So hilarious how much she shouts at others for making mistakes and about how they must apologise if they dare disagree with her she is outed for doing multiple things VERY wrong and she says....nothing...nothing at all. What a loser.

FG was sort of like my introduction into feminism and when I first read her book it was all new to me. But now my eyes have been opened to the fact that she is not doing anything revolutionary but actually she is heavily influenced by other people and passes it off as her own work!

Does anyone have any suggestions of better feminist accounts to follow?
I’d suggest following Roxane Gay too, but also Mona Eltahawy (she wrote The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls), Lola Olufemi (Feminism, Interrupted), Tressie McMillam Cottom (Thick, and other Essays), Gal-Dem (online publication), witch Media (another online mag), Everyday Feminism, The F-Word (UK online blog), and Laurie Penny. All do brilliant work and I’ve learnt a lot from them over the years.

I quite liked the book but when I found out she was 21 I was a bit like ooooh because Not much life experience? Just my personal opinion. One thing I think though is all the people she constantly reposts of them saying the same things seems quite cult like?

Florence has responded.
I've seen. I like how she has done it as a story so nobody can publicly ask her questions - so she can just ignore them. She has also limited comments on her most recent post.

I think I see the other arguments which are saying the slumflower also copied people. However, this does seem a bit too close to comfort - same agency, friends, similar directions - this is more than influence, there is definitely copying involved. Nobody is innocent but something just doesn't sit right with me about this.

At the end of the day it is true that new products are always influenced by others. They are an accumulation of past works. BUT there is a line to be drawn. And the whole style of direction of the slumflower's book is just too similar.

Also, wtf with their agency - they seem to have dropped the slumflower! I don't agree with that at all.

Florence has responded.
Her response is definitely orchestrated by many many people and scrutinised with a fine tooth comb.

Personally at the moment I am unsure how to feel about this all. Should women be tearing other women down. Chideda has a lot of valid points as does Florence. There is very few original feminist ideas it seems, every new idea is an adaptation of the last. There is definitely room for all ideas but I can see where both of them are coming from.

Also thought this when I found out she was only 21. I'm 24 and I've matured so much already into my twenties, but I'm well aware I'm not mature enough to be preaching at everyone.

I do see this point but I also think she has spent a lot of her insta-fame tearing others down. Ive seen her actively involved in pushing people off of insta because they did one thing wrong. This is quite a big thing to get wrong. Also the whole her being a bully at school makes it difficult for me to feel sorry for her...

totally agree with this - my issue with her statement is how can you go from posting tit like THE FLOSS EFFECT to saying “I’ve never claimed to be the first person to talk about these topics”. It just doesn’t sit right with me.

I think there’s probably a lot going on behind the scenes, unfortunately as Chidera appears to have been dropped by their management she will come out worse from the situation while this will all blow over for Florence and she’ll carry on as before.

It just makes me sad - “dump him” feminism is so dated and completely ignores the fact that probably a large percentage of men in floss’ age range were raised by feminists, it’s so reductive to just be like “men are trash” no people can all be trash it’s not a gender specific trait lol

Agree 100% with everything you said. All this just makes me feel better for her making me uncomfortable to start with.

I feel really bad for Chidera. It seems like she has tried to resolve this behind the scenes- Florence said at launch Chidera asked for endorsement to be removed, so it has been going on since then. She had every right to then try raise awareness of the issue.

When I read her response it looked like her/ her team had been here- a lot of the things her post tried to cover felt kinda tied in with the things said here.
One thing that didn’t sit right was how she basically said Chidera didn’t want to endorse her book out of the blue and without reason. I mean it could have happened like that but how many people would essentially cut ties without telling someone why/some kind of discussion?

I went to the same school as Florence, obviously it’s been nearly 10 years but it’s crazy how different her attitude is to how she was in school. She was one of the mean, popular girls and was known to be quite the bully. Highlight was when some girls from another local school broke into our school to fight Florence for sleeping with their boyfriends.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about what she said last night. To me, it felt it was lacking real apology and more or less, shifting the blame to Chidera... not to mention Floss’ most used word.. ✨ ACCOUNTABILITY ✨ What also bugs me, is that she tried saying she never started any kind of movement but every thing she seemed to post before Chidera spoke up was THE FLOSS EFFECT? Hun, women have been leaving their partners due to realising their sexuality for YEARS, please crawl out of your hole for a second. It’ll be interesting to see when she shows her face on stories again, whether she’s throwing tit shapes thinking she looks like a majestic icon with tit hair. I’ve really gone off her, especially since the pandemic started.

In January, Chidera quotes Florence on her grid and you can see her artwork on the wall behind her, so they seemed to be on good terms then. This was also the month Florence showed the front cover for her book with the quote “Florence is a powerhouse” the Slumflower

It is before she actually saw the book though.

Yeah that’s what I thought! I’m assuming that’s when their friendship soured?
Yes I imagine. I mean I would feel the same if someone jumped on the back of me for popularity, spent ages talking about BLM and then stole my ideas!

I think Chiddera and Florence were friends, and that she stopped speaking to her once she actually saw the book and how similar it was. None of this is a surprise to Florence 🙄

For the sake of accuracy, Chidera hasn't actually been "dropped" by her management. She dropped THEM back in October, giving them 3 months' notice to dissolve their contract with each other, as per its terms. After Chidera blasted Florence on her story the management company emailed her to ask whether she agrees to bringing the termination forward by one month (it was due to end in January). Unless she's told them she agrees then she's technically still represented by them - if they wanted to drop her any sooner they'd have to argue that she breached the contract and she could challenge that in court if she wanted to. I think the management's email to Chidera is understandable since she publicly dragged one of their top-selling authors on social media with no warning or attempt at resolving things behind the scenes.

Personally I think both books are dissimilar enough that Chidera doesn't have much of a foot to stand on - which is probably why she's taken this fight to the court of public opinion rather than, y'know, actual court - i.e. suing Florence over intellectual property.

I'm indifferent to both of the authors. They both regurgitate other people's ideas into insta-friendly, non-challenging, prepackaged feminism that basically tells young women things they've been longing to hear. I thought it was kinda widely accepted that they're both hacks having fairly harmless fun on the internet, but people are acting like they're both leading academics caught plagiarizing lmao.

Basically this whole drama is trite and pointless but that won't stop me grabbing my popcorn 😂
