How much do you earn?

I work in HR/Recruitment for a technology company and earn £44K a year pre-tax with benefits like private healthcare, above average pension and other perks on top. I am happy with what I make but it can be annoying dealing with people (software engineers) who think the average salary is £50K+ just because it is in their roles

(Let bear in mind I’m self employed and my business has been HIT HARD by the pandemic but I’m ok, there’s a lot worse off than me)

So bonus has come in....he already earns a very good salary....but this month... his pay check is ....45k

I know just how you feel! I worked for a software company and the 22-year-old devs fresh out of uni thinking they were underpaid at £35k was soul-crushing.

Yes! It’s the younger devs who are the worst I’ve found. They don’t realise that the salaries plateau when you get higher up the chain! However I did have one guy (mid 30s) tell me that £75,000 per year was not anywhere near an appropriate living wage in the North of England. Fully serious as well. I had to take a minute but ended up making a comment to him about how he should think about going to visit a foodbank to see people who really struggle. He reported me to my manager but she agreed

What a naive person, I hope they never go into management. You never know what costs people have on the other side but £75k is huge.

This is why I'm pro having open salaries or at least banding that's visible (like in the public sector), so that everyone is are aware of the range of salaries of the people they work with. Maybe people would give the office admin a bit more respect if they knew they earned a 1/4 of what they earn. I work in finance so I see the full payroll and it really puts things in perspective, and I think it's why this thread is so popular!

Totally agree! We are considering bringing in open banded salaries but we also hire a lot of software engineers so would need bands for every single niche which makes things slightly more complex.
I do think that people need a knock back to reality at times. I might snoop that £75k guys LinkedIn to see if he ever got another job...

He is a Trader so good money is expected I suppose.... but apparently he’s missed the ‘good ol days’ corse hun! His seniors are taking home 100% - 200% bonus’ so large 6 figures blows my mind.
No Rock’N’Roll / Wolf of wall street lifestyle here. He is paying for our new kitchen (not complaining) but the rest is being invested - he’s too sensible.

I’m a stay at home mum.
I get £1400 a month paid into my account. I’m responsible for my own car, insurance and debt from this. I always felt like I had to ask permission for money. This way I don’t. Suits us.

Same position. Altogether I have £1,740 paid into my account (includes child benefit). That covers all our joint household bills, shopping, car insurance, petrol, debt and any other extras. So if i want money to spend on anything extra I have to be really careful with managing money and saving.

He’s very lucky to be getting that. I work for an investment firm (junior so not on a big salary) and most bonuses have been stopped (unless their funds have overperformed) and no pay rises this year. As you can imagine this hasn’t gone down well, especially seeing as all the CEO’s treated themselves to 6 figure bonuses. Glad you’re getting some benefit with the new kitchen!

How far along are you with experience? And qualifications? I a trainee accountant in the midlands I’m on 22k still have a good few exams left though so it’s interesting where other people are at!

I'm ATT/CTA qualified too. ATT/ACCA/ACA qualified people tend to earn less money because their qualifications are less specialist.

I've worked for a big 4 firm but now in industry and at the big 4 firm I earnt more than my counterparts in audit once qualified and then in industry I have always earnt more than my accounting equivalents at the same grade.

Some of the salaries are blowing my mindddd. The differences in industries is crazy. Here's hoping for a day when carers and nurses etc are also that blessed! (This is no shade, I know people work hard and it's just how the world is).

Ouch, his team still got payrises and bonuses which are all up from last year! He’s in EFX and they over performed however their spot and forwards weren’t happy at all with their numbers! I’d still be happy with their base salaries but they’ve been spoilt over the years
