This is petrifying to watch. And as a horse owner, seeing horses have air tags attached to them or phone numbers painted on them and being set loose for their best chance of survival, seriously breaks my heart 💔 And I'm seeing that people can't get out because the highways are rammed and there's no gas. Honestly terrifying. My thoughts and prayers go out to anybody affected 🙏

Same. I would be heartbroken if I couldn’t take them with me, I wouldn’t be able to leave. I saw someone who had 2 horses and a mini, they put the mini in their back seats as they said there was no way they were leaving anyone behind.
I hope it gets downgraded before it hits Florida and isn’t as bad as expected 🤞🏼

I couldn't leave mine. Either she comes with me or I stay there with her and what will be will be 💔

It is terrifying. I couldn’t imagine having to make the decisions some people are having to make at the moment.

Are there any sensible TikTok / insta accounts about it? All I can find are nonsense claiming the storm has already hit or AI stuff.

Some of these guys remind me of that old dude who wouldn't leave his house before Mt St Helens erupted

I really like this lady. I was watching her through helene. I’ve seen tampa hospital (not sure if that’s what it’s called) has big flood defence fences up around it. If there’s going to be storm surges of up to 15 feet it won’t hold 😢. It really is such a sad situation

I can't even grasp a storm surge of 10-15ft, that is devastating. My heart is breaking for the animals

Same here, they must be so frightened. I live in a moderate-to-high risk bushfire area and I dread every summer, thinking about all the poor animals. At least a fire can usually be contained but this storm is an actual monster of a thing.

It's giving me the chills watching the webcams. I can't even comprehend how scary this is going to be. I keep thinking of all the elderly, the animals and vulnerable people who can't get out and who wouldn't know how to protect themselves. I was watching a video on you tube of Hurricane Helene, it was showing a little town and their attempts at clearing up after it hit- it was showing how the locals all came together to try and get aid and supplies to the vulnerable. It was so wonderful to see all these people come together and just support each other. The spirit and tenacity of Americans always impresses me.
But what was so heartbreaking is that one house had found 8 bodies that had washed up in their front yard. Can you imagine?
The trauma that some people will go through in the next few hours is going to be devastating. My love, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who will be caught up in this.
God bless them x

It's absolutely heart breaking.

Chimney Rock was totally destroyed, somebody said they were walking along what was the river, looking down and thought she was just seeing things, it turns out it was faces and bodies of people that had been washed away.

I have been reading about the Orleans Parish Prison that was abandoned by staff when Katrina hit. That is an awful story. I hope places are more prepared this time

I saw a program about the Orleans prison not so long ago too, in fact I think I wrote about it on one of the prison threads. I didn't realise how the prisoners were just left to fend for themselves. I read that they had no way of escaping as the waters began to rise. And apparently some of the younger, more vulnerable prisoners were a target for sex attacks. But many other prisoners formed a ring of steel around them to protect them. The prisoners had access to very little water or food and were essentially sitting ducks, trapped inside. They weren't treated like human beings and some of them hadn't even gone to court yet! Beyond awful.
I think mother nature is so scary. I can't even imagine the speed of the winds and the strength and force of the water. I bet the noise of it must be enough to terrify anyone. Absolutely awful. Does anyone know if its been downgraded at all? Or is it remaining the same?

Do you know what the program was called? I think there is one called "when the levees break" although I am not sure if it is solely about the prison. It really sounds horrendous what they went through.

I keep seeing people commenting about "hurricane Kirk" whilst the UK does get some awful devastating weather, it really is nothing compared to what the US get.

CNN is doing live updates if anyone wanted to follow any news channels

I think it is a cat 4 at the moment.

It may have been that documentary, but if I'm honest I can't 100% remember. But I do know that because of what happened, the whole system in Americas prisons was over hauled and changed.
They were just left there to die. Alot of them were in for minor misdemeanours too. They were left for days in the rising waters, obviously the water was filthy and they had limited food and water themselves.

Il never forget seeing the footage of Katrina, all those people asking for help sitting on top of their roofs- praying for rescue. So heartbreaking.

Iv seen the daily mail are reporting that a couple from the UK are heading over to experience the hurricae- like wtf??? Utterly selfish! Let the emergency services deal with the locals that have no choice but to stay. fool heads.
