I'm wearing Warm Neroli today! It's really lovely and orangey. Not the most massive longevity but the little bottle is only £5 (I think) so perfect for carrying in your bag for a top up.

Actually having just said that I just sniffed my cardi and it's still going strong!

hypnotic vanilla smells very medicinal and smoky on my skin… however smells lovely on my mum

tonka cream and tonka obsession - amazing. I really enjoy Juliette’s Ode to Dullness so anything with tonka in gives me super cosy autumn vibes. Very easy to wear with tonka cream leaning slightly sweeter.

@Scorpihoe amber fusion, it’s very spicy and “oriental” smelling with a warm amber dry down. I don’t really get the marine notices fragrantica notes it having. My mum claims it’s very masculine smelling but I really enjoy a more “androgynous” scent

M&S I need to collect this evening…

golden decade I enjoy as I love anything with a heavy jasmine base.

Red temptation a forever classic and something I won’t ever not buy

It is so disappointing for the price . Ive not tried many Byredos because I don't want to love them and then realise they perform like a fart in the wind .

Slow Dance has good lasting power but is very strong...I love Young Rose the best but I don't think that does last as well (though I can always smell it on my jackets when I've been wearing it).

I have a sample of gris dior on my counter at the moment too. I find that scent so interesting. I remember when I first smelt it, I wasn't quite sure, and then it grew on me. A bit like Rose 31 by Le Labo in that sense (scents ). Although they don't have the same profile at all. Have you tried anything from Le Labo?

Hahaha I should, I really want a Christmassy scent that I can wear every year that reminds me of the season.

I bought the 15ml of Rose 31 in the Cult Beauty Cyber Monday sale today . I think a lot of people like Another 13, but I think there is a note in it I can't smell - Iso E Super or something. It smells like half a perfume to me and I'm so disappointed as I know a lot of people love it.

Slow Dance has good lasting power but is very strong...I love Young Rose the best but I don't think that does last as well (though I can always smell it on my jackets when I've been wearing it).

I really wish I could identwhat some of the individual perfume notes actually smell like.

I know what rose, lemon, strawberry, vanilla, musk, basil, sage, leather, eucalyptus, smoke, lavender, plum, cherry smell like, for example. But I couldn’t for the life of me pinpoint what tonka bean, amber, magnolia, jasmine, frangipane, oud, ambroxin, cedar,patchouli and many others smell like.

So, oftentimes, when I smell a perfume with several notes and I don’t like it, I don’t know what exactly it is about it that I don’t like.

This makes blind buying perfumes very difficult for me, and very hit and miss.

If anyone knows of some sort of scratch and sniff tester card with loads of different single notes on it, let me know!

Yes, I also thought perhaps small vials of essential oils might work, if they come in the scents that I need help identifying! And funnily enough, tuberose is one I need to be able to identify cos I initially I assumed it was a type of rose but actually it isn’t. It’s a white flower that I still have no idea really what it smells like!

Yeah it's not easy. The only way I've been able to learn how some notes smell is by smelling a perfume, thinking oh it reminds me of the other pefume and comparing notes to see which ones match lol.

It doesn't always work though, for example I've tried Carnal Flower today and it totally reminds me of Mugler Angel (not seen anyone else mention that though) but they share like at least 4 notes

Tonka bean is vanilla like, patchouli is a very pungent smell, worn a lot by alternative, hippy types in the 60s-90s, it can be almost sweet but it is predominantly woody, occasionally with a high almost medicinal note. Very polarising. Obsession has a strong amber note so you could figure it out from that. Cedar smells like pencils. Ambroxan I hate, it’s got a very fuzzy nose invading feel, it’s an aromachemical and really overused imo (because I hate it ). The base note of those Arabian shopping mall scents fairly often, and the other lingering note in those is oud. Jasmine in its strongest forms can have a fecal scent, it’s literally the same compound, so it needs a light touch and then it’s a beautiful white floral. Magnolia to me has a sweetish soapy floral scent. M&S had magnolia soap and talc etc for years. Frangipane is also a tropical white flower, it can be overpowering.
Hope this helps a little. Fragrantica has a facility to look at notes and which perfumes have them so you can train your nose a little using that and seeking out the scents for reference.

If you like using AI, would you try asking "what do scent a, b, c and d all have in common that makes me not like them?" to give you a list of possible common notes or combinations that don't do it for you?
I've used it the other way round (what perfumes should I try if my favourites are x, y and z?) with good success!

I've used it the other way round (what perfumes should I try if my favourites are x, y and z?) with good success!

i have done this as well (although i went in full throttle).
I gave Chatgpt a list of all the perfumes i own and then a list of perfumes that I have sampled and didn't get on with ( or was a bit meh about) - when i am interested in sampling new perfumes from a brand i post screenshots to Chatgpt and ask it what it thinks . It pumps out an opinion on hard yes, hard no and worth a try .
