Grammar Pet Peeves

People who consistently spell someone's name wrong, even when they've known them for years, or when the name is right there in front of them on an email or social media. I'm thinking Micheal/Michael, Jane/Jayne, Jackie/Jacqui, etc.

Super Nanny was fab at terrible grammar. Remember "asseptable"? There was that really difficult girl yelling at her "It's ACCEPTABLE not asseptable"

Should of/could of/would of.

When Arctic is misspelled as Artic.

I hate the misuse of apostrophes - Sunday's instead of Sundays or DVD's instead of DVDs - and when people refuse to use commas, or dramatically overuse full stops.

I also internally cringe when I hear "something" pronounced as "somethink", "unacceptable" as "unasseptable" or "ask" pronounced as "axe" and "espresso" as "expresso".

And I appreciate it's very specific, but it also irks me when people misspell broccoli!

People writing thinks like 'argh, what a cute puppy' instead of ' ahh , what a cute puppy'.

To me the former is a negative reaction , and the latter a positive and I read them as such . My inner voice pronounces them differently.

Many years ago when I was at Secretarial College, we were taught never to use the words: get, got, getting, do or doing. Ever since I've hated seeing those words. For instance:

I got a new coat - could become, I bought a new coat.

When I was doing the housework I got the polish out - could become, I used the polish while completing the housework.

Adverbs seem to be a thing of the past.

For example, he ran quick down the road. No, he ran quickly down the road.

On another note, I am finding the tabloids seem to be employing "journalists" who are not far off being illiterate. Many articles now are unreadble because the writing is so appalling.

I have been reading a few threads today and some of them I've had to stop reading, because I was so irritated by the amount of times people have said 'could of / should of / would of'. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but just wondered if anyone else has any particular grammar pet peeves?! So that we can be old and grumpy together haha!

I think that your post could have been improved by changing your opening sentence to 'I've had to stop reading a few posts today because....'
But no matter, knowing your shit and knowing you're shit are just a very sad sign of the failure of education. It's really sad that children spend 15+ years in school and no one bothers to teach them how to understand their own language
I try to ignore typos but have a massive issue with a regular poster who thinks thanks that 'an' is and, but that's my particular peeve.

I am told it's dialect but I'm certain the amount of people who say "I seen" has risen significantly in recent years and I cringe internally every time.

"Per say" instead of "Per se"

... I could go on all day!

The trend for saying that something is "addicting" rather than "addictive". I believe that it's technically acceptable, but to me, it just sounds wrong.

It drives me up the wall, but what can you do? No point challenging them, you get a shit load of abuse for your effort.

Facebook is the worst place to see it.

The latest ones are people getting WERE and WHERE mixed up.

WOMAN and WOMEN were bad enough, now we have something else to cause rage!



That usually reflects the way they speak.

I didn't realise until I got facebook how many people have no idea how to use apostrophes (why on earth would you say, as I saw earlier "I went to the shops to buy some shoe's" how on earth would you think one plural randomly has punctuation like that?!), the difference between there and their etc

I am on quite a lot of parent groups for special needs children. Quite often respite is talked about.....or maybe rest bite? What on earth do they think rest bite is???
