I just watched her video "WHY I CHANGED MY DIET & INCREASED MY CALORIES | FROM OMNIVORE TO VEGETARIAN TO VEGAN". Honestly I think she just switched from anorexia to orthorexia

does she have a passion about anything tbh ?

wait wait whaaat !! holistic medicine is NOT medicine
oh look another red flag
The only passion she has is eating bland food and thinking it's delicious. But in seriousness, in her video when she reacted to her singing she actually seemed to be passionate about something! I think it's a shame that working in performing arts itsn't good for her body image and mental health, becuase that's the only thing she's shown genuine passion in!

Around the 11 minute mark she talks about it I think she's still interested in this route but using nutrition as the route to get there. She's mentioned being interested in Masters with research focused on the gut biome and how that is related to health, which does has some scientific roots but still sound far too pseudosciency for my brain I'm afraid.

Gaaaaah I swear her only passion is trying to prove herself right in any situation! This whole nutrition thing is defo about trying to justify her own food habits in some way.

Gut health really isn't pseudoscience. I'm not sure you know what that word means?

Gut mucrobiome and health is a very popular trend among naturopaths and holistic “doctors” so there is a ton of pseudoscience circulating.

There have been some very enlightening researches in the past years but we haven’t reached the point that we can make health claims just yet. Yes we have a better understanding of what’s going on but fake doctors over exaggerate the finding to attract clients.

Oh gee
I just watched it

UK has a huge problem with quack doctors and homeopathy because Prince Charles adores homeopathy and alternative “medicine” .

I can’t believe she was top of her class in Natural/Biological sciences !!!

Gee

Do reaserch ? Sure I’m with you Holly.
But as you state you are predetermined that yoga and veganism are panacea.

So from what I understand she wanted to study medicine for the credentials and not to actually educate herself in medicine..

Am I obsessing over Holly ? Maybe
It's exams season bear with me

I have always been a foodie, I've always loved food

On another note, aside from all this specific science talk (which I don’t understand one bit lmao)... does anyone else think it’s strange for Holly to consider herself ‘recovered’ and yet still post all about her food? Like yeah she’s vegan (and very preachy) but anyone with a normal relationship with food doesn’t post their food like that. Yeah, sure, I’ll post if I get a super yummy meal at a restaurant or something, or if I’ve made a super fancy meal at home, but I wouldn’t post like Holly does.

I just think it shows how obsessive she still is about it all? No one who is recovered would feel a need to post about food that often. Food isn’t a personality trait, it’s something we all need to live!

One thing that stands out about Holly is that she doesn’t seem to have any interests. For an educated person she doesn’t seem to have much knowledge outside her subject. I’m a first year student, and I don’t just limit myself to my subject, I watch the news, read about politics, watch documentaries etc. But holly never shows herself learning about things that don’t relate to biology/sciences. She never seems to watch YouTube, tv, has only just started reading books and other than exercising she doesn’t appear to have any hobbies. It’s almost like she restricts herself so much that she can’t possibly venture into something new. It would be really good for holly and her channel if she showed learning new things and developing new interests and just letting go to do something relaxing. Do we think she has ever just sat on the sofa watching tv with her family?

she shows signs of orthorexia -and I mean neon signs-

buut considering her "holistic" approach to healthcare, she may be trying to build her brand
(like several other influencers that promote alternative treatments/suppements/veganism to cure whatever)

she'll probably start preaching thy food is thy medicine at some point

The whole sitting with her family thing is always something she makes a big deal of whenever it happens, so I would say no, she doesn’t do it often at all. The whole household just seems quite hostile.

Holly’s dad seems to never engage with her enthusiastically, her mum always seems quite judgemental, Emily brings out (as Holly liked to call it) this weird ‘gremlin’ side of Holly, and then there’s Matthew, who Holly seems to forever be embarrassing all over her channel (whether that be filming him in his boxers or waking him up from a nap on camera).

It’s just very strange. It’s like their house is a complete separate world to the one everyone else seems to be living in.

