I think one of the biggest problems is that motorsport is still incredibly macho sport (plus we have races in very anti-gay countries or sponsors from those countries) and anything relationship wise deferring from strictly heterosexual is a no no. But only when it comes to men, women can have girlfriends, no issues there, but men, nope, that's wrong. So even if there was a gay driver (and I am not saying there is, this is only hypothetical), I think he wouldn't come out any time soon, if not for a worry what would fans think but also for a worry about his actual job.
So yeah, I think this is why it's wrong to seriously speculate about it.
But also with all this - if we joke Carlando is real or that someone has a "boyfriend", it doesn't mean we really think it's real real. Context is important.
It's wrong to seriously speculate on anyone's sexuality full stop when they have not spoken about it themselves.
Making jokes about Carlando or Yuki & Pierre or whatever is one thing because they are literally just jokes and they all play into it anyway, nobody actually thinks they're together, but actually seriously speculating on somebody's sexuality as has happened a lot to Lewis over the years and I'm increasingly seeing people doing about Lando is a huge no. It is nobody's business how they identify - straight, gay, bi, pan, fluid, whatever - unless they choose to talk about it themselves and public speculation (and trying to dig up dirt which some gossip instas seem to be trying to do) can force someone out of the closet who is not ready which can be incredibly harmful to a closeted person. That goes for all the drivers. NOBODY has the right to do that to ANYONE. If a driver ever talks about their sexuality being anything other than straight or openly starts dating someone of the same sex then fine, speculate which guys they may be hooking up with just as we speculate which women drivers who openly date women are hooking up with.
How people have not learned this yet is beyond me. When Kit Connor was forced out of the closet recently, Chris Colfer, who himself was forced to come out at 18 because of a character he played and massive speculation on his private life, made a really good statement about how the hell is this still happening in 2023 and how has society not learned in the last decade how incredibly harmful this is?

What's with the policing on this thread?
There's been no homophobia. But yes, people are curious about Lewis' private life - whether he's hoeing with women, who those women are. Whether he has NDAs? That seems to be OK to discuss? Seemingly it's also fine to say people are escorts and being paid or not being paid.
But suddenly wondering whether Lewis is with men is a bad and dreadful thing, not to be mentioned? On a gossip site?
Madness.
If you can't understand the different in speculating which woman a man who openly dates women might be hooking up with, and seriously speculating whether someone who has never discussed their sexuality and has only ever publicly hooked up with women might be hooking up with men as well then please go and educate yourself.
ETA I apologise for the rant, I know this is not the usual tone here, but as someone who is bisexual and was in the closet until relatively late, this is a huge trigger point for me. The idea of people speculating on my sexuality and trying to out me before I was ready to tell people makes me feel physically sick and the same when i see people doing to others.
