I've had to come cuddle my dopey mare today after watching tiktoks of horses being left to fend for themselves the last couple of days 😭 fingers crossed they all made it through safe and sound ❤

Florida for a long time was very sparsely populated - one of the last frontiers. An undesirable hot swampy hellscape that no one wanted to live in.

The whole civilization there is an artificial construct that wouldn't exist without AC and all the land reclamation to drain the swamps.

The gulf recorded its highest ever temperature this year. These once in 100 years events are more like every couple of years these days. When you mess with mother nature that much it's sadly going to be very vulnerable. It's my home state and I have a complicated relationship with it 😬

I've got a lot of family and friends there, I'm trying not to think about it and hope that the predictions of weakening significantly before landfall are accurate.

Maybe I'm being melodramatic as I'm personally affected by it, but the extreme weather everywhere never seems to stop. Really makes me worry for the future.

2 hurricanes in 2 weeks is just insane. Maybe it's time to not rebuild Florida and accept some places just aren't suitable to live in anymore.

I can not stop thinking about the animals. I know human life is important too but humans have the chance to leave, prepare themselves as best as they can etc whereas animals have no clue and so many just left to fend for themselves. on Tiktok nearly ever video that contains an animal with a family fleeing before the hurricane hits has people commenting ''thank you for taking your fur baby!'' wtf?? I could never ever imagine leaving my pets behind - if they couldn't come then I wouldn't be going full stop.

atm I've been looking at the Naples pier webcam and can't believe people are surfing! I don't know how badly this area might be affected but I couldn't imagine just taking myself to the beach for a surf when a hurricane is on its way. Earlier on there were families on the beach with young kids. I just really hope these people have somewhere safe to go to

I was watching a tik tok of a lady with a homestead and she's got loads of animals she's looked after and rescued. She's not in an evacuation zone (shes somewhere near tampa) -but she says her husband has lived there all his life and this is the hurricane that's got him real scared. They aren't leaving because she says her animals are her children. She can't put them in a barn because it's so dangerous in case it collapses. So she has to bring the smaller animals (chickens, dogs, cats, small cows) inside her home- but leave her horses outside. She said 'imagine leaving your children outside?' And it honestly just broke me. She seems in complete despair, she knows she's not in the direct line but she knows it will be bad and it's just crushed her. Her tik tok doesn't seem like the normal attention seeking tik tok- she seems genuinely heartbroken and scared for her animals which are her life. She's just asking for prayers bless her.
Utterly heartbreaking x

This is petrifying to watch. And as a horse owner, seeing horses have air tags attached to them or phone numbers painted on them and being set loose for their best chance of survival, seriously breaks my heart 💔 And I'm seeing that people can't get out because the highways are rammed and there's no gas. Honestly terrifying. My thoughts and prayers go out to anybody affected 🙏

I couldn't leave mine. Either she comes with me or I stay there with her and what will be will be 💔
Honestly this is what gets me, the people can choose to leave or stay but thinking of all the horses/strays/sheep/cattle who cant leave and dont understand whats happening makes me want to cry.

I am worried sick about this. I have family directly in the projected path who have had to evacuate, god knows what they are going to be left with.

Same. I would be heartbroken if I couldn’t take them with me, I wouldn’t be able to leave. I saw someone who had 2 horses and a mini, they put the mini in their back seats as they said there was no way they were leaving anyone behind.
I hope it gets downgraded before it hits Florida and isn’t as bad as expected 🤞🏼

I'm definitely not a fan of the names they give these storms - it seems to make them almost sound a silly. 'Milton' sounds like he's a 48 year old Tax Accountant from Denver.

Many of the people in Florida are piss-poor. I know we're used to seeing these big villas and boats and all these Tiktoks of people boarding up their lovely houses, but this isn't the reality for many. I went on a trip few years back which involved visiting some of the smaller towns and they really have nothing. I hate to think that those people are going to lose the small amount that they do have and I hope there is support for them afterwards, but I fear there won't be.

These people are beyond stupid!!! 😡😡
There is a kid in the bottom left of the feed sat on the floor laughing at being swept forward by the water. They won't be laughing when the kid bangs their head and gets swept away. Idiots!!

I can't even grasp a storm surge of 10-15ft, that is devastating. My heart is breaking for the animals

There are lots of British families here who couldn’t go home. We’re currently at Disney World because we couldn’t get a flight out and my family that is local to Saint Petersburg is here having evacuated. I figure it’s better we just stay here. I’m really concerned for the coastal communities.
I’ve heard that Disney world is probably one of the safest places you could be right now. Please can you let us know that you’re okay after tonight

Hi, Disney is a good place to be. The cast members will look after them. They should make sure they have plenty of food and water in their room as they won’t be able to leave for a while, and make sure they charge all their devices in case they lose power. Orlando is in the path of the hurricane but far enough in land that storm surge shouldn’t be an issue. The Disney resorts will be full so plenty of people around to support them if needed.
Thank you so much, that makes me feel a bit better. They've been told the parks are all closing from 2pm tomorrow. They stocked up on food and drinks last week and again yesterday - the excitement of Walmart and Target!! They have a couple of power banks each and have made sure they are fully charged along with their phones etc, and have cash should they need it. The hotel staff are taking good care of them. I'm sure they'll be fine, I just feel so helpless being so far away.

I live in Scotland and I’m feeling panicked for Florida. I can’t begin to imagine. Hearing them having to write their names and DOB on their arms 😭
