My boyfriend and I had this exact convo earlier in the week, think it depends where you’re from. He’s from the country and to him knacker is a traveller where as I’m from Dublin and to me a knacker is a scumbag/scobe.

Well where I’m from knacker is used as a derogatory term for a traveller, it wouldn’t be used in any other context so it wasn’t rude, it was the opposite, because I’m constantly trying to stop people using the term.

I would have known it originally as a derogatory term for members of the like. It then became a term used to describe 'scumbags', which kind of made it twice as insulting for travellers as it kind of implies that they are synonymous with scumbags.
Its similar to the word ****** (the R word is censored). Originally used legitimately in the medical field to describe mentally disabled people. Then became an insulting word to describe same. Then became a word to insult people, which made it doubly insulting/hurtful for those who the term was originally applied to.
Imo its just best to not use it as it can be taken up in a number of different ways depending on who you're talking to.
It actually comes from the term knacker yard where old mining horses went when they didn't work anymore. It's someone who doesn't work hard for their money.
Yeah I'm aware of the origin of the word but I'm speaking of the common use of the word and who it is applied to. Thats why I explained about the R word. Its origin is perfectly legitimate in the medical field. Not so much now in common usage (So much so it is censored on this site.)
I've never heard it be used to describe travellers before. Only people who don't work.

This is what annoys me, on the one face she’s telling us oh poor us we had to take a mortgage break, on the other face she’s advertising an app that helps you save money , and then on the other face she’s advertising a €400 bag, €35 oven mitt and a bleeping candle for €50! Which is it grace , pick a side and stick to it!!! Rant over !
