who will be caught up in this.
God bless them x

Whenever these storms hit, it always reminds me of how badly and flimsily built American houses are. Of course Hurricane Milton was a ferocious force of nature that was always going to cause extensive damage but it doesn't change the fact that homes are built to a terrible standard

I'm putting this as a spoiler as it is about animals in Helene.

I saw a TikTok of a wedding venue that had horses, goats and donkeys. The venue told people they were leaving and to leave the animals there. The fields were probably a good 4-5ft deep with water and some guests at the venue took it upon themselves to free the animals. They did manage to get the animals out on to non flooded ground but sadly a donkey didn't make it.

Days later, the staff/venue owners returned and saw the animals on higher ground acting all glad as if they had freed and saved the animals themselves.

The least they could have done is open the gates so the animals could have found higher ground. Thank god for those guests

He received a live ban earlier while I was watching. I had the volume right down so didn't hear anything but comments suggested he'd used the N-word just before the live was discontinued.
