Has anyone been offered the Covid vaccine due to being “obese”?

I thought they were only offering it in age brackets and then to clinically vulnerable - is obesity a reason people have been asked to shield?

People with clinical obesity are seen as clinically vulnerable. They usually have other underlying health conditions such as diabetes/prediabetes plus more specialist resources are required when they are admitted to hospital. They take up more time of nursing staff in terms of moving and handling issues, treating bed sores, lack of self care re hygiene, toileting. I can remember when my mum was in hospital a few years ago. Re a patient that in the next bed that was obese, it took four nurses to roll over an patient every few hours to prevent bed sores and also the same amount of nurses to hoist them out of bed onto a commode for toileting.
I imagine its a strain that hospitals/wards can do without when they're already pushed to the limit.

I've had MS for twenty years and have heard absolutely nothing. And we're not classed as "clinically extremely vulnerable" either despite MS being an auto immune illness where any kind of infection, even a simple cold, can cause major issues - just "clinically vunerable". This report is also very concerning. It's a major neurological illness in the UK so I'm perplexed as to why the duck are we being ignored?

Oh yeah, I'm fat too because I am disabled!

Obesity and other health conditions like diabetes are in group six, so the one before over 60’s. These haven’t been offered yet in my area, I’m group six as I have an auto immune disease.
Your gp won’t know you’re obese though unless you’ve seen them.

Headline news is that obese criminal Rose West has received her Covid jab whilst prison officers haven't received theirs. There is something deeply wrong with this country.

Not myself but a family member who is in her fifties and morbidly obese has been asked to make her vaccine appointment. We are in London and they seem to be smashing through all the groups here especially in my borough.

Well, yes. They're vaccinating the people who are highest risk of requiring hospitalisation (and of catching it from being in an enclosed space all the time) before the generally normal BMI, healthy staff. I'd rather bad people were vaccinated so they aren't taking up hospital beds in their hundreds; an outbreak in clinically vulnerable prisoners will completely overrun a local hospital's ICU simply by sheer weight of numbers.

We aren't a country that operates a death penalty unlike the US where they're being left to die and kill other prisoners off.

Yep if your bmi is over 40 you will be offered covid vaccine in group 6
Is there an age range? My relative was offered the vaccine due to being obese and he’s 19! I’m older, more obese than him and haven’t received it yet

Not that I know of, just over 16 or 18 depending which vaccine

A lady in my office has had her first dose...obese and pre-diabetic. She received a shielding letter 1st lockdown but hasn't had one since.

My doctor doesn’t even know what I weigh, how are they working out who is obese or not? Last time I was weighed was at my midwife booking appointment nearly 3 years ago and I’m about 3 stone heavier now 🙈🥴 but my doctors wouldn’t know that.

Yup my friend had hers today l, she’s lost a ton of weight but hasn’t been weighed since she had her last child 5 years ago, so has been put down as obese and prioritised.

Whilst asthmatics like myself have been removed from the priority list 😩

This is what I was wondering. Obviously my doctor can see I’m fat on the few occasions I see them and they obviously know I’m obese as I get invited to flu jabs but I haven’t actually been weighed since I was pregnant 10 years ago.

There must be loads of people who’s weight has changed lots since they were last weighed at the doctors both more and less.

haven’t been invited to vaccine yet. Feel bad if I do though, I dont take the nhs flu jab as I’m so ashamed.

This has made me cry. Never be ashamed of yourself. I understand why you're saying this, but you are just as important as anybody else. If you want to lose some weight and can (it's not always straightforward in terms of other health issues), then set a goal and go for it. There's masses of information available. Don't see it as a complete amount of weight to lose but a bit at a time.

But being obese does not make you a lesser person, so please never think that again and if you are offered the vaccine, please take it. x

I wonder if it is a local lottery - depending on the information they have on file at GPs? I have mild asthma but had my vaccine today - my GP rang me out of the blue in the week and told me they are booking me in! I am 30 so wasn’t expecting the call for a while.

Not with asthma the JCVI has stated that asthmatics with controlled asthma who hasn’t had hospital admissions or needed 3 sets of oral steroids (not inhalers) doesn’t need to be prioritised. It’s black and white, and you would come up in searches.

Just to add to that. People getting vaccinated is good for everyone. We all want the overall risk to be reduced. We all benefit from those at higher risk being prioritised because otherwise our hospital systems will be completely overwhelmed (and we obviously don't want to see people die!) Obesity increases risk of dying of covid so it's completely legitimate to prioritise people with a BMI above 40. Public health isn't about moral judgements thank God!

I’m classed as clinically obese and had covid at the start of January. I’m 30 and I don’t have any underlying health conditions and had no issues with breathing during the time I was unwell, it was just like a bad flu with loss of taste and smell.

I think there’s too much scaremongering going on but I hope I get the vaccine soon so I can feel more comfortable when I go out.
