I don’t think they make as much as they claim - good friends of mine were bakers from their teens to retirement. They did proper cakes and everything in a trendy part of London. Their margins were very narrow - not the kind that would allow multiple jaunts abroad. Also, they had very long days so even if social media was a thing, they simply wouldn’t have the time to tit about as they needed to work.

I suspect a lot more of the girls’ lifestyles is funded by dads / partners than £14 brownies that sell out within 20 mins (which speaks to a daily cap - don’t want to burn out on a glorified hobby, not a living).

I asked about the Stork and spread vs butter and my friends said they found cakes made with Stork kept better in a freezer, lasted a bit longer when decorated but it had a more neutral taste that could be covered by the filling. Oh, and it was infinitely cheaper than butter. They goggled at the business model based on Tesco blocks and pre mixes.

I personally wonder if the complaints regarding the cake jars could be down to them recycling old freezer cake that would otherwise be thrown. Chucking in a mess of frosting is an attempt to cover sponge that is just about to go stale.

They cant be donig that bad for themselves though with 20+ staff they do proper cakes too and wedding cakes up until last year. Still i think they're overrated and people will get bored of the finch brand eventually

I wonder how many of their supposed staff are being paid properly. Social media influencers so probably clout. I really blinked at that screenshot upthread of that moan they did about not wanting to pay an 18yr old the same amount of money than the >25yr old standing next to them doing the exact same job. I know it was wrapped in a Corbyn rant wrapper, but whenever I hear or read of people whinging about paying their staff a fair wage, I’m not impressed. If you can’t afford to pay your staff fairly, you‘re either unspeakably greedy or you don’t have a viable business to my mind.

The internet is not lacking for people setting up a mail order cake business. These twins have very pretty looking cakes, they really do. So do a lot of other people, and a significant proportion scratch bake their products with proper ingredients. We might be heading into high unemployment and recession following covid so these companies will need to up their game to survive.

I know this is a rave thread, so I will say that photos of their micro display of baked goods in their shop is very cute.

Oh thanks I’ll just go back to my holiday less small house lifestyle no I agree what you say about them but you can’t assume we are all sitting in small houses just because we don’t rate them?? they are clearly doing well for themselves and sell out most days that’s clear. It seems that finch bakery is very popular. They have done well for themselves by selling cakes with mediocre ingredients at an extortionate price (anyone tried Lidl bakery brownies for < £1??? Incredible) then taking their high profit and spending it on big houses and lots of holidays to show off their earnings. Yes they’ve done well for themselves and must earn a lot but they seem like mean mean girls, particularly the way they have handled discovering this thread. It is not a nice trait at all.

People will always have an opinion on you, wherever they write it online or not, whether you read it or not, whether you screen shot it for your Instagram story or not. People will always have an opinion. You can choose to ignore it or you can choose to let it bother you. I know what I’d do.

I am actually glad they (clearly one of the twins) have posted on here as they have been reshaping people who said they have come on tattle to defend the twins and their posts have been deleted. When will stupid people understand that it gets deleted because it breaks tattle rules, ie aggressive, directly arguing with other members etc.

I think Tessa was the mastermind behind the whole social media hype and she will be hugely missed by the twins.
I think she did their company a huge favour in being so likeable and think they wouldn’t have the following they have if it wasn’t for her.

Plenty of others price their boxes much lower which I’m happy to pay as the brownies are amazing. I haven’t tried FB so can’t comment. I think they initially got so popular as they were so niche. Now we are surrounded by similar and you have to really stand out. It doesn’t appear they sell out like they used to, but that could be down to making more/quieter days.

Hinch, Monroe et al regularly set their Twitter / Insta followers on people, delete their involvement then pretend their fans went on a rampage off their own backs. It wouldn’t be inconceivable that some insta bakers might have a similar approach.

People discussing their idols and bringing up problematic aspects of their strategy or products isn’t about people being “jelly” or a personal slight on the fans who feel a genuine connection with them.

A lot of people bake, and a lot of people live near frou frou bakeries or are connected to someone who runs one. People are going to compare and contrast. For example, the twins probably use the offcuts and leftovers of cake and frosting from the production of their big cakes / cupcakes to put in a jar to sell. On Trustpilot they seem to be the most complained about thing. I knew someone who would use leftover sponge with stewed fruits and summer fruits to make hot puddings after finding the cake pops she made with the crumbs pretty dire.

Instead of insulting a board of people talking about the importance of using decent ingredients, maybe the fans / twins could actually see that people are actually throwing up suggestions to improve.

But no, it’s all about the clout not the baking, isn’t it ladies?

I feel the same as you! I was even thinking about buying their equipment as I like baking myself. The way they react to negative comments has put me off and they just seem really childish to say they are nearly 30

Ive wanted to try the brownies for ages and they're not selling out as quick so was tempted to get them but this thread put me off to be honest! That tweet moaning about paying staff wages when they'd also tweeted about going on various expensive holidays trips in the space of months! I know they're a business but it came across so icky