I’ve said this before but I think her videos are slowly becoming responses to the threads she reads, whether that be here or GG. Like I’ve said, it’s like she’s trying to prove to herself that she’s ‘worthy’ and can change her behaviour patterns successfully, as if ‘change behaviour patterns’ is something on her checklist.

she needs to realise that it goes deeper than just being able to take a day off and literally sit and watch TV/snack/sleep. She needs to actually be okay with that, not just tick it off some silly to-do list. Everything is about control, but a ‘do nothing’ day should be the complete opposite, ie. no control! Just chillout!

It’s gone past the point of relativity now. Holly needs to talk to someone professional. (Also notice how she’s stopped replying with ‘it’s all relative’ since it was brought up on the thread, mmmmm🤔🤔)

YES!!! I think her time is actually structured around her meals etc, and being upstairs and isolating herself means she doesn’t snack or just browse around the kitchen.
Exactly. You don't need to plan a chillout day! Reminds me of this moment in Friends 🤣

I'm doing a PhD in chemistry I know what it means 😂

I know that gut health isn't pseudoscience, a lot of important and scientifically sound research has been carried out into this subject. However it does seem to be co-opted by people online, as xekatinaz said, who seem to think that any and all ailment can be realted back to gut health (and probably be cured by an alkaline, vegan diet ). And I fear that Holly may have been swept along in this belief, therefore her reasons for persuing this line of research are a little dubious to me

I'd hope that any good supervisor would shoot any pseudoscience down when she proposed a project for research. She's applied to some pretty reputable unis that I would imagine don't want to put their names behind any research that'll make them look bad.

Just skimmed through this video again and everything about it just screams ignorance.

For 1, she pushes away any advice in the comments concerning her intake vs. The amount of exercise. On one answer she pushes off the whole ‘you need to eat more for the amount of exercise you’re doing’ buy changing her answer to focus on ‘fixing a routine’ and ‘it’s more balanced than before’. Just because it’s more balanced Holly does NOT mean you're by any means recovered. Might be better in comparison with when you were ANOREXIC but there’s still huge improvements to be made.

And 2, the way she talks about taking care of your immune system ‘because of the current climate’ it’s like.... shut up??!!! The healthiest of people (even back then when the video was made) were falling I’ll with covid-19 and not recovering. It just shows, once again, her clear lack of knowledge on the world around her!!! Make friends Holly, talk to people, immerse yourself in everything around you. That’s tricky now of course but even back in Cambridge she had zero social life, it was all about being productive.

And another thing, and I’ve only just come to this conclusion now, but I think Holly almost uses vlogging and her channel to try and substitute actually talking to real people. It’s like her camera is her best friend and it’s sad to see that she’s probably more comfortable talking to an inanimate object and putting it out to the whole internet than actually speaking to family and/or friends in person. Opinions on this?

That's so sad but you've hit the nail on the head. I really do hope she outgrows this. I went through my own shut at the end of my teenage years and early 20s when I really didn't have any friends and I was u so used to it and fine being alone it never bothered me.

Then cue this boy at work who I thought I liked so I made an effort to hang out with him, get drinks after work etc and low and behold I'm now in a long term relationship (with that boy) AND have an amazing friendship group. So I see a lot of myself in Holly and I hope that one day she can have the same sort of growth and slow realisation that I did. I think it will be close to impossible if she's living at home though. It took me 5 years if living alone (and my home life was fine) to get to that initial point.

This popped up in my recommended and decided to click on it, and I went to one of the comments which asks about whether vlogging affected Holly’s Cambridge experience etc.

Her response totally backs up what I said previously about her substituting talking to actual people by talking to a camera. Her response to the comment basically said vlogging was a way for her to ‘talk to people, ie, the camera’, and it’s just so sad to think she really does feel like she’s actually talking to people, when all she’s doing is speaking to herself, on her own.

Like a response said, I really do hope she grows out of this and learns that speaking to actual people isn’t the same as chatting away to a camera. She needs to learn that first and foremost with her family, but also with friends and having people around you. I wonder if she doesn’t let people get too close for a fear of them calling her out on her habits?

Hope she takes the university in the Netherlands. Think it would really push her to grow up - difficult to exist in a bubble when you're living in a whole other country with no one you know. Think it would be really good for her - not studying nutrition, mind. But just getting away.

Idk.. judging from her Aus experience she may end up even more sheltered

It will be a great chance to become more (emotionally) independent and dive into adulthood.
