How are everyones plants/veg holding up in this terrible weather?
My roses, alliums, hydrangeas all seem to be absolutely thriving with green growth. No leaves back on acers or wisteria yet and the garden is like a bog. I don’t plant veg but have been trying to germinate sweet peas and petunias in the house but they don’t seem to be working . So very mixed bag at the moment!

I got a grow light for my seedlings and it was really worth the money - I was struggling to get enough light even from my best windowsill and things were coming up leggy and leaning
Which one did you get? I've looked at them before but never settled on buying one. I struggle with available plug sockets in my house too. They're in really random inaccessible places 😞

Yes, same here - lots of things going gangbusters here, earlier than last year. I don't even think we're going to get another frost this year ( she says hopefully)

I recently got a house with a garden and I’m a complete novice! I’d like to have a little flower bed in this space and it’s probably a stupid question but what do I need? Pull up all these weeds, put down a liner and top with soil/compost? Also open to suggestion of low maintenance/beginner planets as it were!

So I’ve got a part garden, part cat problem & I was wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks that have worked. Our house was empty for 2 years before we purchased & next doors cat made itself quite at home in the front garden which is quite open (we’re a corner plot) the previous owners of our house were keen gardeners and the garden had overgrown but had lots of bushes & shrubs.
Fast forward to now, we’ve been here two years and on a daily basis I’m chasing the cat out, it digs up my boarders to use as its toilet and I’m at my wits end. The world according to Google has suggested the following & I’ve tried them all:
1. Sonar - it sat in front of the sonar unfazed
2. Citrus peels - again sat on them 🙄
3. Vinegar - I soak the garden in the stuff, doesn’t deter him at all
4. Plant lavender & sharp bushes - he them up and sprays on them

I planted yesterday my autumn/ winter pansies etc yesterday & when I’ve looked at the garden this morning - they’ve been dug up 😢
I’m sick of wasting money trying to make my garden nice as next doors garden is fine & they get to have nice plants - cause their cats using my garden as the loo 😡😢

please if anyone has any tips, suggestions or advice - I’m only short of just leaving the garden to overgrow and pretend it doesn’t exist anymore, I’m that fed up!

Congrats on the house! :)

I wouldn't personally put soil over liner, normally you would plant through liner (put it down and then cut an 'x' and peel it back to plant in) and top with gravel or bark to weigh it down/make it look pretty...

What sort of plants are you thinking? perennials like lavender or roses? or some bedding plants just for the summer?

I've always done well with snapdragons and fuchsias (totally slug proof) and geraniums are really good for people (like me) who aren't good at regularly watering them.

You could even do some sweet peas, grow them up some canes (make like a teepee with some bamboo sticks and string) and just pick them regularly to keep them flowering.

Gardening is just trial and error, plant what you think looks pretty and see what happens :)

Good Luck ❤
Thank you! I did think lavender would be nice. And good to know re slug proof cause there are soooo many slugs here!

What bulbs is everyone planting for spring?
I’m going to add some more white tulips as they seemed to last the longest, plus muscari, anenome, and I think I’ll have a go at these.

Do any of you have a hanging basket? We bought a hanging basket, what flowers would look really nice in it? As you can tell I don’t know much about gardening and flowers 😅
